'The 'United Devonshire' - New Chum Line of Reef'. Situated in the Devonshire Valley immediately south of Victoria St, Eaglehawk. Was the leading mine in the field in the years 1883-4 and 1885 during which time it produced 65,898 oz of gold and paid $(?)399,800 in dividends. This mine was then situated on what in January, 1902, became the West Shaft. The Company was then amalgamated with the 'Princess Alexandra' (approx 100 yds further east) which then became the Main Shaft of the 'United Devonshire'. On face of photo in indian ink: area of 24 acres, has 6 shafts, equals 4000 feet of sinking. No less than 13 levels and 16 x cuts making a total of 12000 feet. Amount spent in labour 228,000 ( pounds stg. ) Quartz raised 144,5000 tons and yields to date 188,000 ozs of gold. Dividends 585,000 ( pounts st.) nearly 20/-/ a share. Employment to nearly 200 men. Handwritten report from T. Banner, Mine Manager to Williams United, dated August 8, 1904, at request of Directors. Report is for the machinery at the York Shaft. When the underground men leave the shaft after their shift, they will walk about 10 feet into a tunnel and then come up through the floor of the changing house by way of a broad staircase. Document - MINING ACCIDENTS - SENSATIONAL WINDING ACCIDENT AT THE HUSTLER'S RESERVE NO 2 CO
Handwritten extract from the Bendigo Advertiser 5/12/1893 where three miners had a narrow escape in a winding accident at the Huster's Reserve No 2 Company's Mine, in Pall Mall. At the change of shift, three miners, William Merrin, Frederick Willoughby and E. Johns got into the cage on the western compartment to be lowered to the 845 ft. plat. The Driver Russel lost control of the engine and hauled the empty cage in the eastern compartment to the poppet heads. Cage went up with a crash, but the safety hooks caught it and let the rope go. The men in the cage in western compartment were very alarmed has cage hit the bearers on the 845 feet plat with considerable force. If it had crashed through the bearers they would have landed in the water below. The shaft was 1070 feet deep. The Mine Manager, S. T.
