August was a monumental mason, potter and sculptor, and was employed at Corbens Ltd Clifton Hill, to carve war memorials in Victoria post WW1 c 1915-1922. 1922 August Rietmann was commissioned to sculpt a bust of Sir MacPherson Robertson 1859-1945, confectionery maker, ( famous for Freddo Frogs and Cherry Ripe chocolate bar). The Bust was installed at Mac Robertson Girls High School for which he had donated funds for the building. 'MacRob' also funded the bridge over the Yarra River and the herbarium in the Botanical Gardens that all bear his name. In Retrospect In mid 1952, a distinguished man arrived in Bendigo and interested several citizens, including Dr. P Goodman, the President of the Musical Advancement Society, in the formation of a Company for the production of Musical Comedy. The meeting was called at the home of Mr Fred Bush, and a group of enthusiasts made the acquaintance of Mr Norman Lee, our producer and sequently the M.A.S. and several leading citizens, sponsored the first production, by subscribing funds for initial expenses. From such humble beginning, our present Society originated. Mr Cyril Cyril Warne was appointed Musical Director, Mrs Phyllis House, Pianist, and Miss Madge Welch, Ballet Mistress. During the Season of ''Chu Chin Chow,'' the Society will stage its 100th performance - indeed an outstanding feat in such a brief history. Newspaper articles (2) 'Colac Herald' 3rd and 6th October 1969, describing a dedication of carpet and communion cushions by Nan Saunders in honour of her deceased husband, George Cook Saunders. Article (a): 'Carpet, Cushions to be dedicated' 'Mr Saunders, a descendant of explorer Captain James Cook, was a prominent Colac citizen until his death 18 months ago' The dedication to be performed at the Colac Wesley Church. Article (b) 'His Life was a life worth living', minister's tribute to late Mr. G.C. Saunders. George Saunders lived in 'Tintin Glen', Panton Street Golden Square, before he relocated to Colac. The foundation stone for the new church was laid by the then Prime Minister, Mr R G Menzies, in 1953. The tender of 13,300 pounds submitted by Mr R S Grills was accepted in 1952. Work was completed in November 1958. The cost of the carpets was met by the Ladies' Guild and the windows in the children's chapel were given in memory of the Rev T W Leggatt by members of his family. Part of the Zakrzewski Collection of spinning wheels donated to the National Wool Museum by Mr Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski. For many years, Mr Zakrzewski collected, researched and repaired spinning wheels from all over the world. This spinning wheel is Australian and is made from Queensland Kauri pine. It dates from c.WWI and was designed by someone inexperienced in spinning wheel design, but who was able to solve the problems encountered in an innovative way. For instance the flyer and bobbin mechanism were made from the sort of bits and pieces that would have been found laying around a workshop. Part of the Zakrzewski Collection of spinning wheels donated to the National Wool Museum by Mr Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski. For many years, Mr Zakrzewski collected, researched and repaired spinning wheels from all over the world. This wheel is from Yugoslavia and dates from the early 20th century. It is made from Poplar Alba. The treadle bar runs obliquely from beneath the right arm of the T-shaped base to beneath the stem of the T. The mounting of the wheel and the flyer mechanism are reversed. This is in order that flax may be spun with one hand or that plying may be done.
