A4 size report, aqua cover and various pagings, written in 1985. The primary aim of this project was to report to the TAFE Board, Victoria on the implementation of life skills material into mainstream vocational education at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), with parallel emphasis on implementation models for statewide courses. The report is divided into 3 parts. Part A attempts to define the notion of life skills that developed from the work of Dr Stewart Sharlow’s ‘TAFE and basic life skills’, TAFE Services, Victoria, 1982 and the ‘Audit of TAFE middle level and technician humanities subjects,TAFE Services, Victoria, 1982. As a result of these publications a conference ‘Life Skills and the TAFE Practitioner’ was held in October, 1983 at Preston College of TAFE in Victoria with the aim of seeking a definition of the term life skill with regard to curriculum developments and classroom teaching. This report draws on these events and a number of programs developed or piloted in Victoria that are relevant to the issue. The report focuses on: 1. Work and Engineering Programme (RMIT,1984); 2. Diploma of Architectural Technology (RMIT); 3. Certificate of Law Enforcement Studies (RMIT); 4. Office and Secretarial Studies Certificate; 5. Life Skills at the Gordon College of TAFE; 6. Life Skills in the V.O.P. at Box Hill College of TAFE. Part B focuses on the experience of these activities towards curriculum and implementation needs, and evaluation and staff development requirements particular to these programs. Harrietville Historical Societyingot mould
this ingot mould was used by the harrietville tronoh co. who operated the "tronoh" gold dredge from 1939 - 1954. this was the largest dredge in the southern hemisphere.when this dredge ceased operations it marked the end of dredging in the ovens valley.this dredge also brought electricity to harrietville.This item is significant asit is the only one in existence .This has been confirmed by former staff members. This mould represents an era which was very important to the story of HARRIETVILLE. The "tronoh" dredge commenced operations at a time when mining was at a low point . It provided employment for up to 60 men at it's peak & also connected harrietville to the electricity grid. When the tronoh dredge ceased operations it marked the end of gold dredging in the ovens valley. Victorian Railways Institute - The VRI was formed in 1909, and started operations at the 3rd Floor, Flinders Street Station, on 31 January, 1910. The Commissioners of the day saw a need for a Social Organisation, where Railway Staff could come together and discuss common issues, and relax in a friendly environment. The VRI was also, for many decades, the Primary Educator of all Rail Staff in their Duties and Tickets, from Train Crews, Station staff and the like, through to the Accounting Office team, everyone was trained at the VRI on how to do their jobs in the VRI. At the height of its power, the VRI would lead a member base of 30,000+ Families, all who would have a dedication to the Rail Industry and VRI. 1889 BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES ENJOYED HIGH STATUS IN AUSTRALIA AND OVERSEAS. SEVERAL SMB STUDENTS WERE RESIDENTS OF CLUNES. SCHOOLS OF MINES HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED AT SEVERAL OTHER DISTRICT CENTRES INCLUDING MARYBOROUGH AND CRESWICK, OTHERS WERE TO FOLLOW AT ARARAT, STAWELL AND DAYLESFORD 1890 CLUNES BOROUGH COUNCIL WITH MR JOSEPH BRYANT LEADING, APPROACHED THE BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES REQUESTING SUPPORT FOR A BRANCH SCHOOL AT CLUNES OFFERING ELEMENTARY CLASSES WITH SMB STAFF AS LECTURERS SMB COUNCIL AGREED TO STAFF THE SUGGESTED CLASSES. SEVERAL PUBLIC LECTURES WERE ARRANGED AT CLUNES TO HELP CREATE INTEREST IN THE NEW CLUNES BRANCH OF SMB. CLASSES SOMMENCED SOME AT THE CLUNES FREE LIBRARY AND SOME AT THE NEW NORTH CLUNES MINE OFFICE/LABORATORY PER FAVOUR OF JOSEPH BRYANT WHO WAS HONORARY DIRECTOR OF THE BRANCH SCHOOL. 1891 LOWER STUDENT NUMBERS CAUSING CONCERN.. Logs were sold to sawmillers from State forest from 1 July 1974 in cubic metres (true volume). Previously sawlogs had been sold on the basis of Hoppus volume. This simple device with two rotating wheels enabled staff in FCV offices to rapidly calculate log volumes from measurements taken in the bush of log girth and length and recorded on paper log dockets. From the early 1980s automated systems became available with the advent of cheap electronic office calculators and simple computers. An early manual device that was superseded by electronic calculatorsOffice Device Twin rollers used to quickly and simply calculate true log volumes using measurements of girth and length. An allowance could also be made for pipe defects. The top roller was for larger diameter logs.forest measurement -

Fire schools were an important pre-summer program for all Forests Commission staff and crews They were designed as refresher courses for existing staff and training of new staff on how to use pumps and hoses FCV Forest Divisions were made up of separate forest inter-district and competitions were held.
