John Lachlan McIntyre was born at Beeac, Victoria in December 1890. He enlisted in the 1st AIF in July 1915. John fought on the Western Front, taking part in the battles of Fromelles and the 2nd Battle of the Somme. He was severely wounded at Fromelles and spent 12 months in hospital in England before returning to the front. John returned home in 1919 and was granted a soldier settlement block in Lara in 1937. He was a founding member of Lara RSL and is its longest serving member. John died in 1990. This letter was written by John and sent to his mother in 1918 on his journey through Belgium. The McIntyre family were early pioneers in the Lara district, and the brothers were founding members of the Lara RSL. This letter represents a significant link to the history of the town and sub-branch.A brown envelope addressed to Miss J McIntyre. Within the envelope is a pack of 12 illustrated souvenir post cards. Coloured postcard of an ESCo tram westbound at the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard St. Ballarat, c1906 - 7 - has a destination box. There are several pedestrians in the picture. Taken from the east side of the intersection, looking towards the Town Hall, with the National Mutual Insurance building and Snows in the photo. Also shows the overhead arrangements - two wire for Sturt St, single for Lydiard St, coming into the intersection. On the rear of the postcard are the initials "JE" in the top centre, a 1d Victorian stamp, cancelled 5/4/1909, addressed to a Mrs Sproston of Skeleton Cottage Avoca with a message from her granddaughters - Fervie and Edith. Sometimes called a sweetheart postcard, it was a way of sending thoughts to the troops overseas. The printing on the rear implies it was sent with a hamper to the troops overseas. The text and poem on the front says : 'Like the boomerang may you quickly come back. / To wish you a Speedy, Safe and Sure Return. This hamper is sent you with greetings sincere, And the hope that its contents will bring you "good cheer"; While you're doing your bit, we are thinking of you And we'll welcome you home when you've seen the job through, In the meantime just send us a message to say You've received this all right if you find it OK.' Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920.A record of correspondence with the troops in World War 1 and sending good wishes with a hamper. A postcard with a black and white image of small boats being towed on a rope through water. Each boat is carrying several soldiers, and other ships and boats can be seen in the background. From the title it is a landing party going ashore near Gaba Tepe, on the Gallipoli peninsula. The back of the post card is blank so it was kept more as a souvenir than sent as a letter. There are other similar postcards in the collection.Images of Gallipoli were captured on postcards as mementoes. Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War.
