HMAS Stuart (D00), an Admiralty type destroyer leader, launched in 1918 for the Royal Navy. She was transferred to the RAN in 1933, and served during World War II. The ship was paid off in 1946, and sold for scrap. HMAS Stuart (DE 48), one of six River class destroyer escorts (based on the British Type 12 frigate) built for the RAN. Built in Britain for the Australian Government the HMAS Otway arrived in Sydney in 1929. Owing to shortage of funds the submarine was transferred to the Royal Navy in 1931. Made by a German Prisoner of War in Camp 13 (Murchison) and given to a member of the garrison, R. E. O'Hara. Internees / POW's made many items from largely scrap material during their time in the camps. This item holds historical and cultural significance as an example of the ingenuity of internees & how many occupied their time in camps, shaping the cultural and creative life of those in the camps. Also a possible indicator of relationship between garrison and internees. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. A black and white photograph of a Gunner at 1st Australian Task Force Base, Nui Dat, Phuoc Tuy Province, sorting 105mm shell casings returned from a Fire Support Base. The casings were then re-packed into their relevant types and returned to Australia, as scrap metal. Report or list titled "Particulars of single truck cars & Suggested order in which they should be scrapped" Dated 26/4/1927. Seems that the 3rd and 4th sheets were initial drafts while the 1st and 2nd the later version, though still with some corrections. Lists car (tramcar) numbers, No. of cars, seating capacity, wheel base, horse power, type of car body - lists class, type of truck and type of equipment. The 3rd and 4th sheets also gave the weight in tons. List the cars that had already been scrapped. The van was last registered in 1948, and forgotten when the factory began building Sabre jets. The van spent a number of years in Sir Lawrence's garage. It was rescued from local scrap metal dealers by Rosebus car dealer Barry Patterson.Newspaper article about Deliverette van which had a collapsible drivers seat instead of standing room only driving.
