At a press conference in Melbourne, the Australian Council of Church, Australian Catholic Relief, the Baptist World Aid and Relief Committee, the Lutheran World Service and the Seventh Day Adventists joined to speak about a combined appeal to relieve drought victims in Africa. One speaker was Anglican priest the Rev. James Murray, who had recently returned from some of the drought-stricken areas with a film-maker, having been sent on behalf of the appeal. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Black and white photograph of a group of four men and one woman standing in front of a brick wall of a house. This item was donated to the Moorabbin Historical Society in the 1980's by Mr John Herron of Bentleigh. It was brought back from the Boer War by Private W.F. Daff of South Brighton [Later Moorabbin] Private Daff served in the Second Contingent sent to the Boer War 1899 - 1902 South Africa.This item is of Historical Significance because it is linked to the Boer War [1899- 1902] and is of native South African origin.Mr John Herron is a descendant of James Jones an early settler in Moorabbin Shire and the Daff family were early settlers in South Brighton ( Moorabbin).A large natual wood pipe in three pieces with carved bone mouth piece.The bottom piece is on an angle so it stands upright. Sergeant Payne was selected as one of three representatives from the 8th Light Horse to a review of the King's Banners presented to Australian regiments following the South African campaign. The review was held 14 November 1904. The Banner is now on display in the History Room of the 8/13th Victorian Mounted rifles, Simpson Barracks , Melbourne.Strong connections to other objects in the 8/13 VMR collection.Black and white photograph of soldier wearing helmet and holding mace. The original South Wangaratta Primary School served the district for over 110 years and closed in December 1985 before moving to new premises. When the school closed in 1989 and with the demise of the South Wangaratta Hall due to flooding in the 1990's the Honour Board was wrapped in a blanket and stored in a shed for the best part of 10 years before being donated to the Wangaratta RSL for safekeeping and permanent display. In 2023 103 Lyons Street South was sold and left uncared for after being sold in 2022. Later in 2023 it was demolished. The red brick building was built by 103 Lyons Street South, Ballarat, Ballarat Central. 103 Lyons street is a red brick house which was built c1980.
