pin cushion, first half 20th century
Pincushions or pin pillows date back to the Middle Ages in Europe. The tomato shaped pincushion grew from a Victorian Era superstition that tomatoes were good luck and so they were often given to newly weds as charms and placed on the mantle. When there were no actual tomatoes a fabric token was made and later used for pins. Some pincushions were stuffed with abrasive materials designed to sharpen the pins. This one would have a needlework accessory for an Orbost local. This item is a common sewing accessory reflecting the needlework skills of women in the first half of the 20th century.A soft padded fabric pin cushion. Material is a black background decorated with colourful flowers. It is divided into eight sections by red stitched lines and holds 3 needles and a bent pin. -

Box, HMAS Voyager, c1957
A gift to Ron Cochrane, a member of the Navy commissioning team of HMAS Voyager. The box was handmade by two brothers CLARK/E (?) from Benalla. The signatures done in ball point pen belonged to the crew attached to the portside Forward Mess. They presented the box to Cochrane who was responsible for the Mess as a token of appreciation. Ron Cochrane R46195 served as a Leading Hand with the Royal Australian Navy between 1951 and 1957 and served on numerous ships including HMAS Voyager between 6/2 - 6/10/1957. He was born on 20/3/1933 at Ballarat East. Daring class destroyer, Voyager, was the first ship of her class to enter Australian service, and the first all-welded ship to be built in Australia. During the night of 10 February 1964, Voyager and the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne collided off Jervis Bay, when the destroyer passed in front of the carrier during post-refit sea trials. Voyager was cut in two by the collision, sinking with the loss of 82 of the 314 people aboard. This was the largest loss of Australian military personnel in peacetime, and the subsequent investigations resulted in the holding of two Royal Commissions—the only time in Australian history this has occurred.Cream painted wooden box with metal hinges. There is an inscription and ship on the lid and autographs written in ink on the underside of the lid. On top of lid - HMAS Voyager 1957 On bottom: Bills, bills and more bills !!!!!! Document, Business Leadership: first Luncheon Address delivered to Legacy Club (H45), 1923
An address delivered by P.W. Powell (the first Secretary of the Club) in October 1923 to the newly formed Legacy Club. In it he notes that "The most important thing in the development of this Club is to formulate a sound constructive policy that will draw in the best type of member and make the Club a live force in the advancement of this country." The comradeship and cooperation developed by the troops during wartime should be applied in civilian life to the development of Australia. He finishes by calling for the Club to be named the Legacy Club "in token of the heritage that has been bequeathed to us by those who so nobly commended the work that is left to us to carry on."An insight into corporate and political thinking of the 1920s as the country transitioned from wartime to peacetime, and an insight into the thinking of one of the founder members of Melbourne Legacy.4 sheets of white copy paper, black typing.'H45' (see Item 00937)in blue ink on first pagehistory, founding legatee -

The buildings architect was Filippo Brunelleschi. The Ospedale degli Innocenti was a charity institution that was responsible for the welfare of abandoned children. It represented social and humanistic views of Florence during the early Renaissance. Above each column is a ceramic tondo. These were originally meant by Brunelleschi to be blank concavities, but around 1490 Andrea della Robbia was commissioned to fill them in.[7] The design features a baby in swaddling clothes. A few of the tondi are still the original ones, but some are nineteenth century copies. Award, Stokes, Peter Alexander's Junior Techncial School Athletics Medallion, 1958
Stokes was established in 1856 by a young English die-sinker named Thomas Stokes, who had arrived from England duringthe gold rush of that era. Disappointment in the fields led him to Melbourne where he setup business as a diesinker producing medals, tokens, buttons and silverware, a skill he acquired over five dedicated years of apprenticeship which he had completed in Birmingham, England. A merger with G.F Martin in 1867 saw the firm introduce electroplated nickel silver to Australia. The banking crisis of the 1890’s saw a split with Martin and the gradual joining of Thomas Stokes’ three sons, and by 1911 the company was called Thomas Stokes and Sons.
