"The uncertainty was magnified by a range of post-war concerns and expectations that the expansionary 1949 budget brought into sharp focus. The nation was still war-weary, tired of austerity and impatient with rationing and controls; people wanted to spend their accumulated savings on the new household goods starting to appear in stores, and the taxation burden was resented. Further, rising inflation was a problem, with the Consumer Price Index rising by more than 10 per cent in 1949. Photos show W class 304 after delivery from Adelaide being unloaded by the travelling yard crane. The tram was built in Adelaide by the Holden Bodyworks and completed at the Workshops. The tram entered service on 14-8-1924. It was converted to a W2 class tram in Dec. 1932. The second photo shows the tram being loaded onto a horse-drawn jinker. The photograph shows Scrubber tram No. 10 in Swanston St with the Foys department store in the background. The tram was later renumbered to 10W. Has W2 class tram No. 500 behind. This tram began its life in Sydney in 1908, converted in 1952 to a scrubber, and sold to MMTB in 1959. The tram is now at the Bylands TMSV site.
