The wool stockpile accumulated when the price of wool fell - growers were protected by a reserve price scheme (first established in 1974) which meant that the former Australian Wool Corporation purchased wool that did not meet the reserve price. The wool was kept until the prices rose. Unfortunately the stockpiled wool accumulated until the reserve price scheme collapsed in 1991. At its peak the wool stock pile reached 4.7 million bales. This particular bale is one of the last from the stockpile which has gradually diminished since 1991. This bale was part of a nine-bale lot from the clip of Richard Froomes (Seaspray, Gippsland) and was purchased by the Australian Wool Corporation from Brian Rodwell and Co. Pty Ltd's (stock and station agents) November 1989 catalogue. It is marked as bale no. 2 and carries Richard Froomes' 'Kullingral' brand, and is classed at AAAFM (best wool) and is 21.1 microns (see AWTA certificate in supp. file). The 'Kullingral' branded bales were from a 3500 head fine wool flock, based on Merryville and The Fringe bloodlines. Mrs Sairey Gamp - English Monasteries declined in 1405 the Chruch was said to have one third of English's wealth. Henry VIII dissolved the Monasteries despite their record of charitable and medical work and took over most of their property. This left large numbers of helpless sick and poor to die. For the next 300 years there was no nursing class "hospitals" were overcrowded (sometimes 6 people to a bed) and were dirty. Nursing was carried out by women of low character and morals. Pall Mall Gazette, 6 April 1866 One day early in December between the hours of 5.44 and 6.15 A.M., four first-class ships, the Roxburgh Castle, the Sarah Grice, the Kosciusko, and the Omar Pasha, laden with wool and gold, left Port Phillip on a race for England. There was heavy betting on the result, the Omar Pasha being favourite. These vessels have now reached their destination, and it is interesting to note the respective length of their passages. The Omar Pasha arrived in the Downs on the 14th of February, seventy-two days; the Kosciusko on the 23rd, eighty-one days; the Roxburgh Castle on the 7th of March, one hundred and eleven days. The first and second vessels are Aberdeen built vessels, and belong to Messrs. The TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO military pip relates to The Most Honourable Order of the Bath. Originally founded as a military order of chivalry, the star (or pip) is worn as army officers' rank insignia. The insignia is that of the Order of the Bath. The Order's motto is Tria juncta in uno (Latin for "Three joined in one"). This is a reference to either the union of England, Scotland and Ireland, or to the Holy Trinity.Green military coat with buttons, collar and two outer pockets. This book was a prize given by the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School to Richard Petterd in 1888. The Warrnambool Baptist Church was established in 1864 in a small cottage in Kinross Avenue in Warrnambool at the home of Mr and Mrs Andrew Griffiths. In 1869 a church was built in Koroit Street and enlarged in 1974. From time to time more improvements were made and the church still operates from the same site today. A Sunday School was established in 1865. Richard Forrester Petterd, born in 1878 in Warrnambool, was the son of George Petterd and Mary Ann Petterd, nee Warn. He married Susanna McConnell in 1903 and died in 1935. A daughter, Muriel, married Frederick Wooles in 1933 and it was their son, Kenneth from whose estate this book has come to be added to the Society’s collection.This book is most significant as it is a rare memento from the early days of the Warrnambool Baptist Sunday School and it belonged to Richard Petterd whose family was involved in businesses in Warrnambool as picture framers, stationery and fancy goods shop proprietors and estate commission agents. The book is a very attractive example of Victorian-era children’s books. This is a hard cover book of 80 pages It has a multi-coloured front cover depicting three children reading a book with a window behind them and floral decorations and two birds surrounding the three girls. The red binding is somewhat torn. The back cover has black and white etchings of flowers and children and advertisements for other books available.
