Postcard - Postcard, Colour, E. Soffa, Half Moon Bay, c. 1920
Postcards began to be produced in Victoria from 1876. Between 1900 and 1920, picture postcards in Australia became an incredibly popular phenomenon. People could cheaply and easily send messages, without the formality of a letter, and they provided a cheap form of souvenir. Eventually, every event of significance was commemorated in some way with a postcard, and this led to the development of a ‘picture on one side and a message/stamp on the other’ postcard we are familiar with today. They were also a popular form of advertising. This postcard appears to be one in a set of postcards promoting the Black Rock area.Colour postcard from a hand tinted photographic image depicting the foreshore at Half Moon Bay, Black Rock. There are people in the foreground wading in the sea, a man sitting in a small boat near the shore, several other boats around, people deeper in the water in the background, and a range of beach shacks/bathing boxes in the far background.beach, holiday, leisure, boating, bathing boxes, recreation, foreshore, seaside -

Hector Valentine James Hanson Esq., a sort of "knock-about" bloke of over eighty, has lived and worked in quite a few areas of eastern Australia, and like all of us, has a story to tell. Generally. I believe that the stories of "ordinary folk" are all too often left unwritten. This book is just part of the history of each place that Hec lived, worked and relaxed, particularly the hilly country of Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Hec knew the country like the back of his hand and in many instances could have told various landholders things about their properties that even they did not know. H.V.J.Hanson is "living history" and the tales related in this book are both interesting and entertaining. Foreword by Terence J. Book, Jane Sandilands, Roy Everard Ross, 6.7.1899-1.11.1970 : engineer, investor, quarryman, philanthropist, 2003
For 25 years of his working life he worked as a Shire Engineer in West Gippsland and developed a reputation for competence and efficiency. Passionate about both trees and golf, he was a careful and measured man with an entrepreneurial spirit who worked behind the scenes He was seen by many as aloof and a hard man and by the very few who became close to him, as warm and fun loving and fond of children. Ross formed a business association with Wally Lawson in Warragul and together they embarked on a number of projects to advance the town and the district. As a young man, Ross had studied geology and working with quarries was familiar to him in his role as a Shire Engineer. In 1959 he established Bayview Quarries in partnership with Wally Lawson. When, in 1968, Bayview Quarries was taken over by Boral Ltd., Ross approached Tom Maw who had an operational quarry at Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula. Ross and Maw became partners in what became Hillview Quarries. Ross also became the largest individual shareholder in Western Mining. Those shares formed the major part of the legacy he left to establish The R. E. Ross Trust and The Trust now operates on its income from assets acquired following the disposal of the Western Mining shares and from the earnings of Hilhnew Quarries. It is the only trust in Australia which owns a quarry as one of its investments.non-fictionFor 25 years of his working life he worked as a Shire Engineer in West Gippsland and developed a reputation for competence and efficiency.
