... Acland Street St Kilda schools John Hadfield James A Ure Christ ...This school was one of the earliest in St Kilda. The 1842 plan of Crown Lands that were sold to establish what became the village of St Kilda reserved an area on Acland Street for the 'Church of England and School'. Christ Church was constructed on the site in 1854-57. A school had started before then but was closed for about a year after the Head Teacher abandoned his students in search of gold. A sign on the door read 'This school is closed in consequence of the master having gone to the diggings'. The school was re-opened in 1853, with only two pupils on the first day. The new Headmaster was John Hadfield, a teacher who had recently arrived in Melbourne from Wiltshire, England. He stayed on as Headmaster for the next 22 years. Free secular compulsory education was introduced in Victoria from 1873. Until a permanent State school could be built in the area, the Government used the St Kilda Town Hall for this purpose, and the students from Christ Church school were transferred there. The Brighton Road State School was opened in January 1875, with John Hadfield was its first Headmaster. The Government then leased the old Christ Church schoolroom and established a second school there. The Headmaster was James A Ure. The school continued until the 1940s. Puffing Billy Railway
Sign - Advertising - Griffiths Tea Sign - 30 Miles, between 1879 - 1930's
In 1879, James Griffiths established one of Australia’s first tea and coffee distribution companies at 30 Flinders St, Melbourne, which is now, occupied by the boutique Lindrum Hotel. Established with his brother John, recent immigrants from England, Griffiths occupied the highest position in the commercial world during their many years as distributors of tea, coffee, cocoa and other products throughout Victoria and Australia. The Griffiths brand was a guarantee for quality of product and service as it still is today. This extensive service was provided to customers via horse drawn carts serviced by rail from Melbourne. As a spirited entrepreneur, Griffiths made his company a household name through his pioneering use of outdoor advertising by installing the infamous blue and white enamel “Griffiths Tea” promotional signs affixed to the railway boundary fences highlighting to travellers the distance to or from Melbourne, indicating so many “— miles to Griffiths Tea”. These signs, much sought after today, were well known through out the eastern states. Photographs have been published of a sign erected by a Digger in France during the First World War with the words “1100 miles to Griffiths Bros”. Tragically, James and his wife Emily with friends died in a level rail crossing accident at Bayswater in 1925. Despite this unfortunate accident, Griffiths and its culture of innovation has survived as one of the few 100% Australian owned coffee roasters, with only three owners in 128 years. http://www.griffithscoffee.com.au/about-us/back-to-1879/ Sign - Advertising - Griffiths Tea Sign - 30 MilesHistoric - Sign - Advertising - Griffiths Tea Sign - used along side of Victorian Railway lines and at StationsSign - Advertising - Griffiths Tea Sign - 30 Miles Griffiths Tea sign made of Enamel paint on metal sign30 Miles to Griffiths Tea Sign puffing billy, sign - advertising - griffiths tea sign - 30 miles -

Sculpture - Public Artwork, Hebe by Charles F. Summers, 1899
This statue of Hebe standing tall in Sturt Street is a religious reference to the youth. She holds aloft the cup of youth while the flask or jug of knowledge hangs in her fallen arm. Both Hebe and Ruth as iconic figures face each other across their garden beds forming a part of the sculptural vista of Sturt St. Hebe, Greek Goddess of Youth and the biblical figure Ruth, were the gift of wealthy local benefactor John Permewan, who owned carrier firm Permewan & Wright. He commissioned Charles Summers to sculpt both of the women figures. The memorial stone of the UMFC in Church St. Richmond was laid in December 1868. The bluestone church, which seated 308 people, was designed by G.R. Cox and built by John Wright. It was opened in May 1869. By 1890 subsidence in the foundations of the building had caused the bluestone façade to bulge dangerously outwards and a new façade of red and white brick was constructed. The memorial stone of the new façade was laid on 7th June 1890. Before construction of the 1868 church, services were held in a weatherboard building which subsequently served as the Sunday School.B & W photograph of the exterior of the Richmond United Free Methodist Church.united free methodist church, church street richmond, bluestone, g.r. cox, john wright. -
