Canoeing on the River Yarra at Melbourne was an important and widespread recreational pursuit for Melbournians, especially in the first half of the twentieth century. The Victorian Canoe Club was formed in 1912 at a meeting in Melbourne and its first committee elected in the same year. Records indicate that the Club continued into at least the 1950s .The album has historic and social significance as a record of recreational activities (as well as canoe making) in the early years of the twentieth century. It has local significance as the site of the headquarters of the Club was in Studley park. A number of photographs in the album provide vistas of Kew on the Yarra that are otherwise unavailable.One of 24 labelled photos in part album, originating from the Victorian Canoe Club, which had its headquarters in Studley Park, Kew. The album includes a photographic record of canoe construction and also locations in Studley Park and Kew where the canoes were used. As a member of the Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society, donor Arthur ROWAN photographed a series of significant buildings in the Port and South Melbourne area over several years. A selection of nineteen of these was presented to the Port Melbourne Society in 1993. However visitors were asked to avoid using the road above Mt. Beauty between 7-8.30 a.m. and 4-5.30 p.m. Many clubs have been building at Falls Creek and there are many things to see, including the Kiewa hydroelectric scheme. John S. Irvine was a resident of Peterborough and one of the original trustees of the present golf club. He died in 1999. Rod Calvert's house (on the corner of Blair & Schomberg) was used as the clubhouse, prior to the purchase of the current clubhouse.This photograph is significant for two reasons: it depicts the second hole plus some of the off shore rocks as they were in 1999. Mainly this is significant as John Irvine, along with N. R. Calvert, & P. G. Clark, guaranteed a loan in 1972 for the purchase of the land and building which are now the golf clubhouse. Until the Hall was built, this clubhouse was the meeting point for the community, and continues to be for many events. 1986 Grand Parade, 8 November. The Society's entry in the Eltham Community Festival parade included Ben Hall's Cobb and Co. coach and was awarded the major prize for the parade. This involves a perpetual trophy which the Society holds for one year. This gold locket was presented to Thomas Edward Bostock on his retirement as Secretary of the Warrnambool Cricket Club on 1st August 1884. Thomas Bostock was a member of the Bostock family who had come from Tasmania to the Warrnambool district in the late 1840s. The Bostock brothers were prominent in the history of the area as pastoralists, shopkeepers, flour millers and Bond Store operators. They were all enthusiastic local cricketers. Thomas worked for the Bank of Australasia in the 1880s and was a keen footballer and cricketer. He moved to Geelong where he made his mark as a Councillor, Mayor and businessman, with several buildings and a street named after him. This item is of very high significance because:- 1. It is an attractive and valuable gold locket from Victorian times 2. It has strong local significance as it was presented in 1884 to a prominent Warrnambool man, Thomas Edward Bostock 3. It has considerable social significance, demonstrating the customs of the time of a man carrying a locket containing miniatures of personal interest to the bearer and of the presentation of such an object by a sporting club. This is a gold locket with a monogram of T.E. Bostock on the front and an inscription on the back. The locket has a small ring at the top so that it could be attached to a watch chain. The locket opens to reveal two oval inserts (one with a blue background) suitable for small photographs or miniatures.Monogram - T.E.B. Inscription: ‘Presented to T.E.
