Councillor James Jellie came to Melbourne from Ireland in 1841 and moved to Belfast in 1843. he then relocated to Warrnambool in 1849 where he worked as a farmer. He later entered into business as an auctioneer, loan and estate agent and valuation and several large properties passed through his hands. He was one of the partners in the auctioneering firm that sold Atkinson’s Crown Special Survey. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme is the largest hydro-electric scheme in Victoria and the second largest in mainland Australia after the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The scheme is situated in the Australian Alps in north-eastern Victoria about 350 km from Melbourne and is wholly owned by AGL Energy. The scheme was originally constructed between 1938 and 1961 by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria although it was privatised in the 1990s. The scheme was originally developed solely for electricity generation, unlike the Snowy Mountains Scheme, which was also intended to direct water west of the Snowy Mountains for purposes of irrigation. From 1937 to 1944 the construction of dams at Pretty Valley, Rocky Valley and the Junction Dam were undertaken requiring large numbers of planning and support staff to see the projects successfully completed. Planning and support staff were the backbone of the successful completion of the Kiewa Valley Hydro Electric Scheme and contributed significantly to the development of the Kiewa Valley area. Original bell from the first Eltham Fire Station in Arthur Street erected on a tower in November 1928, the station opened in January 1929. In 1988 the bell was mounted beneath a wooden sign of Country Fire Authority, Eltham Fire Station, 909 Main Road, Eltham. As of September 2023 the bell is in the same location, with the signboard gone, suspended in a steel metal tower-like frame. The bell has seen service at the original Eltham Fire Station in Arthur Street (1928-1931), Henry Street beside the Rechabite Hall (1931-1935), Main Road (east side, site of present-day Coles 1935-1965) and 909 Main Road (1965-present). Series 34: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 - Prints & Documentation Series consists of 117 photographs of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. Items I - 41 are larger photographs mounted on card, which were exhibited. Items 42 - 117 are unmounted copies, alternative takes and other entries. Corresponding negatives contained in Series 35: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 – Negatives which consists of 267 colour and B&W negatives and one colour slide of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. The negatives are arranged by the entrant number of the photographer. The Eltham Community Photographic Survey collection is significant to the local community as it was curated by the local community - ordinary people of all ages - representing what they liked and did not like in the area where they lived. It represents an unfiltered representation of the Shire of Eltham as it was in 1988. It also represents one of many projects as part of the national programme of events and celebrations to commemorate the bicentenary. It is a time capsule of life in the 1980s of this urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north. Both dogs were impounded and the owners never claimed them. As a consequence they were eventually both put down. SHIRE OF ELTHAM COMMUNITY PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEY Photography is an artform which many of us practice, sometimes purely for artistic pursuit, sometimes to record the people and events in our lives. In 1988, as part of a local Bicentennial project, the Shire of Eltham conducted the Eltham Community Photographic Survey. Up to 100 entries were to be selected by a panel of photographers for entry into the Eltham Photographic Survey Exhibition. Entries had to be submitted by May 13, 1988. Entrants whose images were selected for the exhibition were contacted and requested to further submit an entry form providing entrant’s name, area of residence, age, and proposed captions. These details were then used to produce labels for the exhibition mounts. Where negatives had not been supplied, these were requested to support the display of printed enlargements mounted on 10” x 8” cardboard. The mounted prints were made available post exhibition for sale at $8.50 each for colour prints and $7.00 for B&W prints. Residents in the Shire were invited to collect a free roll of film and take a photograph of what they either liked or did not like about the area. A total of 160 entrants submitted multiple entries for the exhibition. Of those selected for exhibition, entrants ranged in age from 9 to 70 years. All custom colour and black and white printing for the exhibition was completed by Wattle Studios of Eltham. The Eltham Photographic Survey was jointly auspiced by the Shire of Eltham and Wattle Studios, of 953 Main Road, Eltham. Early settlers established market gardens, farms and business in the East Brighton ( East Bentleigh) area of Henry Dendy's Special Survey 1841 Brighton. The small communities established Churches and Schools. Stephen Charman, 1821-1906 a market gardener, donated land for the first Methodist Chapel, Cemetery and School in Charman Rd Cheltenham 1855. Alonzo Box, who lived in Oakleigh, was the nephew of William and Elizabeth Box, a pioneer settler of Dendy's Special Survey 1841 who purchased 'Box Cottage ' in 1865 and lived there until 1914. Alonzo Box married Mary Kloster/ Closter in 1918. On the Marriage Certificate Mary Box has spelt "Closter" with a "C" and not the "K" of her German heritage. This marriage was taking place during World War 1. Many immigrants would have altered their name at that time. The Box family were early pioneers of the district and raised their family in reconstructed 'Box Cottage'. James Jones was the son of Philip Jones, a Chairmaker, and Ann Jones who settled in East Brighton after the sale of land c1852 in the area of the Henry Dendy Special Survey of 1841. Mary Ann Moore was the daughter of Thomas Moore, a Gardener, and Sarah Harris who also settled in Brighton c1852. James and Mary Ann Jones settled and raised their family in East Brighton now Bentleigh. Mr John Herron resided at 4 Vickery St Bentleigh until 1989. James Jones and Mary Ann Moore were born in Brighton c1857 and c 1859 into pioneer market gardener families in the area of the Dendy Special Survey of 1841. Memo from Harold Lander, providing background information for a planning meeting to be held to discuss ‘Hunter’ television series. 'Hunter' is an Australian spy drama which ran from 4 July 1967 – 5 March 1969 on Nine Network. Lander writes about considerations for making the show commercially successful including publicity tactics. Robin Boyd is mentioned on page 9. Theodore Batterstedt and his father bought five acres of land on which they built a quartz crushing mill and a two storied, 8 roomed home in 1855. In 1869 they added 2 large rooms to each floor. In 1870 they sold the property to George Lansell. Further additions and renovations too place in 1888' 1890, 1900 and 1907. Thomas Pinniger (1828-1927) was born in England and emigrated to New Zealand before coming to Australia in 1852. With a team of 4 he conducted the first geodetic* survey of Victoria. He became the Government Surveyor for Bendigo in 1853 and in 1854 he laid out the plans for the town of Broadford. His son George, became the Victorian Surveyor General 1925-6. * Large scale mapping based on global measurements of large land masses.
