Junior Legatee performers in the Annual Demonstration, which was a major event for Legacy each year, usually held at the Melbourne Town Hall. This photo provides just one example of the beautiful costumes worn by Junior Legacy girls for Legacy's Annual Demonstrations at the Melbourne Town Hall. These costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. From 1928 until the 1980s, Melbourne Legacy ran an excellent exercise program for its widows. Classes were held weekly at Legacy House and there was often a waiting list for the water classes, which had both swimming instruction and water exercises. Some of the class members were in their 90s, many just learning to swim. The original postcards in this series (2013.002 to 2013.018) were generously loaned to Williamstown Botanic Gardens by a private collector for copying. The postcards are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day. This postcard, looking east on the main east-west axial path with a typical Victorian/Edwardian mown grass strip which in turn borders formal shrub beds with herbaceous plantings. The photo was taken after the Mexican Fan Palms (Washingtonia robusta) planted in 1915, which in turn were replaced with the same species in 1987. Blue and gold tobacco tin which originally contained "Capstan" ready-rubbed tobacco. Inside the tin are pieces of a stamp-making set. Some pieces depict animals, others are letters which can be combined on a plastic backing piece to form a custom-made stamp. The Bryant & May factory was located in Richmond, Melbourne and was a typical red-brick Victorian factory. It manufactured matches throughout the 20th century but had adopted the brand name - Redheads - by 1946.Bryant & May was a significant Quaker owned business which was founded in the mid 1800s in the UK. They spread to various countries including Australia where they produced the Crown Safety Matches during the early 1900s through to the 1940s when they took the brand name Red Heads. The factory in Richmond is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Rectangular carboard box. Wrapped in light brown paper. The top of the box has a coloured label fixed onto it. The label is mainly navy blue and red with white text. The label has the words ' Bryant & May's Safety Matches' printed on it. There is a picture of a crown in the centre in an oval. The box is unopened. There are several smaller boxes of matches inside.
