Cheatle sterilisation forceps used by Dr Lorna Lloyd-Green, Allen & Hanburys, England
These forceps are most commonly used for placing and removing instruments within a sterilization container. They were mainly used to remove smaller articles from gas and, later, steam sterilisers. Larger items, such as dressing trays, large bowls, and jugs, were removed with the larger Harrison's forceps. Cheatle forceps are also sometimes used as a type of dental forcep, to remove hot sterile instruments from the autoclave and place them into sterile pouches.Set of stainless steel forceps with screw joint. Barnes-type obstetrical forceps with Simpson style handles, c. 1849-1962, J. Grey & Son, Sheffield, U.K
Neville Barnes obstetric forceps have a cephalic and pelvic curve and are used for delivery of babies presenting as occipitoanterior. The left blade is put on first, followed by the right blade – the baby is then pulled down until the occiput is under the symphysis, then pulled around. This particular set of Barnes forceps is unusual because it has handles/grips associated with Simpson type obstetrical forceps, making it a combination of styles. These forceps are similar in appearance to a style of 19th century forceps known as Hensoldt's forceps, made by Jetter and Scheerer, c. 1899. These are pictured as Fig. 771 in the Sir Kenardatth Das catalogue (see references). J. Gray & Son, Sheffield, were in operation from 1849 to 1962, so these forceps date from this time period.Set of obstetric forceps. Consists of a set of stainless steel blades, with black bakelite hand grip attachment. Forceps are engraved with the text 'J.GREY & SON" and "SHEFFIELD". The number '4' is engraved on the inner aspect of the blade, at the join point.'J.GREY & SON/SHEFFIELD'obstetric delivery -

Heinrici Hot Air Motor, 1900s
Louis Heinrici, Germany, circa 1900 a small Stirling type hot air engine in which a body of air is worked constantly, being alternately heated and cooled during each revolution of the crankshaft. Heinrici hot air engines are of the valveless, closed cycle type, generally called Stirling cycle engines, after Robert Stirling, the Scottish Presbyterian minister who pioneered their development in the early 1800's. They operate by alternately heating and cooling a quantity of air, called the working fluid, contained in the engine's internal spaces. Heat is applied externally and passes through the cylinder wall, heating the working fluid, which is then expanded against a piston to do mechanical work. After heating and expanding, the working fluid is moved to a cool space where it cools and contracts before being returned to the hot space for the cycle to repeat. It has a displacer (just a loose piston), below and in the same cylinder as the power piston to which it is connected via cranks and linkages so as to lead by 90degrees of crankshaft angle. The displacer space and the piston space are connected by the annular gap around the loose fitting displacer so that the working fluid moves between these spaces and changes volume by the appropriate ratio as the engine rotates. Because they have no valves and experience no sudden pressure changes, Stirling engines are noted for quietness and reliability. Heinricis use air at atmospheric pressure for their working fluid, but for higher specific output (power for size) and better efficiency, modern Stirling cycle engines use pressurised gas- air, nitrogen, helium or hydrogen.Historic - Hot Air Engine - MotorHot Air Motor made of Steel with two drive wheels. a small Stirling type hot air engine in which a body of air is worked constantly, being alternately heated and cooled during each revolution of the crankshaft. Numurkah & District Historical Society
Carpentry Tools & Storage Box
These carpentry items were owned and used by Archibald (Mick) Blackley, a local long-time resident of Numurkah. Born 1912 in Numurkah, Mick was the son of Archibald (Senior) and Grace Blackley, also residents of Numurkah. Archie Senior was a carter, horse-breaker, conducted a livery stable and worked at Brown Corke & Co for a number of years. Archie also served in the Veterinary Corps in WW1. Some of the tools donated belonged to Archie Senior eg wooden hand planes. Mick Blackley used his dad’s tools (and also added some of his own) when he worked in various carpentry jobs during the 1930’s and 1940’s. One particular carpentry job was during the depression when Mick relocated to the Wonthaggi State Coal Mines building stables for the horses, and also completing some building works inside the mines. Returning to Numurkah, Mick joined a Mr Murray as carpenter and painter to build and repair houses. He then joined another builder for 4 years (We think this was Jim Tuttle). Mick then went on to work at the Butter Factory (originally called Holdenson & Nielsen) where some of his carpentry skills were still used. Item list: • Wooden box for carpentry tools • 1 x steel pliers • 2 x wooden hand planes • 1 x tin snips • 1 x wooden spirit level in canvas bag • 1 x small wooden spirit level • 5 x wooden handled hand-saws • 1 x wooden handled right- angle square • 1 x wooden handled tenon-saw • 1 x steel plumbers wrench • 1 x wooden handled hedge-clippers • 1 x cloth & leather measuring tape • 1 x wooden mallet • 1 x narrow wooden plane • 1 x plastic handled hand-saw • 1 x plane blade sharpening stone • 1 x brace hand drill • 1 x compass for marking wood • 1 x cold chisel • 1 x set of various chisels and hand drill bits in a canvas bag • 1 x steel sike • Various other drill bits, chisels, files • 1 x wooden handled trowel • • 2 x steel garden secateurs • carpentry, building, wood, tools, planes, levels, chisels, hammers, saws, drills, drill bits -

Tool - adjustable wrench
This type of wrench was called an adjustable twisted steel monkey wrench and was made around 1900. It was different from ordinary spanners and wrenches by the nature of the jaws being able to adjust to fit an individual nut, bolt or other fitting. The twisted handle wrenches were often forged by handtwist design on handle; jaws bent out of shape and worn. Hand-madechurchill island, tool, adjustable wrench, hand tool -
Melbourne Water
Photograph - Steel Pipeline, 1952
The Upper Yarra Reservoir supplies the Silvan Reservoir, which distributes water throughout the Melbourne metropolitan area. The dam was completed in 1957 and is a rolled earthfill and rockfill embankment. This photograph shows a 68" diameter steel pipeline that was to convey the water from the Upper Yarra Reservoir to the Silvan Reservoir. This photograph is significant as it provides a detailed insight into the Boards activity and construction of one of Melbourne's most important water supply systems. Furthermore, it is of historical importance to the history of Melbourne while it is representative of shaping Melbourne's environments, transforming and managing land and natural resources, and providing urban infrastructure and services. The photograph itself is aesthetically pleasing, through its depth of field and use of shape with an interesting composition. Plough, The Plough, 1860
Hugh Lennon began making ploughs in Carlton from 1960 and within 10yrs the patented steel plough ,suitable to Australian conditions was outselling all imported cast iron mouldboard ploughs. This general purpose mouldboard plough was used to form the streets in Yarrawonga during the 1880's........from James A. Irwin of Oaklands [formerly Lake Rowan] "This plough was used by William Christians and John Holmes [Jim Irwin's father -in-law]when they worked on the formation of Belmore St, Yarrawonga" circa 1880- 1890'sThe early settlers [1870] used this type of plough pulled by one horse.to prepare their ground for wheat sowing. From the early 1880's the double -furrow plough came into general use, pulled by 2 horses. Being a wheeled machine, it allowed the ploughman to sit on the plough and save miles of walking during ploughing operations. Over the years ploughs became bigger, and needed more horses to pull them. -

jack, 1908
Used by Ettore Alessandri who came to Australia in 1930's. He had land at Marlo and used this jack to clear the property of trees and stumps in 1940's and 1950's. The Trewhella Monkey jack was invented by the Trewhella brothers to help land clearance in Australia during the 1880's. Two jacks were made a 5 ton and a 10 ton. This item is a 10 ton model having two extension bars. The longer spear is used for larger tree work and the smaller spear for general work and small trees. Both models had two lifting claws at different heights. Th lower claw was useful for roots. The top claw was intended for going under loads and the bottom claw used for rolling timber. In 1929 the cost of the 10 ton model was thirteen pounds ten shillings. This item is an example of the machinery used by the early settlers to clear land. A 10 ton monkey jack.
