Donated to the Running Stitch collection by Mrs Faulkner of Bendigo after she saw the exhibition curated by Murray Walker at the Museum of Victoria in 1985 of memorabilia. Mrs Faulkner sent the wagga down on the train and Lois Densham picked it up from 'Travellers Aid' at Spencer Sreet station. Mrs Faulkner made this wagga for her father in his later years when a hot water bottle was considered too dangerous and a blanket was not warm enough.Printed cretonne cover of yellow and orange flowers, covering a wagga style quilt made of two standard size wheat bags opened out and stitched together. Gareth SAMSOM (19 November 1939- ) Born Melbourne Sansom describes a desire to constantly surprise and challenge himself as an artist. He had his first exhibition in 1959. His paintings of the 1960s were characterised by a distorted use of line, shape and colour and were influenced by abstract expressionism, Francis Bacon and Sidney Nolan. Over time, his work has also drawn on punk, dada, Basquiat, T.S. Eliot, urban graffiti, classical Greek philosophy and art theory across a variety of media ranging from drawing, printmaking and collage to photomontage and photography. Sansom lectured in Art at the Ballarat Teachers' college, and was appointed Head of Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1977-1985, and Dean School of Art at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1986-1991. He was artist-in-residence at the University of Melbourne in 1985, which was when he resumed his full-time painting practice with a series of large works on canvas. The Federation University Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.'Looking for God in Abstract Art 2' is a play on the debate over the respective virtues of abstraction and figuration that has preoccupied artists and critics for more than a century. Sanson has always walked a wobbly line between the two, adroitly avoiding falling headlong into either camp. It is also a gentle dig at the pretensions to higher spiritual meaning in abstract art. In the centre are two photographs, one of rubber masks and the other of the artist in a lurid fright wig and mask and using a spray can like a young tagger. These images, where the artist wears a mask and teeters on bright red platforms, are wonderfully ludicrous send-ups of the 'fine art' of painting. This book is one of two that were published posthumously after the death of author Sir H Rider Haggard. H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was a British author who wrote fiction and non-fiction works and had letters and articles published in newspapers and journals. The book is part of Flagstaff Hill's Pattison Collection. The book was published by the British firm Hutchinson & Co. operated for almost 100 years 1887-1985, before it underwent several mergers.This book is significant for being published after the death of the author Sir H Rider Haggard. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. This is a program for the 1997 Holiday Actors production of ‘Me and My Girl’. The Holiday Actors began in 1985 when a group of students from what was then C.B.C. College and St. Ann’s School performed in a production of ‘Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’. The following summer ‘The Boyfriend’ was staged and it was decided to extend the production in future years to include students in other secondary schools. These two photos were taken in front of the flagpole at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna probably in 1986. LTCOL Don Swiney MBE was appointed as CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1985 to 1987. He was subsequently promoted to Colonel and was Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corp from November 1988 to January 1991, and the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1993 to January 1996. In 1985, he and his wife Robyn set up the Torvil Pottery at Buninyong, Victoria. In 1991, they relocated to a 10 acre property in nearby Magpie and set up the Ballarat Clayfire Gallery with a working studio, gallery and residence. This is the programme of a musical production, ‘Half a Sixpence’ by the Warrnambool Holiday Actors. This company began in 1985 when a group of students from St Ann’s College and Christian Brothers College, Warrnambool (now merged to form the present day school, Emmanuel College), staged a musical production. The next year it was decided to extend membership to students across the district and membership today is still restricted to school students and young people. The Holiday Actors continue today with musical productions, mostly staged in school holidays. This programme is of interest as an example of the productions staged by the Warrnambool-based theatre company, Holiday Actors.
