Equipment - Glass Jar, F H Faulding
Most surgical wounds are closed primarily, but some are allowed to heal by secondary intention. This usually involves repeated packing and dressing of the raw wound surfaces. Although the long-term care of such wounds has devolved to the care of nurses in the community or out-patient setting, the initial wound dressing or cavity packing is done by the surgeon in the operating theatre. Many surgeons are unaware of the growth of the discipline of wound care, and still use traditional soaked gauze for dressing and packing open surgical wounds and cavities. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1963638/ The control of bleeding and wound management is vitally important for the survival of the patient.Clear glass round jar and lid, with heavy metal screw turning. He leased a newly-built shop at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade, known for many years as Bloore's Corner. He operated at that location until 1937 when the business was sold and the building still stands today. This tin is of interest as a memento of an important 20th century chemist shop in WarrnamboolThis is a small rectangular tin with metal hinges and a label pasted on the lid. Functional object - Thunderbox, Circa 1930’s
The Great Ocean Road was built by World War 1 returned servicemen. Tolls were collected as sections of the road were completed. The first toll house was at Grassy Creek. It operated from 1922 to 1932 when it was moved to The Springs at Cathedral Rock about 5 km east of Lorne. The thunderbox is believed to have been used here at sometime between 1932 and 1936This is a rare archeological find. Items n this location are often damaged by the action of the sea and salt air. It is intimately associated with the early years of the development of the Great Ocean Road and the daily life of the workers. It is a typical example of the type of toilet used at the time. This reclaimed timber thunder box is enclosed on three sides. There is a circular hole on the top with a wooden handled lid attached by a chain. box, first half 20th century
This box was used by Lindsay Thomson's mother, Annie M. Thomson for the transport of hen eggs from Orbost to Melbourne by rail - C 1940's -1950's. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987. Orbost Railway Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as the terminus of the Orbost railway line, and closed in 1987. The station was located on the west side of the Snowy River despite the town of Orbost being on the east side of the river, in order to save on the costs of a bridge over the river, which at the time had highly variable levels. This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost. A wooden box with two inside sections and a wooden lid which is secured on both ends by large nails/spikes which are fitted into a groove and are then turned. Container - Barrel, 19th to early 20th centuries
The original barrel was tapered outwards from top to base. It had three iron bands. Only the top and base remain. Barrels with outward tapering bases are balanced and stable. Barrels contain a wide range of contents, both liquid and dry, from wines and spirits to cement. Ships have used barrels as shipping containers for cargo. Specially made rope slings were used to move the barrels to and from the ships by rope blocks and cranes. A huge quantity of cement was brought to Warrnambool in barrels to construct the Breakwater, which was completed in 1890.This parts of a wooden barrel represent the containers used for cargo imported from England into Australia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As an example, the vessel Edinburgh Castle was wrecked in Lady Bay, Warrnambool, in 1888. The cargo onboard was a consignment of casks, or barrels of cement for the construction of Warrnambool’s new Breakwater, which was completed in 1890. Barrel; remnants of a tapered wooden barrel that once had three iron bands and removable top with heavy wooden handle.
