There was a Moran and Cato store in Surrey Hills.This biography tells the story of Fred Cato the businessman, who co-founded the Moran and Cato grocery chain. He was an influential Methodist layman, whose major involvements spanned more than forty years, from the Lonsdale Street Central Mission in 1893 to the Aboriginal Methodist Mission at Yirrkala in 1935. Marjorie Morgan noticed a beautiful wood carving of gumleaves and gumnuts by John Blogg. The carving, donated by a Box Hill resident, is in the impressive art collection of the City of Whitehorse. The more Marjorie researched the more she felt his achievements should not be permitted to disappear into the mists of time. Marjorie Morgan discovered some of his carvings and found nothing about the carver. She set herself the project and contacted many family members who had received a carving as a gift. She organised a family reunion so everyone could bring their carvings to one place (Surrey Gardens) and have them photographed for the book. Author: Alan Judge Holt amassed a significant collection of historical material related to the Surrey Hills area. Born in Moonee Ponds in 1912 to Edmund Holt and Ellen Ruby Sutton, he married Edna Jean Pallot in 1937. They lived at 62 Broughton Road, Surrey hills, had 3 sons and were strongly associated with the Surrey Hills Methodist Church. Alan was Secretary of the Victorian Lands Department and in his spare time recorded the occupancy of every property in Surrey Hills and Mont Albert at the beginning of each decade from 1890 to 1980. His collection of files and individual cards covers people, places, churches, clubs, businesses and other organisations in the area. In John Gilbert's Mount Helen studio he produced work marked with an incised 'Gilbert'. He had acquired a concern for form and an interest in sculpture from his teacher Neville Bunning, and from the British potter Hans Coper, whom he visited in 1968. He established two potteries in Ballarat , the Edinburgh Pottery (1972-2005) located within the Sovereign Hill precinct, and the Old Ballarat Pottery (1973-1994) located in the Old Ballarat Village opposite Sovereign Hill. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.A large ceramic mural by John Gilbert commissioned for the wall of the E.J. Barker Library. The mural features brown and green glaze with features of indigo. The work has no particular pictorial representation. It is an arrangement of colour and form, designed for enjoyment rather than to analyse. The theme relates to the development of the Universe through basic symbols such as plant forms, fish, birds and to mans development through symbols of science and engineering. The outer edge is symbolic of earths crust being peeled away to reveal science and nature. The mural depicts the changing of seasons from Winter to Summer (left to right). Samuel John CRUMP John Crump obtained a Diploma in Art (Pottery) in 1968 at the Ballarat Technical Art School. He lectured in ceramics at Ballarat Teachers' College (1972-1976) and State College Victoria Ballarat (1976 and 1991), as well as making functional stoneware, decorative and architectural forms and ceramic panels. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Wheel thrown pot with burnished Black Hill ochre slip over a local stoneware body. The pot was woodfired to 1300 degrees celcius in a Hoffman kiln. Built c 1889. The current Church of Christ is on the left. One of the foundation families was that of Mr and Mrs John Woodhead, who owned the land from Union Road to Warrigal Road and from Canterbury to Bona Vista Avenue in 1885. Mr Woodhead built 'Kirkland' in Union Road - in 1889/90. The land for the church was given by Mr Woodhead. The rotunda in the Surrey Gardens was built in 1912 and demolished in the early 1970's. The rotunda was dedicated to John Gray in appreciation of his service to the community.
