This booklet contains information on the Tinker families who served in World Wars One and Two. The Tinker family lived in South Warrnambool and four sons enlisted in World War One with James Tinker killed in action. There are records in the booklet of two members of the Tinker family who served in World War Two. This booklet is of interest as it gives information about the war services of members of the Tinker family who lives at South Warrnambool. It also has good examples of the cards and letters sent home to Warrnambool from soldiers in the World Wars. This is a booklet of 134 pages produced by a Tinker family member. It contains information (cards, newspaper reports, letters etc) on members of the Tinker families who enlisted in World Wars One and Two. May Coles (1915 - 2007) worked for more than 25 years at the exclusive Georges store in Collins St. May lived nearby the West Preston tram terminus and caught the tram to work. The work was commissioned by May to recall those special years of her work at Georges. This book, written by Pam Marriott, is subtitled ‘A Study of the Belfast and Western District Civil Service 1841-1886’. It contains information on the police, police magistrates, court officials, customs and immigration officials etc who lived and worked in the Port Fairy and Warrnambool districts in the 19th century and many of the incidents and events with which they were connected. The book includes much information that is relevant to Warrnambool’s past. This book is an important acquisition to the Warrnambool & District Historical Society library as it contains information on many 19th century Warrnambool personalities, including policemen and court officials. It also has detailed information on some events that occurred in the Warrnambool district in the 19th century. This is a soft cover book of 480 pages. These braces of the type known as ‘Police & Firemen’ were originally worn mostly by men wearing a uniform of some sort – police, firemen, members of the armed forces, postmen, other government officials etc. Later the braces were worn by men, mainly workmen, wanting a durable, good quality item to hold up their trousers. Braces are still worn occasionally by men today, mainly as a fashion item. These braces have no known local provenance but are retained as an example of an item of clothing worn by men 100 years ago. These men’s braces have a loop of long heavy quality elasticized cotton held at the top with a metal clip and with the loop forming two long ends made by a leather clamp near the top. The ends of the two cords have metal clips and two leather straps at each end with eyelets for attachment to buttons. The top of the loop also has two leather straps with eyelets. This ink-well was used in the Bacchus Marsh Court House, possibly for book-keeping and/or for court records. This type of ink-well and pen were in use everywhere in schools, businesses, courts, etc before the invention of the type-writer and the ball-point pen. Clerks were usually male and a good copperplate hand-writing was admired. Ink was often mixed by hand used a powdered ink mixed with water.Of local significance in the history of the town of Bacchus Marsh.Round pewter ink-well, with hinged lid and ceramic insert. Five round holes pierced in inner rim of metal to hold pens. Two ribbed bands around exterior of pot. Two bands indented around top of lid. Insert designed to hold ink. Rippon Lea mansion and garden was created for Sir Frederick Sargood, a wealthy Melbourne businessman, politician and philanthropist. This is why the program notes that the event was 'By kind permission of Liert. -Col. Sir Fred. Sargood, K.C.M.G.' Hand-made child's doll's house. Built by Mrs Yvonne Fitzmaurice and finished in 1979. This house was built as a 1:12 scale and is a model of a Californian house called Peppercorn farm. House was built by Yvonne and her family and took a period of three years. A lot of the furniture is handmade and the rest is collected from various shops. Catalogued books, manuals, repair kits etc used when building the house.The white painted verandah has a brass plate beside the door with the name Susan Fitzmaurice. In front of the door is a door mat and the veranda has a white hanging seat and a timber flower box with flowers."Susan Fitzmaurice" name on front of building. Date on plaque on top of front wall. Made by the firm of Thomas Stevens of Coventry, the English centre of ribbon weaving in the 19th century. Thomas Stevens, a local weaver, invented and developed in the 1860s the art of making woven silk items - book marks, greeting cards, art works etc, called Stevengraphs. Stevens opened a factory in London in 1878 and by the 1880s was producing over 900 woven silk designs as described on the backing sheet with this example. Stevengraphs are now collectors' Items and this bookmark included on its original marketing sheet is a good example of the company's mid sized range of bookmarks.This is a woven silk bookmark with multi-coloured patterns. coloured script and a sprig of roses, all on a white background.
