This case belonged to Leonard Thomas (VX21070) who was born on 23 Aug 1900 in Cardiff England. By the Second World War, Thomas had emigrated to Australia and was residing in Elwood when he enlisted in Caulfield in 1940. Thomas served during the war as a Private and was discharged on 31 May 1949 from the AIF Mov and Control Group. His full service records are not currently available via the National Archives Australia and so it is unclear whether this case was part of the equipment of his role or a personal item.This case contains a number of inscriptions which may aid researchers to understand the life and movements of the owner, Leonard Thomas. The apparent crest is of special interest, suggesting that Leonard Thomas was connected to equine activities though the unavailability of his service records mean this fact is not confirmed. The item has interpretive potential, to discuss matters of equipment, emigration, use of horses during war and possibly leisure activities if the crest is taken as a reference to polo.Horse shoe shaped case in brown leather constructed of a lid and base. Used for storing shirt collars. Lid and base respectively constructed of two pieces of leather (one top and one edge) which are stitched to heavy card interior lining, mustard yellow in colour. The lid and base are held together by a sewn on leather strip and fastened at the top with a metal buckle; the holed strap through which the buckle attaches has broken. This strap in turn passes vertically down the back of the case and underneath (forming the strip which joins the two halves). Exterior base carries handwritten inscriptions, as does the interior lid. Black ink stamps throughout.Stamps read "L THOMAS" along an upturned horse shoe, underneath which are possibly clubs and an up-facing arrow. Service number written on side of case reads "VX21070". Handwritten inscription reads "Leonard Thomas/33 [illegible three words]/Cardiff/April 20th 1921." Emma Thomas Collection: Items were owned by Emma Courtis, nee Thomas (1854-3/3/1937. Family lived in Hamelin St, White Hills. Clothing items possibly made by Emma or a local person in White Hills area and used around 1890s. Emma's family include Elizabeth Penrose (mother), Solomon Thomas (father), and Richard Courtis, a blacksmith (her husband). Richard Courtis married Emma Thomas in 1875 and they moved to Melbourne in 1922.Three digital photographs relating to Emma Thomas. a. Emma in her later years but no date recorded. b. The wedding photo is of Emma and Richard's daughter, Ada, who married Hedley Thomas. Donor's grandfather, Richard, is seventh in the third row from the left. He had a moustache then, but she remembers him as a bald man with round glasses. Richard and Emma Courtis are in the third row, fourth, and fifth from the left of the photo. c. The Wilks Creek Bridge is a former timber and bluestone road bridge on the Yarra Track, and is located just off the Black Spur route, between Narbethong and Marysville, Victoria, Australia. It was built in 1870 to the design of colonial Public Works Department engineer Clement Wilks as part of the construction of a new road to the Woods Point and Jordan Goldfields. Like many bridges of the period, it had a timber superstructure employing squared beams supported by struts and straining pieces, on cut bluestone abutments. The bridge was remodelled around 1900 by engineer John Monash of the famous bridge-engineering firm of Monash and Anderson. It was last used for heavy vehicular traffic in 1980 following the realignment of Marysville Road, and was left to decay until its demolishment in 2008. All timber traces of the bridge were destroyed in the 2009 Black Saturday fires. Donald Clark Collection.Two typed documents, each of several pages. One is a transcript of part of the diary of James Cheetham during the time of his voyage from Liverpool, England to Tarnagulla, Australia. The other connected document is a typed account by amateur historian Donald Clark with the title 'Early History of Sandy Creek and Tarnagulla Goldfields'. It was 'transposed' by him in 1997 from a manuscript written in 1928 by the wife of James Cheetham, Dulcie. Her manuscript was compiled from the contents of original diaries she had which had been written by James Cheetham and Ed Peters when they lived in Sandy Creek/Tarnagulla during the towns early years. -
