The Community Centre was built in the early 1950’s as an all-purpose hall for the social and recreational use of the workers and families employed on the Victorian state government Kiewa Hydro-electric scheme. The hall was originally called Mt Beauty Recreation Centre and later changed to Mt Beauty Community Centre. It has been the heart of the community for over 65 years and had a heritage listing put on it around the year 2000. The Alpine Shire secured a heritage grant and the hall was restored to its former glory in 2000. This postcard was hand-embroidered in France and sent to Australia during World War I. A large piece of silk would be hand-embroidered by French women with the same pattern 20 times or so, then the large completed piece would be sent to a factory to be cut up and the individual pieces mounted on card. They had varying themes and patterns, greetings such as happy birthday or thinking of you, featuring butterflies, flowers and sometimes patriotic flags of allied countries involved in the war. They were marketed to troops to send home to female members of the family and girlfriends. It was estimated 10 million silk postcards were produced in Europe between 1915 and 1919. During World War 1 postcards were a welcome means of personal communication for many people. On front it shows gold line dropping down froma horizontal bar. The tips of the gold lines show a Fleur De Lys on each tip. The phrase "Postcard Album" is also printed in gold. Inside are numerous pages cut with various slots to hold postcards. The postcards are brilliant, beautiful and awe inspiring - their colours, cottons etc. Most are sewn, some are hand painted. Hetti Perkins introduces this collection of reproductions of of Western Arnhem Land bark paintings, rock art, woven fibre art and wooden sculpture that was exhibited by the Art Gallery of NSW in 2004, emphasising the cultural foundations of the Kuninjku artists, their beliefs, artistic conventions and innovations. Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling either during World War 1, or just after, or while returning to Australia. These postcard scenes include the Cathedral and a bridge in Florence, and church and the Pantheon in Rome, a view of Lausanne and a fountain in Versailles and an interior from Brussels. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving Portsea in 1920.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War.
