Sign, "END OF SECTION - C1", 1951?
These signs became necessary after the introduction of CITY SECTION fares in July 1951 to indicate to conductors and passengers the boundary of the city section, where a special fare applied. Used by SEC until 9/1971. Acquired by BTPS Museum in Oct. 1971 from SECV. Used at Dawson & Sturt St. Was physically removed from pole by levering it off, damaging lower part of sign. See item 704 for a plan showing the Ballarat tram sections.Demonstrates a SECV End of Section sign for a particular location.Sheet steel folded for a pole-mounted sign and then enamelled with words (white background, black letters) "END OF SECTION" on both sides. Drilled with two holes for mounting bolts on the small leg. Similar style to that used by the M&MTB. Has had the words "City" and "C1" painted on the sign in black paint, which is in poor condition. Letter - four duplicated foolscap sheets, dated 1/2/1962 to the Town Clerks of the City of Ballarat and the Borough of Sebastopol advised that the SECV is planning to close the Ballarat system. Details the losses, fares not covering costs, TRB for alternative bus services, the future of the tramway employees. Signed by D H Munro, SECV Secretary Enclosed a number of copies of the letter for Councillors and the Press. Yields information the 1962 move to close both Ballarat and Bendigo and the impact of the loss of employment on the SECV crews and wages employees.Memo - foolscap sheets - typed carbon copy. Details the sign on / sign off times for each run number operated by Motormen / Conductors and where they signed on, either depot or city and the total time worked for that particular shift. Has "LJD / 3/70", showing that Les Denmead authorised the roster. Was part of D. J. Everett papers. 2296.1 - as above, but typed original in a vertical or portrait format, rather than a landscape format. Six photographs showing traffic congestion that detains progress of trams in city streets. Road traffic congestion that detained tramcars in the city centre and on selected suburban roads had been a major concern to tramway operators dating back to the early 1900s. During the 1960s, and perhaps earlier, the Tramways Board regularly proposed ways of keeping motor traffic off the trams tracks, but little progress was achieved.Yields information about the perennial issue of motor traffic detaining trams. 967 waits at traffic lights at the junction of Vaughan St and Lancefield Rd (a non-freeway section of the Tullamarine Freeway) to cross to the tramway ROW parallel to Matthews Ave. The driver in shirt sleeves is about to lean out of his left doorway to press the traffic light activation button. The tram displays 'City 59' with run number 'E22'. All right-side windows are closed yet the sliding doors are open which is unusual for a revenue service car.
