Football matches were a popular onshore activity and Annual reports note Reverend Weller in the 1920s managed to establish a temporary pitch and a change room facility near Port Melbourne. The donor, Wally Nancarrow, was a tailor in the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney (from Nov. 1927- Aug. 1935 on Trove) so the relation with the Melbourne Mission is unclear. The shield can be seen hanging above the canteen on item 1713 (dated c. 1950) and in the Celia Little Room. The Annual Report 1936 mentions a shield (p11) seen on page 15: "Football: The competition has been extended this year, and in the future is to include all matches played in Australian ports. The Victorian Missions to Seamen Shield is the present trophy, and the Assistant-Chaplain has been appointed Organiser and Honorary Secretary." The shield may have been done after the one mentioned in the annual report and we can only speculate nothing was ever engraved because of WW2.The collection holds many historic and later contemporary colour photos of crew football teams posed onshore and on decks. Sports and games were an essential part of the welfare services offered by the Mission when seamen had long shore leave.Wooden shield featuring two circular disk silver plaques one on each side at the top. One with the engraving of a ship and the other with the engraving of a footballer. At the top in the centre is an anchor in relief gilded with a rope attached, falling across the front of it and coiling at the bottom of the anchor. Two flags crossing over in the middle of the shield; one the Australian Navy flag and the other the Mission to Seamen flag. Laying over the top of the poles of the flags is a brass banner with the competition description engraved on it. At the bottom is a brass scroll with an inscription about who presented it and where. The shield has 12 smaller, blank silver shields along the sides. This holster was copied by the Canadians from the British Pattern 1937 web equipment designed to hold the British .38 Calibre Enfield No.2 Mk 1 Revolver. Canada produced its own P37 webbing during WW2 and commenced production in 1940. Two companies produce the vast majority - Z L & T Ltd in Guelph, Ontario and M S & U Ltd (Montreal Suspender and Umbrella Manufacturing Company Limited) in Montreal, Quebec. A great deal of webbing was sent to Australia. These pistol cases saw much use by our troops during WW2 and holstered US Smith & Wesson 'Victory' model and various British Webley .38 revolvers in addition to Enfields.Khaki cotton webbing holster with press studded flap for a .38 calibre revolver. The 11th Australian Infantry Battalion AIF was was among the first infantry units raised for the AIF during the First World War It was first raised at Black Boy Hill Camp in Western Australia on 17 August 1914 and recruited from the militia units. The picture of the 11th Battalion at the Cheops pyramid in Egypt in 1915 was taken just before the landing at Anzac Cove. Not many of the soldiers in this picture survived the 8 month campaign. After the Campaign on the Gallipoli Peninsula, the 11th Battalion went on to serve with distinction in France and Belgium from 1916-18. They returned to Australia at the end of the war and disbanded on the 5 February 1919. The Battalion was awarded a Kings Colour for it’s service during the war which was held in the of custody the Militia 2/11th Battalion. Portable candleholders were commonly in use in Australian homes in the 1800s. Candles were very expensive in Australia and often were not available in stores. However, after 1850 the price of candles was reduced and they became readily available throughout Australia. Candleholders were popular as they protected furniture from hot wax. The dish around the candle stem collected the hot wax that could be reused later. When carrying the candleholder, the dish also protected the hand from the hot wax. This candle-holder is an example of an item commonly used before electricity was connected to the area.The candleholder is a hollowed round,saucer-shape with a ring finger-grip on the side. It has been enamelled but the original blue paint has worn off and it is very chipped and rusted.candlestick-holder lighting
