Part of the Leo Reoch Cohn Collection. Leo Reoch Cohn served in both World War 0ne and World War Two. He enlisted in the 1st AIF on 6.5.1915, initially in the 22nd battalion (No. 1039), aged 18. Shortly after, on 11.9.1915, he transferred to the 8th LHR and embarked for Egypt on 23.9.1915, serving in both Egypt and Palestine. During that period of service, he transferred to the 1st Australian Light Car Patrol on 8.9.1917. This unit later became the 1st Australian Armoured Car Section. Leo began his return journey to Australia on 16.5.1919. Shortly after his RTA, he was discharged. While on active service overseas, he was hospitalized on a number of occasions due to illness. During World War Two, Leo enlisted in the 21st Battalion VDC (No. V360272) on 18.5.1942 at the age of 44. He was appointed Lieutenant on 25.6.1942. Leo's VDC service was terminated on 31.10. 1945 following the end of World War Two. .1) Tailored khaki woollen officer's dress jacket with silk like fabric lining. This is part of a crosscut saw raker/jointer/guage set used to bend the tip of each cutter tooth for cross cut logging saws. The logging saws used in the early 1900's for the clearing of forests required constant sharpening of their "cutting teeth". The logging of forested areas during these times was very much a "hands on" method of either one or two men by the use of saw or hand axe. This item was used by the surveyors commissioned by The S.E.C. Victoria Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme project mapping the relevant Alpine region. Chain saws, chain and ball(clearing) and bulldozing methods came in the mid 1900's.This particular saw sharpening method was used by surveyors laying down boundaries for the S.E.C. Victoria Hydro Electricity Scheme (1920's). This item was given to a local Kiewa Valley lad who accompanied the initial surveyors. The lad was responsible for the tendering and feeding of the surveyors "pack horses". Surveys work during this period and in these dense mountainous terrain of the Victorian Alps was both exhausting and hazardous. Overnight accommodation at various log cabins was not always possible and swag/tent alternative was the "fall back".This cast iron Spring Setting tool has a main body of angle iron contours with one end tappered into a flat circular extension with a slit (3/32" wide) running from the top to nearly the centre(15mm). This slit is to allow the bending of each "cutter tooth" of the cross cut saw. The "bottom of this slit has a semi circular ending. Protruding from one side of the bar body, and close to the "slit" is a tounge like extension (wedge) to fasten the spring set tool into a tree stump. Shaped like a funnel at the rear, the handle extends into a 16 cm stem which would fit over the walking cane. Eight raised circles decorate the stem, giving a .8 cm decorative ridge. BHS CollectionGran Wearne was born in Cornwall in 1855. She married Thomas Wearne in 1878 and they migrated to Australia with two daughters after a stay in the USA. She has six children, but only three survived. In 1897 she lost her husband and had to depend on the community for food and clothing. She got some milking goats which supplied milk for the family and she was also able to sell some. Her surviving son lived with her. He was a miner like his father. In later years she got the age pension. She died in October 1936. This Bible is kindly on loan from Parks Victoria. It was presented to Tom (Thomas) Pearce in August 1878 by a friend of the Loyal Orange Institution of Victoria, in recognition of invaluable service rendered in saving the life of Eva (Evelyn) Carmichael when the Loch Ard was wrecked off the coast of Victoria, near Port Campbell. Tom’s granddaughter, Angela Elizabeth Pearce, has written her name inside the front cover. She was born in England in 1925 and died at Woollahra, NSW, in 1944; she was only 19 years old. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ‘LOCH ARD’ (1873-1878): - The sailing ship Loch Ard was one of the famous Loch Line ships that sailed from England to Australia. Barclay, Curdle and Co. built the three-masted iron vessel in Glasgow in 1873. It had sailed three trips to Australia and one trip to Calcutta before its fateful voyage. Loch Ard left England on March 2, 1878, under the command of recently married, 29-year-old Captain Gibbs. It was bound for Melbourne with a crew of 37, plus 17 passengers. The general cargo reflected the affluence of Melbourne at the time. Onboard were straw hats, umbrellas, perfumes, clay pipes, pianos, clocks, confectionery, linen and candles, and a heavier load of railway irons, cement, lead and copper. Other cargo included items intended for display at the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880, the most famous of which was the life-size Minton Majolica peacock. After three months at sea, the Loch Ard was close to its destination. On June 1, 1878, Captain Gibbs couldn’t see any signs of land or the Cape Otway lighthouse due to poor visibility. When the fog lifted at 4 am, the sheer cliffs of Victoria's west coast were much closer to them than Captain Gibbs expected. He failed to manage the vessel, and the ship struck a reef at the base of what is now named Mutton Bird Island, near Port Campbell. The passengers and crew were thrown overboard on impact. The lifeboat was launched by Tom Pearce but crashed into the side of Loch Ard and capsized. He clung to its overturned hull and sheltered under it as it drifted out to sea. The tide brought him back to what is now called Loch Ard Gorge. He swam to shore and found a cave for shelter. A passenger, Eva Carmichael, had raced onto the deck and was confronted by towering cliffs above the ship. A huge wave swept her off into the cold sea. She saw Tom Pearce on a small rocky beach and yelled to attract his attention. He swam out and dragged her to the shelter of the cave. He revived her with a bottle of brandy from a case that had washed up on the beach. Tom scaled a cliff in search of help. He came across two men from Glenample Station, three and a half miles away. He told the men of the tragedy and then returned to the gorge while the two men rode back to the station to get help. The two shipwreck survivors were taken to Glenample Station to recover. Eva stayed at the station for six weeks before returning to Ireland by steamship. Sadly, Tom and Eva were the only survivors of the 54 people on board the Loch Ard. In Melbourne, Tom Pearce received a hero's welcome. His rewards for his bravery included the Gold Medal of the Royal Humane Society, a gold watch and £1000 from the Victorian Government, a set of nautical instruments, including binoculars, from the people of Sydney and £60 from the people of Warrnambool. In August 1878, he was also presented with a Bible by a friend of the Loyal Orange Institution of Victoria, also known as the Orange Order. The Bible is significant for its connection with Tom (Thomas) Pearce, as it was awarded to him for his rescue of the shipwrecked Eva Carmichael when the Loch Ard was wrecked. It has kindly been loaned to Flagstaff Hill, which holds one of the largest collections of items from the Loch Ard in Victoria. The Loch Ard is now a historic shipwreck. It was one of the worst disasters and is the most well-known wreck on the Victorian Heritage Register. Together, the artefacts have a high potential to help interpret the story of the Loch Ard. The vessel is archaeologically significant as it is the remains of a large international passenger and cargo ship. The Loch Ard collection is important to Victoria’s history. It includes uncommon, rare or endangered aspects of Victoria’s cultural history. Book: The Holy Bible. A black leather-bound book with red edges on the pages, and a metal clasp at the middle front of the book. Brown paper pages are pasted inside the covers, and gold detailing is around the edges of the inside covers. Coloured lithograph pictures are on separate pages throughout the book. A child-like, handwritten pencil script inscription is on the left front endpaper. The facing right endpaper has lines of italic, black pen and ink script, with some lines underlined in red, and ruled red borders on three sides. John Nunn was one of the earliest brickmakers on record in Ballarat and has a road named for him - Nunn Street - where he resided..1) An oblong-shaped timber box open at top. Only butt joints are used. Iron strapping wraps around the vertical pieces of timber and across the top edge of the box. The longest pieces of vertical timber protrude past the end and are shaped like solid handles - one is broken. On each end piece there are small, blank iron plates held with screws. The base piece of timber is made from two different width weatherboard-style timbers. The nails in the base piece appear to be hand-made. Two items of newborn clothing dating to 1944. The first item is a dress and the second is a singlet. Both items are made from wool and are in new, unused condition. The clothing was owned by Mrs L. Brawdrup and was donated to the National Wool Museum in 2022 by Lila Gore.Clothing item one is a cream woven dress. It is finished at the sleeves, neck, and hem with a white lace trim. The trim is formed from a thread that has a metallic gleam, presumably cotton. The dress is styled under the neck with a stitched patterned of frills and flowers in the same white metallic thread. The dress gathers under the armpits, similar in style to a dirndl. At the rear, the dress is loosened and fastened by 3 press stud buttons in an opening at the centre. Clothing item two is a cream woven singlet. It is finished at the sleeves, neck, and hem with a white lace trim. The trim is formed from a thread that has a metallic gleam, presumably cotton. The Kew Historical Society's map collection includes a substantial number of real estate subdivision plans, mainly of Kew but also of surrounding suburbs in Melbourne. Most of the subdivision plans date from the 1920s and 1930s when the districts old homes and local farmland were being split up to accommodate residential growth in the postwar period. These early plans were assembled by a local firm, Jas R Mather & McMillan, which had an office in Cotham Road. Many of the plans, and sometimes photos, were annotated by the agents.Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence for the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens.The photograph may also be aesthetically significant depending o the importance of the photographic atelier.Real estate photograph for a local agent by the Kew photographer, Josiah Earl Barnes. The photo is of a weatherboard or brick rendered bungalow with a twisted wire fence. Given Barnes' status a a Kew photographer, the house is probably locate din Kew or East Kew. Unfortunately the handwritten information on the mount bordering the photo is damaged and cannot be read. The bungalow has a gabled, tiled roof with terra cotta finials at the front of both gables. The house has a central doorway, framed by a pseudo portico supported by four wooden columns. The 1st Kew Scouts was one of the first Scout Troops in Victoria, being formed in 1909. From 1927 they met in a magnificent Scout Hall in Disraeli Street, Kew until it was demolished in 1993. Still operating (in 2020) from their new Scout Hall on the corner of Kilby Road and Kellett Grove, Kew.Large sepia photograph of a 1st Kew Scout in uniform. Given that it is a large-sized studio photograph that had been framed and kept for decades, it is likely to be one of the founders of the Scout Troop, perhaps Captain Peowrie. Like many of the early Scout Troops, a man with a military background initially led 1st Kew. Having joined the Scout Troop in 1911 or early 1912, Captain Peowrie went on to serve in the Army during the First World War, rejoining the Scout Troop at war’s end. The first sculpture awarded the Shire of Eltham 'Art in Public Places' Award/Commission. The Judges were Inge King, Jenny Zimmer and Daryl Jackson. The work deals with the juxtaposition of suburban and rural surroundings. This scupture is a typical example of the artist's oevre of the period. This sculptre is site specific and refers to the nature of the environment. The colour - bushfire red / sienna - alludes to the history of fire in the urban/rural fringe and the title, as well as the sculpture's shapes, forms and material refer to the natural and local elements. Judges report noted: "The most vital and expressive work for the site...with a great sense of dynamic movement and vibrant colour. Its' abstract forms will enliven the surroundings and the urban and natural environment. This work is the most appropriate for the site and expressive of the dynamics of an evolving community in which artistic discourse and debate has always thrived." The work has acquired the status of a major landmark from the National Trust. The Breeze is an abstract work made out of welded steel and painted in enamel in bush fire red / sienna. It comprises a series of flat, cut-out shapes, interlocking at different angles, giving the impression of being hinged together rather than fixed. The work references nature and the built environment. Its geometric shapes suggest man-made structures within industry and suburban life, while rural areas can be identified by the organic flame-like shapes fanned by the wind. The circular cut-out in the eye mimics the sun, symbolising the intense heat of the Australian climate, while the colour red alludes to the history of bushfire within the urban and rural fringe. This volume of maps is believed to have been compiled by staff at the Shire of Bacchus Marsh and was presumably used to inform and assist Shire staff and Councillors in the carriage of their duties.This collection of maps are significant due to their rarity as many of them are unique maps made for local purposes in the Bacchus Marsh region. They are also of strong research value containing a wide variety of information including landholders, land sales, infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, public, commercial and private buildings, houses, land use, and geographic features over multiple decades from the late nineteen century into the middle part of the twentieth century.One bound volume of maps comprising cadastral maps, (indicating property owners and land boundaries), land plans and real estate auction plans and advertising material, and other maps indicating major infrastructure like proposed roads and irrigation areas. Most of the maps and plans are of Bacchus Marsh and nearby areas but some maps are of nearby towns such as Melton, Ballan and Blackwood. The volume comprises 52 pages. It's difficult to tell exactly when this photograph was taken, besides that it was when the line which is now Puffing Billy was in operation - that is, between 1900 and 1954. Location-wise, given the proximity to the railway it was likely taken from Belgrave-Gembrook Road to the west of Emerald, looking towards the town, though it is unclear exactly where this could have happened. This could also be taken from one of the curves in then railway to the east of Emerald, though the roads it could be taken from were historically limited.This photograph shows an earlier view of Emerald and its surroundings, mostly lacking the development that has effected the land over the past centuries.This item is a modern copy of an older black and white photograph. It is relatively blurry and pixelated, indicating it may have been expanded from a smaller photograph. It depicts an unpaved road; the photographer is standing to the right of the road, looking down it as it approaches from behind the photographer, appears in the bottom-left, ascends a hill and disappears into the top-right of the photograph. This photograph was taken as a postcard in the Rose Stereograph Company's Rose Series. It was number P. 1463 in the series, meaning it was likely taken in the 1930s or early 40s. It depicts 'West Gembrook Road' - likely now Old Gembrook Road or Belgrave-Gembrook Road - surrounded by fields on one side and small home on the other. Over 14000 Rose Series postcards were produced over the lifetime of the Company, capturing everything from major landmarks to quiet scenic roads like this. Mary Craig Cox was born in Winton, Queensland, on 23 November 1881. She was 41 when she joined Victoria Police on 25 September 1925. Her Record of Conduct and Service describes her as being 5'4" tall, weighing 8st, 2lb, of thin build with blue eyes and brown hair. She was the third police woman to join the ranks and, like the others, she was attached to the plain clothes branch of Victoria Police. She retired on 23 November 1936, having reached the compulsory retirement age of 55. Quartz is one of the most common minerals in the world. It is formed by a 3d structure of silicon and oxygen. While it is a simple mineral, it can come in a variety of shapes and colours. When quartz is pure it is colourless, transparent and can appear glass-like. Better known and more rare variations of quartz include amethyst and smoky quartz. This specimen is a vein of quartz in Breccia Conglomerate. Breccia is coarse-grained clastic rock which is made up of broken rock fragments and held together by mineral cement. The locality of this specimen is unknown. While quartz is a very common mineral and does not have rarity, it is an important material in industrial settings. One of it's physical and chemical properties is that it is piezoelectric, which means it can be used to generate an electric charge. This has made it useful in the manufacturing of timekeeping devices. This specimen was donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880 among a larger collection of geological specimens. It was collected as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria which begun in 1852 as a response to the Gold Rush. Collections were distributed to organisations across Australia to encourage the further study of the scientific makeup of the Earth. The original General Store at Research was also known as Doneys. It was located near where the present Main Road Research Shops are situated (opposite Ingrams Road). Charles Doney shown in front of the store. His wife Blanche is at the gate and his mother on the verandah. They had two boys Lance and Bill. The mother gave her daughter the opportunities and the graces. One of the children lived in a railway carriage behind the Church of England Research. A single chimney was unusual for a building like this. Anne Currie kept a diary more like a day book of her family's activities throughout their lives. The Diaries were commenced by John on 8th March 1813, but on 28 September of that year there is an entry 'John Currie has tired of keeping a Diary and has handed it over to me - C. Manufactured in Germany, such scales were widely used in Infant Welfare Centres across Victoria (and possibly other states) in the 1970s. A midwife/infant welfare nurse named Martine Jackson recalls seeing a set of weighing scales like this as a student in the 1970s in Melbourne. These weighing scales were part of a rare collection of medical, dental and pharmaceutical objects belonging to a tourism business, Kryal Castle, near Ballarat, Victoria from 1974. As collection records were not retained by Kryal Castle, the further provenance of these scales has been lost.Set of metal weighing scales. Consists of a curved dish sitting on a base, with a slide gauge in imperial measurements at the front. The gauge ranges from 0 to 32 lbs. Dish and base are coated in cream coloured paint.
