Gordon Spittle was the youngest of Three brothers. He grew up in Creswick and attended Creswick Grammar School. Gordon purchased 'Mt Cavern' in 1912. It had 4 years of a 10 year lease to run. His mother and father took delivery of it on 1 April 1916. They lived there and farmed it until Gordon returned from active service in May 1919. S. Gordon Spittle married Violet Holmes and both lived at "Mt Cavern" until their deaths. Gordon died in 1942 aged 51. Violet Holmes-Spittle died in 1949 aged 56. Handwritten lower front 'Do we look down hearted?' Handwritten verso 'Egypt, March 23rd 1916. Dear Mrs Troup. Your very fine and interesting letter dated Feb 15th came to hand to-day and needless to add was delighted to receive it, and can promise you that I'll answer it at my earliest opportunity. We are now having a better time since we came to this part, as we are able to enjoy a little of city life, although we have a good deal more work to do, & which is mostly carting goods to & from the ships & railway stations etc, all of which is interesting & quite a change from our life on the Desert. The "Listening to the Voices" project aims to preserve the recorded memories of Portland C.E.M.A. ( Council for Encouragement of Music and the Arts) early members in order to enable access to local historians, family historians and current members. Bob and Jean Stuchbery were active members in the post WW2 era and throughout the 1950s. Jean made cameo appearances into the 1980sThe series of oral history interviews (1983-1990) captured the memories of some active early members of the Portland Council for Encouragement of Music and the Arts. First hand memories of the formation of the organisation in 1945, early activities of its groups, fundraising and building of the CEMA Arts Centre provide a window into community life in Portland and District in the post WW2 era. The two men photographer are Angelos Lucas and Rev. Patsogiannis. Angelos arrived in Australia around the turn of century shortly after his brothers, Ioannis and Andreas. They owned the Lucas Cafe under the clocks of Flinders Street Station and the business remained in the family till the 1960s. Ioannis and Andreas were founding members of the IPS and Angelos was the second president of the Society between 1924.-1926. Angelos was also president of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria for three terms, from 1930-32, 1934-40 and 1949-52.The Lekatsas brothers were prominent members of Greek community life in Melbourne from the early 1900s.A black and white portrait photograph of two men. Irini Pappas and her husband Paul Anagnostou are photographed with the captain's wife (right), Irini's father's first cousin during the visit of the SS Gratsos ship. She was one of only two women ever qualified as first mate. At the time the Women's Weekly ran a double page spread featuring her. in Greece on board a ship travelling to or from Ithaca.'George D. Gratsos - Ithaca' printed on the buoy indicates that the ship was part of the Gratsos shipping company. The shipping activities of the Gratsos family from Ithaca began in 1902, when Georgios D. Gratsos (1870–1931) bought the ship Odysseus, in partnership with the Dracoulis family, of which Gratsos' wife was a member. The wedding in 1930 of George Chilianis and Anthi Mavrokefalou. To the left of the couple is the groom's sister Ekaterini Chilianis-Koutsouveli; on the far left is her husband Nikolaos Koutsouvelis (Black) holding their young son Billy. To the left of the bride is Vasiliki Koutsouveli-Adamopoulou. Both George and Anthi were born in Ithaca and migrated to Australia in the 1920s. Like many early Ithacan immigrants George eventually went into his own business in the 1930s in partnership with Panayioti (Peter) and Theofilos Kouvalias, a fruit shop, the 'South Melbourne Fruit Palace' at 288 Clarendon Street, South Melbourne. Anthi was an active member of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society was awarded Honorary Life membership in 1995 - the first time that women were bestowed this award by the IPS.A copy of a studio photograph of a family wedding group. Edith Sarah Pickford was born and raised in Clunes, Victoria. She is the only daughter of John Pickford and Betsey (Robbins) Pickford and sister of Henry Pickford, John Pickford, William Harold Pickford, Horace Pickford DCM, Arthur Pickford and Charles Alexander Pickford. [ Research by Edith;s granduaghter Jane Dyer (nee Chatham)] Edith's maternal grandmother was a descendent of Donald Cameron, the first recorded European settler in the Clunes area.The Pickford family's pioneer settler legacy in the Clunes- Glendaruel district is commemorated with a Pickford Road and displays in the Clunes Museum. A collection of Edith's song music was donated to the Clunes Museum by her great grand-daughter in 2023. Edith married a local farmer, Henry Smerdon Holmes from "Sauchieburn" Ascot, Victoria. Henry was a descendant of the family who had inherited their maternal ancestor's, Catherine Coghill (nee Holmes), Ascot - Coghills Creek property. This branch of the Coghill Family descended from the district's pioneer settler, Captain Coghill. Edith and Henry spent all their married life, and raised 4 children Jack [John], Bill [William], [Mary] Elizabeth and David, at Ascot. She was buried in the Coghills Creek Cemetery with her husband, Henry Smerdon Holmes, and their son, David, in 1967. Port of EchucaFunctional object - Paddlesteamer hull, Westgood & Air, P.S Success, 1877
The PS Success was built in Moama in June 1977 by GB Air for Westwood & Air. It was built to tow barges of cargo along the Darling and Murray rivers, as well as running as a passenger boat from Swan Hill to Mildura during 1915-16. The Success was the last paddlesteamer actively working on the river when she performed several rescue voyages to flood bound properties along on the Darling River, rescuing sheep and a large cargo of wool. The vessel ended her working life in 1957 and was put up on the bank at Ned's corner, 80km west of Mildura. In 1996, the Pollard family donated the vessel to the Riverboat Historical and Preservation Society of Mildura with plans to restore her to her former glory. This project became increasingly difficult for the dedicated volunteers to handle and the Port of Echuca took ownership in 2009 in the hopes that further restoration work can be done at the Port. The Succes is currently on static display at the northern end of the Port of Echuca. The PS Success had a long, colourful history towing barges on the Murray River and in particular in the Mildura, Wentworth and Ned's Corner regions. She was the last paddlesteamer to be working on the river system right up until the 1956 floods towing the barge Vega, where at one point both boat and barge smashed into trees on a wild, uncontrolled journey downstream where she was damaged and later lay stranded on Ned's Corner.Composite timber hull, 3-inch red gum planks on angle iron frames. This is the story of the work of Father Tom Brophy, mainly concentrating on his work with youth in Warrnambool. Ordained as a Catholic priest in 1962, Fr Brophy worked in Ballarat and established a Ballarat Youth Centre and a Hostel for young men. He was moved to Warrnambool and arrived in early 1972. Although in Warrnambool for just two years Fr Brophy had an enormous impact in the community, establishing the Freedom Zone Youth Centre and the Warrnambool Home for Boys. He died at the early age of 45 and was buried in Warrnambool with a large number of local people attending his funeral. A Brophy Memorial Hostel was established and later developments include a Youth Centre in Timor Street and the present day Brophy Family and Youth Services organization. This book is of some importance as it outlines the work in Warrnambool of Father Tom Brophy, a Catholic priest whose name has become synonymous in Warrnambool with youth projects. He is one of the important community workers in Warrnambool in the 20th century and this book details his contribution and impact.This is a paper back book with a blue/yellow cover with a photograph of Father Tom Brophy in bluish tones on the front cover. ... and celebrations are a very important part of Greek family life ...The photograph of Dennis (Menelaos) Varigos and his son John was taken at Maxims on 5 August 1998 at a family gathering celebrating Dennis' eightieth birthday. Dennis was the son of Ioannis and Ioanna-Giannoula (Lekatsas) Varvarigos who arrived in Melbourne from Ithaca in 1914 and owned The Palace Tea Rooms, adjacent to the Palace Theatre in Bourke Street, where Dennis grew up. Dennis was a very active member of the IPS and served as president from 1960 - 1965. The photograph was taken when Kalypso Sofianos (nee Raftopoulos), seated in the front, was presented with her Honorary Life Membership of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society on the 4 June 1995. She is surrounded by her family: Front, her son and daughter Spiros (Pip) Sofianos and Nina Mills. At the back from L-R: Theone Sofianos, Kevin Mills, Eva Mills and Nick and Lynne Sofarnos. Kalypso arrived in Australia in 1936 from Ithaca and in 1937 she married Dimitrios Sofianos, also from Ithaca.The Honorary Membership is awarded to long time active members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society in recognition of their years of service they have given to the Society and the wider community. Brother and sister, Panogiannis (Peter) Raftopoulos ( Bourlotos) and Kalypso Sofianos are photographed with Kalypso's children, Konstandina (Nina) and Spiros (Pip). Panogiannis was actively involved with the IPS. He was elected Secretary only about a year after he came to Melbourne. He proposed the introduction of the IPS Tertiary Bursaries which were introduced in 1988 and are now known as the Year 12 Awards. Anthi Chilianis and Kalypso Sofianos photographed when awarded Honorary Life membership of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society in 1995. They received the medals in recognition of their years of involvement and service to the Society. Anthi Chilianis migrated from Exoghi and arrived in 1921; and Kalypso migrated from Kioni and arrived in 1936. The photograph was published in the the 'Odysseus', the newsletter of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society.The Ithacan Philanthropic Society (IPS) was formed in 1916 to support the Ithacan Greeks who had settled in Melbourne. The Club was a focal point for those early migrants and over the years. It continues to support and connect Ithacans and their families who have grown up in Australia. The photograph was taken in the family home of Constantine and Toula Black (Mavrokefalos) in Parkville during the early 1920s on the christening day of their son John Black. John's sisters, six year of Nina Black and her four year old sister, Rita (Marguerita) are pictured. Also pictured from l-r: Argiro ? , who was from Adelaide; John (Panoyoti) Raftopoulos, Toula's brother; and Lily Sigalas, Greek school teacher. Lily was the sister of Alexandra Vrachna who taught two generations of Australian born Ithacan children in Greek community schools for close to 30 years.In adult life Nina Black also went on to teach Greek at the Greek Community school which opened in Melbourne in the early 1930s. Arthur and Aspasia (Sia) Koutsouvelis and Aspasia's mother, Ioulia Raftopoulos along with Helen and Andrew Yiannis, Arthur's sister and brother-in-law pictured outside the Evangelismos Orthodox Church in East Melbourne in 1956. Ioulia Raftopoulos nee Sicotis arrived in Australia from South Africa in 1926. She married George Raftopoulos, who migrated to Australia in 1908 from Frikes and was a founding member of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. He and his brother Arthur worked in the Spot Cafe in the 1940s and 1950s. George and Ioulia had two daughters, Effie and Aspasia (Sia). Family celebrations were a very important part of Ithacan social life especially weddings and baptisms. Dimitri (JIm) and Leah (nee Sikiotis) Kandiliotis ran the Trentwood Dry Cleaning business in Doncaster Road, North Balwyn. Jim was very active in the Ithacan Philanthropic Society; he was president from 1965-1966 and is an Honorary Life Member.Leah's parents Costa and Reene (nee Varvarigos) Sikiotis operated Pullars Dry Cleaning in Rathdowne Street Carlton in the 1950s.
