This book was awarded to William Kerr Paterson for English Subjects as first prize in the fifth form in 1894. William enrolled in Ballarat College in 1891 (D.O.B. 5/11/1876). In the original register it lists parent/guardian as John Paterson, contractor, residing at 12 Errard Street South. It also states that previous school was SS.33, [subsequently known as Dana Street P.S]. William's brother David McMurtrie enrolled in the college in 1886 at the age of 14.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown calf with college crest embossed on front cover. On 31 July 1948 a football match was played at the South Melbourne Cricket Ground between sides from Victoria and South Australia. The event was organized by the RSL Victorian Branch. The RSL Victorian Branch Football Association was originally formed in 1947 and was affiliated with the Victorian Football Union. The purpose of the Football Association was to provide organized football for Returned Servicemen. Tape measure cases were designed to house a tape measure to enable the measuring of distances, usually for a building project. This case would have been produced after 1877 when John Rabone and Sons were registered. This case probably had a cloth tape measure with inches marked on one side and sometimes they had poles marked on the other (1pole measured 198 inches, or 500cm). Hellfire Corner was a junction in the Ypres Salient in the First World War. The main supplies for the British Army in this sector passed along the road from Ypres to Menin - the famous Menin Road. A section of the road was where the Sint-Jan-Zillebeke road and the Ypres-Roulers railway line crossed the road. Hand operated Bellows vacuum cleaner. Previously #27 The “Baby Daisy” Vacuum Cleaner is constructed from timber, steel and leather bellows. It has a carry handle fixed to the top. The base is approx. 500mm x 250mm. The height is approx 400mm. On one side is a bracket for a handle (missing) used to operate the bellows. The device is mounted on a foot plate that is split. On one side of the bellows is a circular metal detachable hatch, fixed by wing-nuts. This has a central hole for a tube (missing). Attached internally to this hatch is a cloth dust collection bag. The metal hatch has the following moulded words arranged in a circular fashion. 'DAISY Vacuum Cleaner). There are two brass plates fixed to the side of the cleaner above the hatch. These plates are stamped with 'Rd. No. 518080 and Rd. No. 530353' Gold printed Labels on the side say the following. BABY DAISER Vacuum Cleaner. Registered England. Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. was a North American jewellery company that was established in 1949 by the Stuart family as part of Emmons Jewelry, Inc. It began operations in England and Australia in 1968, and in Australia it moved from Carlton in Melbourne to Wodonga in 1969. The premises were originally on High St. in Wodonga, but a new warehouse was built in Melbourne Rd. later in 1969. It was a direct selling jewellery business using a party-plan model similar to Tupperware and Avon. The sales reps or 'Hostesses' were provided with jewellery samples in demonstration kits, which they displayed at jewellery parties in their homes. The designs for jewellery such as brooches, necklaces, earrings, chokers and bracelets were purchased from freelance designers and jewellery manufacturers rather than in-house designers. In 1979 Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. in Wodonga was bought by three Australian businessmen, including Wodonga local Jim Sawyer, and continued to sell jewellery under the name "Sargem Pty. Ltd”, for several more years in the 1980s. As part of the Sarah Coventry collection, the pin has local significance with the decentralised commercial development of regional centres such as Wodonga in NE Victoria, as well as national and international significance from the perspective of social and economic developments for women after World War II. The direct selling party-plan business model Sarah Coventry was based on is also considered the first of its kind for jewellery.Small rectangular gold metal pin for five years service with a faceted pink stone inlay on the proper left side, the name and initials of Sarah Coventry in the central area and three flowers on the proper right side. Leo Wimmer who lived locally was commissioned to do the painting for the Mt Beauty, S. K. Pearce Pty. Ltd., Supermarket as a display was wanted to fit against the blank walls opposite the cash registers (where the liquor store is now). His idea was to break up the parts in the painting and use these as large replicas painted on wood for the display. An official opening was held and Leo used the money earned to visit his homeland, Austria. Leo trained as a restorer of church art in Austria.This painting was commissioned for a Cattlemen's display behind the cash registers at the Mt Beauty S. K. Pearce Supermarket. Each part of the foreground was painted separately onto stand alone boards -the cattle, the hut, the grass and the Mt Beauty township. Leo Wimmer lived locally and was a professional frame conservator. Leo Wimmer specialised in gilding and worked at the National Gallery of Victoria and later the National Gallery of Australia (NGA Nov. 1981 - 1990) where he was responsible for conservation of gilded frames in the national collection. This involved crafting of missing pieces on period frames, conservation/restoration of gilded surfaces, crafting of period frames, and lecturing at galleries and institutions on gilding, wood carving, Australian frame history and crafting of period frames. The P.S Nellie was 79.8 feet in length and 20.4 feet in breadth, and depth of 4.6 feet. It weighed 58 tons net and 66 tons gross. It was made of wood and had a capacity of 10 H.P. It was built at Moama in 1882 and was registered in Adelaide in 1882. Its registration number was No. 83,672. The P.S Nellie was owned by the River Murray N. Co. This photograph was taken in 1900. It looks like the P.S Nellie was a passenger paddle steamer, taking passengers up and down the rivers.Not much is known about the P.S. The first church services were held at the McHaffie home in Ventnor once a fornight, the Preacher coming over in a whaleboat from the mainland. Land was reserved for the Church in 1869 and the first services were held in the new church in 1870. The Parish Hall was built in 1935. The Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was registered in Bendigo on 18/06/1981.The decision to disband the Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was made at a General Meeting on 17/02/2016. The group agreed to continue as the Merle Bush Friendship Group. The Australian Trefoil Guilds connect women who are either actively involved in Girl Guiding or have a history with Girl Guiding. The purpose of a Trefoil Guild is to keep alive the spirit of the Promise and Law, carry this spirit into the community and to give support Guiding.Dark blue vinyl covered four ring binder containing a Friendship Book for the Merle Bush Trefoil Guild.
