A commemorative photo from the voyage back to Australia aboard the ship The Ceramic in 1920. It departed Tillbury, UK 12th March and docked in Freemantle on 27th April 1920 and then went onto Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. The Ceramic was a transport vessel built in Belfast in 1913 for the White Star Line to transport frozen produce and apples from Australia to UK. It was taken over by the Australian Government for troop transport in October 1914 and could carry over 3,000 troops. This trip in 1920 there were 1467 on board, there were women and children as well as 439 soldiers returning home, one of whom was John 'Basil' McLean. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. 01193.1 shows school children with wreaths approaching the Shrine. 01193.2 is a group of school girls with wreaths sitting on the steps. 01193.3 is the procession of school children up the steps to lay their wreaths in the Inner Shrine. These are photos of a Melbourne Legacy charity concert, which is possibly it is the concert in September 1985. Photos of singers and performers during the concert also guests and some performers afterwards. According to a programme stored at 00056, 'A Legacy Night to Remember' concert was at Melbourne Concert Hall, some of the performers were Barry Crocker, Simon Gallaher, Rolf Harris, Anne & Johnny Hawker's Band, Colleen Hewett, Jackie Love, Paul Martelle, 3rd Military District 'Redcoats'. Special guest compere - Daryl Somers. Three photos of a function held at Legacy House to celebrate the 80th birthday of Miss Enez Domec Carre. Enez was the instructor for the girls' classes for many years, she organised many annual demonstrations and was held in high regard by Legacy. The library at Legacy House is named in her honour. See also a newspaper article at 00978 which outlines her achievements, a summary of her career at 00458 and 00129. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy as assistant to Mrs Gilles (wife of a Legatee) later became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes in Windsor, Elsternwick, Gardenvale and Geelong. She also held a position on the Board of Studies and as director of physical education in Catholic Schools. Recognition of her work included being awarded an MBE in 1971. And in 1997 she received Legacy's highest award, the title of Guest of Honour, for her years of service. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991. Part of a photo album (Cat.No. 01588) of material about the life of Legatee Donovan Joynt. This photo shows Donovan Joynt and Queen Elizabeth II reading from a pamphlet he is holding. This is a larger copy of the photograph Cat. No. 01590.1, and records the date of when it was taken as 17 March 1977. Queen Elizabeth visited Melbourne as part of her Silver Jubilee tour of Australia and attended a children's rally in Royal Park wearing this outfit. A crowd of 18,000 people greeted her. Footage of the visit can be seen in National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NSFA-ID 44325). There is no indication of who the veteran on the right was. He is a VC winner and has medals from the second world war. A note on the reverse page mentions a photo in the album of Captain M. Moon V.C with Sir Alfred Kemsley and Colonel Joynt. It was removed by Legatee K.D. He participated in many events to promote Legacy, including a parachute jump with Ron Barassi, a car raffle, lunches and comparing a night to remember (see 00853, 00854, 00997, 00056). The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Legatee Donovan Joynt at the opening of the Puckapunyal Sportsman's club that was named after him. The notes, dated March 1983, could have been for a newspaper article. "IT'S A HELPING HAND... for one of Australia's most distinguished soldiers outside his own memorial at Puckapunyal. Sapper Mark Drummond of Seymour, a member of 21st Construction Squadron, which built the Memorial, holds an umbrella and commander 3rd Military District, Brigadier Geoff Cohen of Canterbury, wheels Lieutenant Colonel Donovan Joynt VC to lunch. Lt Col Joynt, 94, donated more than half the cost of the $130,000 Donovan Joynt VC Memorial Sportsman's Club in the background. During that time Ray Ward was President of the Perth Legacy. (Ray would later move to Melbourne and served term as President of Melbourne Legacy in 1996.) Two photos from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. One photo shows a reunion in 1959 featuring several past residents, their husbands and children. Faces have small numbers indicating their names which were recorded on the back: 1 Margaret Guy, 2 Greg Guy, 3 and 4 are their children. 5 Bab Thompson 6 his wife, 7 their child. 8 Alice Cameron and 9 her husband (Black) and their four children. 10 is Lois Clark (nee Fitzsimmons) and one child. 11 Doreen Ashworth and 12 is her husband (Closter) and their three children. The other photo shows two children of past residents. Names written on the page it was stuck on were 'Boy Guy' and 'Baby John Frost'. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. It is likely she compiled this notebook. Individual pages of photos or newspaper clippings have been added separately. Items 01817 to 01836. Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950) were residences run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Generally, Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. A photo from a book compiled about the Legacy children's residence called Stanhope. This photo shows Matron Dorrie Vines with three residents. Names around the photo L to R: Lee Henneberry, Doreen Devlin, and Betty Henderson. The newspaper article from The Age was published on 28 August 1959 and mentions Miss Vines has worked at Stanhope since 1946 when she returned from war service. She had been a trained nurse and served in Middle East and New Guinea with the RAANC. She had been awarded the medal of an Associate of the Royal Red Cross and was mentioned in despatches. Mention of the routine of the house include that the girls sleep in large airy bedrooms which they look after themselves. They generally do their own washing and ironing. There is a well equiped sewing room where they can make their own clothes. There is a radio and television and piano though between 7 and 9pm is quiet study time. A legacy member joins them for dinner most evenings and the girls do their own washing up. They can cook in the kitchen if they wish. There is staff of an assistant matron, a cook and two housemaids. Girls have picnics and outings arranged and three or four times a year and they have informal dances at Stanhope. Stanhope was supervised by Matron Dorothy (Dorrie) Vines from the time it opened in 1946 until she retired in December 1966. Copies of photos of the No 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital set up in the ground of Harefield Park during the first World War. They were wooden huts. Also the graves of the deceased soldiers in the Australian Military Cemetery in 1919 in Harefield's St Mary's churchyard. Plus two photos of the Mansion at Harefield one in 1917 and one from 1927. Harefield Park was owned by Australian couple, Letitia Billyard-Leake (born Letitia Leake) and her husband Charles Billyard and their 4 children. The family donated their property, Harefield Park, to the Australian Government for use as an Australian-run hospital. The family moved off the property and lived nearby to help run the hospital. Letitia and her daughter, also named Letitia, ran the canteen while Charles Billyard organised activities and was a hospital board member. (from research from Carol Grbich and John Berger). During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. Photograph of Lynne Scott and her five children to promote Legacy week. The newspaper cutting says that her husband Colin Scott died in 1985, he had served in the Vietnam War as a reconnaissance pilot. One of his children, Chris, has become a Brisbane Bears footballer. The family were interviewed and said how Legacy had been very good to their family. Lynne Scott says "The most important thing for us was knowing there was someone we could call on if we needed and that the children were being looked after". The Scott family were featured on the 1994 poster for Legacy Week. 1994 was the year of the family and it was fitting that a family was chosen to promote Legacy. It was part of the RAAF 70th Anniversary "Legs for Legacy" run down the eastern coast of Australia with the money going to Legacy. Melbourne Legacy received a portion of the funds raised. Ron Barassi was a Legacy boy after his father died at Tobruk in 1941. He helped promote Legacy in many ways and at many events over many years. The photo shows Ron Barassi participating in a tug of war event in Melbourne City Square and another participant is in army uniform. It was featured on the cover of The Answer September 1992, saying it was Legacy Week. Commissioned in 1942 he was appointed Adjuntant (Supply and Transport ) HQ, 3 Australian Corps. He initially joined Fremantle Legacy in 1952 and was it's president in 1958. Four Legacy widows enjoying themselves at a widow function as they join in a sing-along around a piano. It was the 'Great Tea Party' in June 1992 when the widows rooms were opened after 9 months of renovations. The pianist is Jean Davies and at the rear right is Vera Paydon (of the Homes and Hospital Visiting Group) and the other names are unknown. Keesing Photographers took a series of photos on the same day of various ladies (Ref no 929609). Pg 11 meant the photo was used in an issue of The Answer - 31st July 1992. A widows' function, that involved a raffle, (some of the same ladies are in 00654 and 00655). The lady drawing the raffle is Inez Bruce / President, and the lady holding the prize may be Joan Miller. The photo was featured in the July 1992 Widows Newsletter and explains the day was the 'Great Tea Party' in June 1992 when the widows rooms were opened after 9 months of renovations. Cakes were donated by Fergusson Plarre. In the 1990s Legacy was supported by generous donations from Fergusson Plarre Bakehouse with cakes often donated for events and the annual fete. According to the paper label "Expatriate Clive James was named the 1993 Legacy Personality of the Year at a special function conducted by Melbourne Legacy. Clive entertained over 500 guests with a personal address of his time as a young Legacy boy. Clive will be seen later in the year as part of Legacy's Annual Badge Appeal." It was a "Breakfast with Clive James" at the Regent Hotel in February 1993, and Australian author Patsy Adam-Smith and Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop were also guests. (See also 00751 and 00753).
