This photograph frame with its decorative floral and Greek patterned boarder was typical of the early 1900's when photography was in the hands of the professional artist. It was in a period before the "instant" photo and required a dark room and processing liquids for development. It was therefor in a time when photographs were "shot" only at important events be they family or public occasions.This photograph frame holds and protects, part of a very significant occasion, the 90th birthday photograph of the matriarch of one of the founding families within the Kiewa Valley. The frame therefore has historical significance.This gold painted aluminium photograph frame has a glass (broken) pane within a formed inlay and two swivel clip toggles. These are installed to allow the photograph to be securely positioned within the correct alignment of the the frame.The metal front plate has seven rivets holding the cloth covered cardboard back frame to the metal front cover. The front part of the frame has sculptured wild flowers and is boarded with a Greek "key" pattern. Half way on the back panel is a rectangular swiveled stabiliser flap. Maurice Miles served in the Australian Army in World War Two and was present at Cowra when the Japanese POW breakout occurred. He joined Citizien Military Forces in 1965, serving with 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles till 1985. ELTHAM POLICE QUARTERS & REAR STABLE (FORMER), is listed on the Victorian Heritage Database. The stables are described: "The original single stall brick stables building with loft, built in 1859-60.."These horseshoes were dug up by the owners of the property adjoining the former Eltham Police Station and Court House site behind the stables when working in their garden. Presumably they were discarded adjacent to the stables where the Police horses were kept and over time became covered with soil and other material. These badges feature an image of the British nurse Edith Cavell. She was shot by a German firing squad in 1915 for assisting Allied soldiers to escape from Belgium. The bullock team was part of a parade held on the main street of Halls Gap in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of Major Mitchell's visit to the area. There was also a plaque unveiled in commemoration of the Wildflower Show and its many volunteers.The photo is taken from the rear of a bullock team pulling a dray down a road. Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. A black and white photograph of Private Dave Henderson, a wounded forward scout from 8 RAR, as he contemplates the rolling surf at the Back Beach, near the 1st Australian Hospital, Vung Tau, South Vietnam. Red Cross conducted daily trips to the beach.
