Domestic object - Education, Braille playing cards, 20thC
Braille is a system of touch reading and writing for blind persons in which raised dots represent the letters of the alphabet Braille is read by moving the hand or hands from left to right along each line. Residents of Moorabbin Shire used these cards at social gatherings. In the early 1800s Charles Barbier, who served in Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army, developed a unique system known as “night writing” so soldiers could communicate safely - without lamps- during the night. Louis Braille, born Coupvray, France 1809 lost his sight at a very young age, 1819 he was enrolled at the National Institute of the Blind in Paris.and began to modify Charles Barbier’s “night writing” code in an effort to create an efficient written communication system for fellow blind individuals. . He spent the better part of the next nine years developing and refining the system of raised dots that has come to be known by his name, Braille. The code was now based on cells with only 6-dots instead of 12 ..Braille died in 1852 but his code spread around the world France 1854, USA 1860 , and blind individuals from all over the world benefit from Braille’s work daily. Today, braille code is transcribed in many different languages worldwide.Blind individuals from all over the world benefit from Braille’s work daily and these cards were used by residents of Moorabbin ShireCardboard pack of ordinary playing cards with braille imprints left top of each card. Functional object - Silver Card Case (Holmes), Mid 20th century
The owner of this card case was Dr Horace Holmes who was a doctor in Warrnambool for over 40 years. Dr Holmes (1877-1959) was born in Tasmania and completed a medical course at Melbourne University. He came to Warrnambool in 1905, taking over the practice of Dr Fleetwood at ‘Ierne’, at the corner of Spence and Kepler Streets. In 1906 he built a new home at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and moved his practice there in 1912 (today this building is the Warrnambool Medical Clinic). Dr Holmes was an honorary Medical Officer at the Warrnambool Hospital. He retired in 1939 selling his practice to Dr Berryman but came out of retirement and practised as a locum until 1944. His interests included rowing golf, bowls and fishing. In the 1950s he lived at ‘Leprena’ in Canterbury Road. He was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Rotary Club. This is a most significant item as it belonged to a prominent local doctor, Dr Horace Holmes. It also has considerable social significance as it is an example of the practice of past times of carrying calling cards and the silver case is a sign of the affluence of the owner. This is a silver card case, heavily embossed, with a slightly curved shape and a hinged lid. It has the initials ‘HIH’ engraved in a shield on the front of the case. It contains nine calling cards (Dr Horace Holmes, Warrnambool). These are made of light card with printing in black on a white background. The cards are somewhat marked and discoloured. WWII Identity Cards, 1941 saw the introduction of Identity Cards
When the German Government imposed ID cards on the Dutch population they employed the collaborator and expert designer Jacob Lentz who claimed they were impossible to forge. The Jewish ones showed a black J on both front and back. However, a Jewish woman living in the Netherlands, Alice Cohn, did learn how to replicate them and thus saved numerous Jewish lives. These items are significant insofar as all Dutch citizens over the age of 15 were obliged to carry ID on their persons at all times.Proof of Identity cards issued by the Dutch Government under orders of the German occupying forces. Inside each folder are the owner's full name; DOB; address; occupation; fingerprints and Date of Issue.a) Photograph and signature of male - J.W.W. v. Alphen. Visiting Cards, 1930s?
These items came from the estate of the Misses Ardlie, (Dorothy and Agnes). They are visiting cards for their father and themselves. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. Visiting cards were used for business purposes or when making formal calls to other families. These cards show two residences of Dorothy and Agnes – Aroona, 19 Princess Street and Little Wyton at 3 Nelson Street. Wyton was the name of one of Captain John Ardlie’s ships. The fact that the Misses Ardlie had visiting cards are an indication that they were two of the more affluent and high profile members of Warrnambool society in the 20th century. These cards are of interest, firstly as an example of a visiting card used in the early to mid 20th century and secondly as mementoes of the Ardlie family of Aroona, Warrnambool. .1 These are 9 identical white visiting cards for Agnes Ardlie. The cards are rectangular in shape and have black cursive printing. .2 These are 2 white visiting cards for Miss Ardlie. They are rectangular in shape and have black cursive printing and alterations in blue ink handwriting. .3 These are 5 white visiting cards for Arthur Ardlie. One card is very discoloured. The cards are rectangular in shape and have black cursive printing and alterations in blue ink handwriting on two of them. ardlie family,, warrnambool, warrnambool lawyer, -
