Part of a collection of goldfield artifacts recovered from the Ovens Goldfield, including the Buckland Valley. The collection also included a large amount of Chinese pottery and artifacts also goldfields bottles, jars and mining implements. Collected by Aldo Gios late resident of Myrtleford. The Bright & District Historical Society purchased the collection of Chinese artifacts in 2010, included in the collection were other items of interest including this pipe and others similar.Relevant to the goldmining history of the areaPipe made of clay and embossed on both sides of the bowl. Damaged, attempt to reattach section of stem, a piece of the stem missing. Embossing,one side resembles a wattle branch, other side represents a harp. Lettering on both sides, worn and hard to read. Diggers & Mining. Gold. Chinese on the goldfeild. Some Chinese came as independent gold seekers; but the emigration of many was due to the enterprise of Chinese merchants, who sent them out under contract to work on the goldfields for a certain time at a fixed wage. Those who came under these conditions were under the supervision of ''head men'', representing the Chinese speculators by whom the funds for the voyage were advanced. Markings: 9 994.GOL. Diggers and miners. Diggers and Miners. All or the gold seekers at the first great rushes to Ballarat and Mount Alexander were diggers. During the succeeding years of the gold rush decade, many goldfields were discovered; each became the focus of a rush, and the scene of a diggings. The following maps show only the principal gold fields rushed between 1851 and 1961. (The dates do not necessarily indicate the first discovery of gold in the areas.) Markings: 10 994.5 WAL. Diggers & Mining: The Digging - The Diggers. Slide; When a Gold field shows signs of permanency, the Government surveyed a site for a township on the field. The story of the rise of these towns is told in Unit II of this series. Smalll businesses - some of them conducted by diggers who had done well on the fields - were established in these towns. Many of the goldfields police were men of poor character, who carried out their duties with blustering arrogance, demanding the production of the licence with threatening language, and sometimes open violence; and hauling off as common criminals men who, by some mischance, did not have their licences on their persons, when, given a few minutes, they could have shown they had complied with the law. Slide: On the more important goldfields, as the number of diggers grew, the Commissioners' establishments were increased, and permanent buildings were erected at their headquarters. The group of tents and buildings forming a Commissioner's headquarters became known as the Government Camp. The Camp included the office of the Commissioner, the licence office, the escort office, the lock-up, staff quarters, and the barracks of the police and any soldiers attached to the Camp.
