... goldfields ...Brought to the Ovens Goldfields by Chinese men working in the area in the 19th century. Most likely made in China.Aldo Gios recorded the location of where most of the pieces in this collection were found. Some maps drawn by Aldo Gios also give more detail. This detail is rare, as most pieces of broken crockery were discarded and complete items were usually collected with no thought to recording the location they came from. Part of one of the largest collections of Chinese ware found in the Upper Ovens area and the only one recording the location where found.Porcelain food dish, glazed, Chinese. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING: THE DIGGINGS - THE DIGGERS
... goldfields ...Diggers & Mining: The Digging - The Diggers. Slide reads: We must remember that each of the important goldfields on the 'fifties' consisted of several diggings. Along many creeks, gullies, flats and - later- shallow leads in the area, men found gold. Between the many diggings established on the sites of these discoveries, the diggers, acting on reports of the latest ''lucky strike'', were constantly moving. Markings: 8 994.LIF:6. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. GOLD, c1850s
... goldfields ...Diggers & Mining. Gold. The Chinese soon became very unpopular with the white diggers on the goldfields. (1) Much of the hostility to them was the result of sheer prejudice directed against people who were alien in race, religion, and language; whose standard of living, by European criteria, was low; and who did not mix with other diggers, but lived - preforce - in separate camps in the diggings. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. CHINESE ON THE GOLDFEILD, c1850s
... goldfields ...Diggers & Mining. Gold. Chinese on the goldfeild. Some Chinese came as independent gold seekers; but the emigration of many was due to the enterprise of Chinese merchants, who sent them out under contract to work on the goldfields for a certain time at a fixed wage. Those who came under these conditions were under the supervision of ''head men'', representing the Chinese speculators by whom the funds for the voyage were advanced. Markings: 9 994.GOL.
