Norman Thomas Henshaw operated a tailor's business in High Street, Wodonga for several years. He was born in Albury in 1891, the sone of WIlliam Henshaw and Ellen nee Goldsworthy. At various times, Norman operated a tailor business in Albury, Rutherglen, Beechworth and Wodonga. His business in High Street, Wodonga was advertised as being located opposite the Fire Brigade Hall. Mr. Henshaw died 10 September 1966 and his wife Agnes died on 30 July 1999, aged 107. They are buried in the Waugh Rd. cemetery in Albury, NSWThis item has local significance as it represents business which operated in Wodonga in the 1920s. The ledger is part of the 'Mann' collection and was used for accounting records in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in Wodonga from July 1930 to January 1932. It is one of three bound ledgers from the J. Mann & Sons General Store and the other two date from 1932-1933 and 1933-1934. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006. The ledger has local significance due to its use in the J. This image is representative of many photographs illustrating the level crossing in the centre of Wodonga. Since its opening in 1873 the railway line had crossed High Street, originally called Sydney Road. It bisected the city with level crossing gates frequently stopping the flow of traffic and pedestrians as trains passed through. Signal Box B stood on the eastern side of the High Street level crossing and a big wheel closed and opened the gates. On 17th September, 1961, it was replaced by boom gates and flashing lights. The railway crossing was removed from High Street as part of the Wodonga Rail Bypass project. This involved a 5.5 kilometres bypass, the elimination of 11 level crossings and the relocation of the Wodonga station. It was moved from its original central location to a position on a new line on the northern edge of the town. The old station closed on 8 November 2008 and the new station opened on 25 June 2011.This image has local and statewide significance as it captures the former crossing in a major railway system. He later returned to his Wodonga pharmacy where although semi-retired John continued to go to work each day up to his 90th birthday. Arthur Dunstan Hardware Arthur Dunstan established mills at Red Bluff on the Mitta and a timber yard at Wodonga. He also built a sawmill at Glen Wills in 1931 which operated for about 16 years. A larger and more modern sawmill with drying kilns was erected at Eskdale in 1947. He was contracted to build Wodonga’s Municipal sale yards in 1935, followed by the Wangaratta sale yards. This created so many forward orders that he bought a large block of land on the corner of Beechworth and Tallangatta Roads and opened a timber mill and hardware store. The business stood on this corner for about 40 years. A large proportion of the company's timber output was processed at the Wodonga yards into flooring, weatherboards, mouldings etc. and practically the whole output was distributed locally and throughout the Riverina and eastern areas of New South Wales, and Canberra. At its peak Dunstan’s was one of the biggest sawmilling businesses in Victoria and in Wodonga employed 150 people and milled l6,000,000 super feet of timber annually. A super foot is a measurement for timber, equal to one foot square by one inch thick. Arthur Dunstan also built Tower Place in High Street. He died in Wodonga in 1963 and the business was continued on by his sons. In 1906 Patrick Mylon started a passenger transport service in the Albury-Wodonga border area with horses and cabs. His son Jack went into business in the late 1920s, and his grandson Bernie joined the firm early in 1970. When Patrick started with the horses and cabs, each cab carried eight passengers and he always had two horses per cab. As the business expanded, Mylons used a range of buses and coaches including Reo, Chev and Bedford vehicles. During more than 100 years if service to the Wodonga region and beyond, Mylon Motorways received many awards for Excellence and tourism. On July 2, 2008 the company, including its 31 buses and 45 staff members were transferred to the Dyson Group. Over the years it has occupied premises at 3 different locations in High Street. Tooles Disposals, formerly Tooles Motors was established in 1939. It was taken over from William Dobbie, Automotive Engineer who set up his business on this site about 1929. It was opened by Pat Toole and later taken over by his son Bill. The Disposals part of the business was expanded in 1963 and eventually took over the entire building. The central Wodonga building was sold in 2011 and Bill and his wife Debbie moved the stock to their warehouse in Bandiana. They operated from Bandiana while also focusing on online selling. McHarg's Solicitors was established in 1932 when John Charles (Jack) McKenzie-McHarg opened his legal practice in High Street, Wodonga in the Belvoir Chambers. There was also a dentist Mr. N. The One Way sign was for drivers coming from Stanley Street. Parking meters were introduced in High Street in 1977 and remained until 1996. Arch Sloman was the first Manager. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and employed over 100 people. This site has since been redeveloped and is now the Mann Centre.
