The Photograph shows Ballarat tram No. 14 with the destination of Lydiard St North most likely in Albert St Sebastopol during the 1930s or 1940s. The tram was in the livery shown from August 1936 until Dec. 1950. Professor Ernest Edgar Kurth of the University of Tasmania, invented a faster, simpler and cleaner way to produce charcoal on a continuous basis during the second world war. The charcoal was used to produce a combustible gas in motor cars, as a substitute for petrol, which was heavily rationed. The first batch of charcoal was produced in February 1942 and continued until the end of the war. Wood from stringybark trees was cut into lengths and fed into a kiln which converted it into charcoal. The Kiln is located on Beenak Road, 7km north of Gembrook. It has great historical significance, particularly as an alternative supplier of fuel during the second world war. It is a State Registered facility, managed by the Friends of Kirth Kiln and the park is managed by Parks Victoria Green soft covered book of 150 pages, with a photo of 2 men and a boy out in the bush with 3 fires burning.Contains a Prelude about Ernest Edgar Kurth written by Alfred Klink (2013) and a Foreward by John Sullivan (Heritage Officer of Parks Victoria). These lamps belonged to Ernie Eaton and were used for spotlighting rabbits. Carbide lamps, or acetylene gas lamps, are simple lamps that produce and burn acetylene (C2H2) which is created by the reaction of calcium carbide (CaC2) with water. Acetylene gas lamps were used to illuminate buildings, as lighthouse beacons, and as headlights on motor-cars and bicycles. Portable acetylene gas lamps, worn on the hat or carried by hand, were widely used in mining in the early twentieth century. They are still employed by cavers, hunters, and cataphiles Torches, candles, oil lamps and kerosene lamps were designed to be carried around but they could be dangerous because they have flame as a source of light. These lanterns are significant examples of lighting devices widely used used before the use of battery powered devices. A pair of Germania lamps. Harcourt was admitted to the Bendigo District Cricket association in 1924. Formed from a small community it was said “ everyone played cricket in Harcourt” Most of the players lived on fruit orchards, owned the status symbol of the time – a motor car- and were widely regarded as people of substance. He invented 23 different types of telephone, a proto-type helicopter, the world's first portable wireless radio, a colour-printing process and a carbon-filament light built just 16 days after Edison. Sutton built and drove the first motor car in Australia and conceived and built what is thought to be the world's first four-wheel drive.
