The Stawell Post office, an impressive building by any standards. It was built in 1875. The office of The Sentinel or Wodonga and Towong Sentinel newspaper was in High Street, Wodonga. The Sentinel began operation in 1885 and was owned, managed and edited by James Ryan. It was published weekly until he was killed by a train at Wodonga station on 27 July 1912. James Ryan was born in Beechworth in 1861 and served his apprenticeship with the printing business of the "Ovens and Murray Advertiser”. For a time, he worked on the Melbourne "Herald”, followed by the Ballarat “Courier”. With a fellow printer, William Oldfield Taylor, he moved to Wodonga and they began the "Wodonga and Towong Sentinel" with the first issue on 29th August 1885. Mr Taylor died in June 1894. After James Ryan’s death the “Sentinel” was continued by his son Charlie until his death 26 February 1965. It was sold to the Border Morning Mail in 1965. The first Post Mistress and Storekeeper was Catherine Peacock. The Building was located at259 Canterbury Road and was demolished in1950. A copy of the earliest known photograph of the former Kew Post Office on the corner of Cotham Road and High Street, Kew. The Post Office was opened in 1888. The original architectural drawings are held at the Public Record Office Victoria.The photograph is significant as the earliest known image of this Heritage Victoria designated historic building.The Kew Post Office on the corner of High Street and Cotham Road, Kew. The photograph includes the Queen Victoria Jubilee fountain at left. The image predates the large fig tree planted on the corner and the later Kew War Memorial (1925). What are presumed to be government employees stand beside the horse and buggy.

Stawell Post Office on corner of Wimmera and Main Streets. Erected 1875. Telegraph pole and streetlamp in foreground. Akins store visible at right of photo. The building has 3 arched doors & 6 arched windows on the ground floor and 8 square windows on the top story. Two chimneys on the roof and a wrought iron square fence on the roof. The outside of the building has not changed while the interior has been remodelled several times. The early Postmasters and their families lived upstairs. The main room originally included the Telegraph office where operators worked at machines, sending and receiving Morse code messages. Later alterations were made for a telephone switchboard room downstairs, with trunk line equipment upstairs. These four pages list the Office Bearers and Committees of Melbourne Legacy in 1942. This is a record of Legatees involved in the first 20 years of Legacy. Some very notable names that were key in establishing Legacy, including Sir Stan Savige. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1940-50s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1940-50s. Legatee Cyril Smith and others were detailing their experiences and knowledge for the future. This is a record of Legatees involved in the first 20 years of Legacy.
