Cheevers Dear Madam, I am pleased to say to you and the Councillors of the City of Ringwood that our family residence on both sides of my family exceeds in excess of one hundred years and it was during a family get together that an interesting anecdote was revealed relating to the land occupied by the Ringwood Bowling Club soon to occupy new premises in Warrandyte Road. The land that became the home of the Bowling Green was given by Thomas Grant, the previous owner was Captain Miles, father of the long standing Councillor the late Temple Miles. The incident I refer to was during World War 1 when Captain Miles an English Loyalist publicly stated he would give a block of land to the widow of the first Ringwood man killed in action. That man was James Brain (refer to Clock Tower Memorial) who married my father’s wife’s sister. Captain Miles made good his offer and the land was the land still occupied by the Ringwood Bowling Club. The land at that time had a small creek running through the centre and the young War Widow suffering grief was advised by another snide councillor (no name) not to accept it, saying it would not be worth it. Ringwoods’ first casualty during World War 1 left a widow and two young sons, all who have passed to their eternal reward. I still do not know if the Council has an historian, but thought it worth telling even if only the Bowling Club were to learn and proud to say my brother Jack had become club Champion on Sacred Soil. The little boy's father worked for a gold mining company in Malaya. The boy and his mother made it out of Malaya to Bendigo safely. The father volunteered by joining the 4th Pahang Bn of the Federated States of Malaya, serial no 13428 and his rank was Sgt. He was a POW, worked on the Burma railway. The father, Desmond Vandergrift Giblin survived the War. Desmond Vandergrift Giblin has letters and his diary on the Aust War Memorial website.This is a pocket sized memo book. Maxwell Barry Cowden VX19297 enlisted in the 2/nd AIF on 30.5.1940 age 18 years (put his age up to 21) in 2/2 Pioneer Battalion AIF, embarked for the Middle East 8.4.1941, promoted L/Cpl 25.6.1941, promoted Cpl 29.10.1941, took part in the Syrian Campaign. On 31.1.1942 the unit embarked for Australian but were diverted to Java to defend it, disembarked 18.2.1942. Java surrendered and they were taken POW, reported MIA on 30.4.1942 then after as POW. As a POW he worked on the Burma Railway. In December 1944 they were on the Hell Ship AWA Maru and sailed for Japan to work in the Coal Mines arriving mid Jan 1945. He was repatriated back to Australia on the HMS Formidable, discharged on 28.11.1945 with the rank of Cpl. The spoon was given to Maxwell Barry Cowden VX19297 2/2 Pioneer BN by an American POW. He carried the spoon tied to the side of his loin cloth. Max worked on the Burma Railway and in the Coal Mines in Japan, Senryu 24 and Fukuoka camps. After the war he could not sit on a chair for a long time and would just squat on the floor with his back to the wall as he had done as a POW. These are samples of the material used at the Fletcher Jones Factory in Warrnambool to make garments for men (suits, trousers, shorts) and women (suits, slacks, skirts, shorts). Fletcher Jones Clothing Factory was a key industry in Warrnambool from 1948 to its closure in 2005. The business was founded by David Fletcher Jones (1897-1977), a clothing manufacturer and retailer who worked as a hawker in the Western District following service with the A.I.F. in World War One. In 1924 Fletcher Jones opened three shops in Liebig Street selling men’s wear, hosiery and linen and operating a small tailoring business. He moved his shop to another location in Liebig Street and began to concentrate on men’s trousers production. In 1946 he opened a shop in Collins Street in Melbourne and eventually had stores and factories all over Australia. In Warrnambool he opened his factory at Pleasant Hill in Flaxman Street in 1948 and became a major Warrnambool employer, with over 1000 employees at one time. He transformed his business into a co-operative, with the name, ‘Fletcher Jones and Staff’ registered in 1947. The business diversified into other ranges of clothing for men and women but failed to compete with cheaper overseas clothing imports and the factory and shops were closed in the early 21st century. These pieces of material are of some interest as examples of the materials used in one of the most important businesses in Warrnambool and one that was of national significance for many decades. The Fletcher Jones label was well-known throughout Australia and Fletcher Jones himself was a prominent person in Warrnambool’s history, not only for his business interests but also for his philanthropy, his advocacy of business co-operatives and his support for many Warrnambool institutions. The Fletcher Jones Factory Gardens are still today a feature of Warrnambool and a tourist attraction. These two packets contain samples of materials used at the Fletcher Jones factory in Warrnambool. One packet (VC000690.1) contains four pieces of woollen material, one grey striped, one grey weave, one navy and one green, red and white tartan. This is a novel written by Ethel Patricia Stonehouse under the name of Lindsay Russell. She was born in Nhill in 1883 and was educated at Charlton State School. From 1894 on she wrote verse and short stories and worked as a journalist in Melbourne. She published her first novel in Melbourne in 1912 and lived for a time in London where she met Dr John Scott whom she married in 1914. After the First World War she came to live at Mortlake and her novel writing ceased. Most of her novels are about women rebelling –against Catholicism, Calvinism, the English class system and the restraints of marriage. Her railings against the Catholic Church and the oppression of women caused her to be a controversial figure, especially in Mortlake, but she was a popular novelist with one of her books, ‘Smouldering Fires’, selling over 100,000 copies in Australia alone. She died in 1964. No details on the inscription or the recipient of the book, ‘Isie’ have been found. The name, ‘Glasgow’ suggests that the book at some stage was connected with the Glasgow family of Wangoom. They were important local dairy farmers and cheese makers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.This book is of great interest because it was written by an Australian woman and one who lived for many years in Mortlake, a town close to Warrnambool. The connection with the Glasgow family is also of interest. This is a hard cover book of 320 pages. The book has a dark blue cover with gold lettering on the front cover and spine and some gold scroll work on the front cover. The book has a Prologue and 22 chapters and contains advertisements at the front and the back of the book for other books published by Ward, Lock & Co. There is a black and white illustration at the front of the book with a piece of tissue paper covering it. The page at the front of the book that contains an inscription is detached. The inscription and another annotation are written in black ink. This book was given in 1943 by the Warrnambool Technical School to Joyce Goodall. Considering that World War Two was in progress at the time, the book was an expensive one to be given as a school prize. But the donor was Miss Florence Lake, the daughter of John and Annie Lake and the step-daughter of George Rolfe of Lyndoch, near the Hopkins River mouth. Miss Lake inherited the property and built the residence known as Lyndoch that is today part of the Lyndoch Aged Care Facility. Miss Lake was known for her philanthropy and community work in Warrnambool. John King’s name has been crossed out in the book as he was no longer Principal in 1943. He was the founding principal of Warrnambool Technical School in 1911 and remained there for 29 years. The Goodall family established Wanstead Farm in East Warrnambool in the 19th century and Joyce Goodall was descended from the Mortlake branch of that family.This book is of interest because of its association in 1943 with Joyce Goodall, Florence Lake and Warrnambool Technical School. This is a hard cover book of 472 pages. The cover is brown with gold lettering and the image of a lion on the front cover and a scroll pattern on the spine. The book has a preface, 41 chapters and an index. There are eight colour plates scattered throughout the text. The book plate on the first page is printed and pasted in and it has typed material added to it. Another inscription has been handwritten in pencil. There are also several notes and quotations handwritten in pencil on the back page. The SS Casino was a coastal trader of 450 tons gross, 160.4 feet in length, built at Dundee for the Newcastle and Hunter Steam Navigation Company. It had saloon accommodation for 35 people, fore-cabin 25 and carried 300 tons (425 tonnes) of cargo.The Casino called at Warrnambool on 30th May 1882 while on her delivery voyage and narrowly escaped being dragged ashore by gale force winds. While the ship was in Warrnambool the directors of the Belfast and Koroit Steam Navigation Company bought the ship. It was used as a coastal steamer solely on the west coast of Victoria run from 1882. On the morning of 10th July 1932 an attempt was made to berth the ship at Apollo Bay in heavy seas. Captain Middleton decided to take the ship out into the bay and wait until the seas abated, not realising that the anchor used to steady the ship as she was being manoeuvred had pierced her hull. The ship was put about and headed to the beach, but sank. The captain and four crew members were swept off the deck, and though one crew member was rescued, four drowned. The beaded picture was made by Mary Wickham, the grandmother of the donor. This item has significance linking a piece of handcraft and a local ship from the late 19th century.It has significant artistic value. This letter has been written from France in 1917 by Private Edwin Johnson Carter to his friend Mrs Maggie Craig. It gives details of events in his life at the time – in the trenches in World War One. Private Edwin Johnson was a farmer from Nullawarre who enlisted in 1916 and served in France. He was drowned when the mail boat R.M.S. Leinster was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Irish Sea in October 1918. Private Johnson was returning from a visit to Ireland while on leave. This is an original letter from World War One It was written by a soldier from Nullawarre and has a particular poignancy as he writes: “My work brings me in contact with all that hurts in war. I am somewhat calm to it now but if I am spared to return I fear it shall be my nightmare.” He did not return but we have this letter to remind us of the horrors men such as Private Carter endured. This is an envelope containing a letter of two pages sent by a soldier on active service in France in World War One. Both the envelope and the letter are buff-coloured. The envelope has an image of an Australian Military Forces Y.M.C.A. logo, a Post Office stamp and a Censor stamp. The address is handwritten in pencil. This book contains the story of the Australian Companies of the Imperial Camel Corps in the First World War. The authors are George and Edmee Langley. George Langley (1891-1972) was the principal of Warrnambool High School from 1924 to 1940. He and his wife Edmee were prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool during that time. George Langley served with distinction in both World Wars and rose to the rank of Brigadier in 1944. He intended writing the history of the Australian Camel Corps but died before he could complete the work. Edmee Langley, herself a talented journalist and writer, used her husband’s collection of letters, diaries and writings to publish Sand, Sweat and Camels.This book is of interest as it was written by George and Edmee Langley who were important Warrnambool residents in the 1920s and 30s. Extracts from Edmee’s memoirs of her time in Warrnambool are held by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This is a soft cover book of 188 pages. It has a brown cover with white and yellow lettering and, on the front cover, a colour image of several men riding camels. The back cover has blurbs on the two pieces of writing in the book. The book contains many black and white photographs. Junction (Lake Guy) Dam is a 'slab and buttress' type wall. A timber frame is built and then filled with concrete. The first batch of concrete was placed in September, 1940. By June, 1941 the buttresses were finished to a height safe from floods and in October of that year a flood of 2,800 cusecs occurred but with only slight damage to the installations. Industrial trouble caused some delays but there was also slow progress on the part of the contractor and the work was taken over by the S.E.C., terminating the contract. The dam was completed in March, 1944. A walkway was made through the dam wall. Lake Guy was named after Mr. L.T. Guy who was the Resident engineer, in charge of construction work and associated activities on the Kiewa Area from 1939 to November 1946Photos of the construction of the Junction Dam detail the harsh conditions faced by construction workers, building dams and villages to accommodate workers in the 1940s to the 1950s. Australia at this period in time, experienced a surge of population (influx of World War II refugees), which was the catalyst for developing and undergoing an enormous hydroelectricity program for the Alpine regions, both in Victoria and New South Wales. This program was initiated to supply electricity to the major southern Australian cities of Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. It was thought that these developments would reduce, if not eliminate, the requirement for coal driven power stations. During the 1950's, Mt Beauty's population was rapidly increasing due to the post war baby boom and because there was a young workforce moving into the area due to the opportunity available for work on the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Maternal Infant Welfare Centre Sisters conducted regular check-ups on babies to ensure they were feeding well, gaining weight and reaching appropriate milestones for their age.Infants and young children in the Kiewa Valley area continue to be monitored by the Maternal Health Nurses to ensure their healthy development. The Briggs family lived in Tawonga. Thomas assisted building the Tawonga to Bright road and drove cattle to the Bogong High Plains before marrying in 1887 and raising 7 children, 2 of whom, Ernest and Albert enlisted in WW1 in 1916. The box has a curved top and a round face at the front. The face is covered with clear glass protecting the black marks which measure pounds and ounces. The numbers face the outside of the circumference. A black metal pointer rotates from the centre. At the top of the box in the centre a metal rod protrudes with a rectangular steel base on top and 4 screws for the container to hold the baby.
