Alice Anderson was a pioneering Australian female motor mechanic. These are important primary sources as they date the location and dates of operation of her garages in Kew. They also interestingly list her rates and charges. The original owner, Kathleen Hall, of the business cards was a personal acquaintance of Alice Anderson and this provides added historical significance and provenance.Three business cards used by Alice Anderson in promoting her Kew garage. The reverse of each card lists the rates of hire. One of the earliest camps held for Junior Legatees, showing tents, charabancs and fashions of the day. Legatee Stan Savige had a property in the Balnarring area and some camps were held on his property. Names noted on the back of the photos include: Pat Hanna, Aaron Beattie, Stan Savige, Sandy Lowe, Bill Pearce, Lyn Rule, Donovan Joynt, Carl Carleton, George Collins, Bill Pearce, Rupert Hely, Norman Stafford. Some of these were founding legatees. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started in the early years of Legacy with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built in the 1930s. The first edition of this magazine was produced by associated elementary schools in the Omeo Shire. The magazine was published from 1920 to 1927 and 1963 to 1969. There was a special issue in 1985. In all issues there is writing by children from schools that have since closed down.This item reflects the changes in education in East Gippsland and is a useful comparison tool for literacy teaching. It also has historical articles for research.Two 28 pp magazines titled "The Gap". 2245.1 is the original issue and 2245.2 is a reprint. The cover is a pale blue colour with black print. In the centre is a drawing of a girl holding a school case on a country road. The magazine contains articles and b/w photographs related to the history of the Omeo Shire. James Brisbane Wilson (1865-1933) was a councillor at Berwick for 17 years, later a member of Cranbourne Council. It is assumed that the donor is amongst the students. The timing of the donation would have prohibited him providing identifying details. This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. Arthur was the only son of Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980), cab man, born in Surrey Hills, the son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. Fred married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920 so would have been 8 or 9 at the time this photo was taken. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived his whole life at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. Arthur had no relatives to distribute the material to. Used by donor in 'Blackburn - a picturesque history'. Dud Prior commenced his first business with ten gold sovereigns. He was born in Nicholson Street Nunawading in 1889 and in 1917 he opened his first shop in Blackburn near the roundabout. The constitution states that the object of the Society is to relieve the wants of the poor -especially women and children- by suppyling them with clothing ,boots, food, fuel and other necessaries. The members of the Society to be councillors wives and representatives of Religious organisations.The President shall be the Mayoress. the positions of Treasurer and Secretary shall be Honorary. Mrs. McCaskill , whose husband was a Councillor at that time was the first President, a position she held for many years. There were 32 Ladies Benevolent Societies in the metropolitan area at this time. By the early 2000s there only a few left and Ringwood was one of the last to close about 2008 when it was absorbed into the Citizen's Advice Bureau.
