The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 1960s
Taken in the 1960s, depicted are approximately twenty-nine male and female spectators at a school swimming carnival on Lake Sambell near the caravan park. Lake Sambell is a beautiful Victorian recreation lake and urban park with a unique history. It was created in the mid-1800s by the Rocky Mountain Mining company during the gold rush era and used as a mining site until the early 1900s, which brought Europeans into the area. It was turned into a reserve for residents in 1920 and is considered an icon of Beechworth as it represents the development of the community, human endeavour, and the spirit of the landscape. This photograph represents the post-gold rush era use of Lake Sambell as a recreational reserve. Swimming carnivals were held at the lake and considered a social event for the Beechworth community.Black and white reproduced rectangular photograph print on paper.Reverse: Community/ Swimming pool 1960s/ near the caravan park/ Lakes?lake swimming pool, lake swimming, beechworth carnival processions, carnival, #beechworth, beechworth 1960s, victoria -

Work on paper - Photocopy of newspaper cutting, "PENGU/ CHOK/ IN/ OIL" (meant to be : "Penguins choke in oil"
With the establishment of the large heavy industrial zone at Hastings in the late 1960s, which included the BP oil refinery using the Port of Hastings at the north-western arm of Western Port, a number of environmental problems predicted by both scientists and conservationists arose. The main shipping channel on the western arm of Western Port was dredged, causing suspended particles affecting seagrass beds. With inadequate regulation around discharge of bilge water within the bay, and oil spillage, oil pollution affecting both seabirds and coastal areas was not uncommon. This report of 40 penguins actually known to have been killed by an oil spill event was typical of reports at the time. The 2 men quoted – Vernon Johnson and Ken Pound – were well known conservationists. Vernon and his wife Nora owned the Kingston Gardens picnic and zoo business where they cared for many injured wildlife. Ken was a Phillip Island counsellor for a few years, and instrumental in the establishment of the Phillip Island conservation Society. He also contributed various documents and newspaper cuttings to this archive. This article is significant for being a record of an exact number of penguins found dead from oil spill pollution in Western Port. Also as a record of conservationists in the early years of community and environment movements both locally and in Australia. The article further gives evidence of linking tourism with wildlife.Photocopy of newspaper cutting. Black print with very dark black and white photo of Fairy (Little) Penguin. Photograph - Wodonga Poultry Suppliers, Late 1940s
Wodonga Poultry Suppliers was established in the late 1940s by Albert (Bert) Elkington in partnership with his father-in-law Artie Phillips and Aubrey Gilbert. From the beginning they had an eye on the export market. Artie (Arthur) Phillips sold Bert and Aubrey the land and became the third partner. In 1945 Aubrey and Bert each gained a repatriation loan and scored £500. They cleared the land, made the bricks by hand, built freezers and killing pens and started killing and selling to the local trade. By 1947 they had completed the first large freezer, packing room and killing sheds all to the specifications of the Department of Primary Industry. They gained an export licence and began exports to England under the brand name “Donga”. By 1950, 120,000 poultry and 50,000 pairs of rabbits annually left the Athol St, Wodonga premises for overseas markets. Unfortunately the business was adversely impacted by the English wharf strike, with large stock losses and changes to the English poultry trade. Wodonga Poultry Suppliers made changes to the plant to cater for meat export to the ready markets of England, Greece, the Persian Gulf and Japan. By the 1962, Wodonga Poultry Suppliers were exporting poultry, rabbits, hares, lamb, mutton, pie offal and quarter beef to the UK, mutton to Greece and veal sides to Bahrain. The business had outgrown the original works in Athol St and larger and improved facilities were needed. Donga Meats Pty Ltd was set up in October 1963. In 1967 Bert Elkington sold his share of the company to Consolidated Meat Holdings and came back for a time as a stock controller. He passed away in Wodonga in 1993. These images are significant because they document an early major export industry established in Wodonga, Victoria. Plan - Edwards Park improvements (Trugo Green), Port Melbourne, 1940s - 1950s
Although undated, this plan is probably from the late 1940s or early 1950s. Around this time Port Melbourne Council were looking to built a basketball court in Lagoon reserve, and shelters and a senior citizen's clubhouse in Edwards Park. PMHPS does to believe the basketball court shown in the plan was built but the Port Melbourne Senior Citizens and Trugo Club is at the location shown on the plan. A shelter is in a similar location to the one on the plan. A children's playground existed in that location shown in a photograph from the 1930s. The round flowerbed where the paths cross in the centre of the park in not in the 1930s photograph but is a current feature of Edwards Park.Plan drawing to scale, hand coloured, of proposed improvements to Edwards Park (Trugo Green), undated possibly late 1940s or early 1950s."City of Port Melbourne"built environment - recreational facilities, parks and gardens, sport - trugo, port melbourne trugo club, edwards park
