Keith Pither was born at Shepparton in 1914 and grew up on a farm. Attended Otira Methodist Home Mission Training College from 1936 and by 1939 was a probation minister at Burnie (Tas.). Enlisted in the army 1939 and served in the Middle East and Northern Australia. In 1943 he was ordained in the field as a chaplain and later served in New Guinea. Married Allison (Alison?) Brown in 1945 and they had four children, Brian, Rhonda, Andrew and Howard. Completed his studies at Melbourne University 1946. Frank joined the army in 1915 and served with the 1st Bn. On 20/7 /1916 he was hospitalised with Shell Shock and medically discharged unfit on 20/12/1916. He re-enlisted on 3/8/1917 and joined the 13th battalions and proceeded to France. In October 1918. On 15/4/1919 he was hospitalised for unknown illness and returned to Australia. In 1938 he joined the 59th Battalion (Militia). On 26/6/1940 he was taken on strength (V30012) and served with the 2/21 and 2/14 Training Bn’s. On 16/2/1945 he was seconded for special duties with Z Special Unit and performed duty outside Australia between 27/4 and 30/9/1945. On 3/5/1946 he was placed on the retirement list . He joined the RSL in 1916 and Wangaratta Sub-Branch in 1933. The Volunteer Air Observers Corps was an Australian air defence organisation of World War II.It was formed on 31 December 1941 to support the Royal Australian Air Force by sighting and observing aircraft over Australia.It swiftly established observation posts across Australia and provided information to the RAAF's regional air control posts. As the threat to Australia declined its role was expanded to include coast watching, assisting air traffic control and weather reporting. The corps was staffed by civilian volunteers and reached a peak strength of 24,000 personnel and 2,656 observation posts in 1944. After the end of the war the VAOC was reduced to a cadre in December 1945 and was disbanded on 10 April 1946. Other branches and sub-branches were established across Australia and a Federal Council was established in 1946. With the passing of the survivors of Tobruk, most branches have been wound up with the exception of the Victorian branch. Since 2012 the Rats of Tobruk Association Inc. has opened up affiliate membership to descendants and relatives of the original "Rats" in order to preserve their legacy.This item is part of a collection of items owned by Arthur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. Cudgewa Line -The Cudgewa railway line opened in stages between 1889 and 1921. The first section from Wodonga to Huon opened on 10 September 1889. It was extended to Bolga on 18 July 1890, Tallangatta on 24 July 1891, Shelley on 13 June 1916 (the highest station in Victoria), Beetomba on 10 April 1919 and Cudgewa on 5 May 1921. In 1919, the line was used to carry materials for the construction of Hume Weir, and three years later a spur line connecting Ebden to the weir was opened. In the 1960s, Cudgewa became the railhead of materials for the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The last passenger service from Wodonga to Tallangatta ran on 30 September 1961 The turntable and passenger platform at Cudgewa were abolished in 1976.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Historical Steam locomotive on journey to Cudgewa. A banker is railway locomotive that temporarily assists a train that requires additional power or traction to climb a gradient. K Class Locomotives - One of VR's most successful classes of loco they were built over a 24 year period. A general purpose, light lines loco the K class had a very long career in all sorts of service from branch line passenger and goods work to pilot and banker duties and roadside mainline service. The K class is credited with working virtually every line in the VR system and hauling almost every kind of train. The majority of the class lasted into the 60's. K 184 and K186 were built by the Victorian Railways' Newport Workshops in 1945 to the successful K-class 2-8-0 locomotive design for branch-line work. K184 entered service on 9 January 1946. K186 entered service on 19 March 1946. K184 was used on heritage services with Steamrail Victoria through the 1970s. It was withdrawn from service in 1980 and is stored at Newport Workshops. and is now used as a source of spare parts; other Steamrail K Class locomotives occasionally wear its number plates and headlight number boards. Victoria HOWLETT (b. 1945- ) Born London, United Kingdom Arrived Australia 1946 Victoria Howlett studied Ceramics at RMIT. She lectured at Prahran College for several years before travelling to Canada, The United States of America, Mexico, Africa and England. She began working as a potter full time in 1977, establishing a studio in Melbourne. In 1985 Victoria Howlett won the Stuart Devlin Award, Melbourne. She is a practicing artist in Apollo Bay, Victoria. The ceramic work of Victoria Howlett draws on the Oribe tradition of painted surface designs. During the 1980s, she moved from rounded vessels and lidded jars to the platter as the form to be decorated, using a well-charged brush and slips coloured with oxide. Wheel thrown stoneware jar with dipped and painted glaze decoration. The ceramic works of Victoria Howlett are impressed 'TOR' or painted or incised 'Victoria Howlett'. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. They bought works from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught there. Timber was required for construction of McKay Creek Power Station which began construction in 1951 and also the camps and houses for the workers and their families. There was a need for housing and infrastructure for an increasing population of workers for the hydro-electric scheme as there was a general shortage of this commodity. A timber mill was started in Tawonga by Mates, of Albury, in 1945, and electricity became available in 1946 the S.E.C. bought the mill, and enlarged it. In 1960 it was purchase by a local family. They also started a timber mill in Mt Beauty and worked both until 1980 when they closed the Tawonga mill and enlarged the mill called Mt. Beauty Timbers Pty Ltd which employed approximately 50 people. The Australian Comforts Fund was formed during the first World War and was an amalgamation of various organisations which were sending items of comfort such as toiletries, clothing and food to Australian troops who were fighting overseas. It ceased its work and was dissolved in 1920 at the ceasation of the war but was started again to continue the same work in 1939.In Australia it rivalled the work of the red Cross and many of the volunteers involved were women. As well as making and providing items themselves there was major fundraising to purchase further items. Over the course of the war they provided over 1.5 million hampers. This certificate was presented to Mrs Steward for valuable services rendered to the Australian Comforts Fund during World War 1939-1945. The Australian Comforts fund was wound up in June 1946.This certificate recognises the work of one of our residents to a fund which was Australia wide and would have been one of numerous certificates presented around the country. The Australian Comforts fund was an organisation with which numerous people would have been affiliated and which also assisted many soldiers over the years. Laurence SCOTT PENDLEBURY (1914 - 1986) Born Melbourne Laurence Scott Pendlebury studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School between 1932 and 1938 and then at Swinburne Technical College. He served during World War Two with the AIF between 1941 and 1945. Teaching at Swinburne Technical College between 1946 and 1963 Laurence Scott Pendlebury was head of the art school from 1963 until his retirement in 1974. He was president of the Victorian Artists’ Society from 1961 to 1963. Awards include: Dunlop Prize in 1950, 1951, 1953 and 1954; Gibson Prize, Victorian Artists’ Society in 1956; Wynne Prize in 1956, 1957, 1960 (shared with John Perceval) and 1968; Caltex Prize in 1957; Victorian Artists’ Society Artist of the Year (shared) in 1975. Nornie Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leding musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. As a violinist Nornie Gude played for more than a decade with the Zelman Orchestra.
