They were particularly popular in both Australian and New Zealand during the early 20th century. They were particularly common during and after World War I when they were used to raise funds for returned soldiers. It is currently the only photo in the collection of a social event connected to Our Holy Redeemer Church and the only one which includes Dr William M Collins who was the parish priest from 1933-1941. Dr Collins was a significant figure in the Catholic Church in Melbourne in the first half of the 20th century. REF: The Advocate: The first priest-editor by Fiona Power; Kairos Catholic Journal Volume 22, Issue 16. - 2 September 2011": Summary: Born in Kilmore in 1884, William Collins attended South Melbourne College and then the University of Melbourne, where he assisted in the formation of the Newman Society of Victoria. After graduating in arts in 1911, he worked at the Melbourne Public Library and the Education Department. In 1912, at the age of 28, he went to Rome, where he studied for the priesthood at Urban College. He obtained doctorates in philosophy and theology and was ordained on 3 June 1917. He returned to Melbourne and was appointed curate at St Mary’s, West Melbourne, and St Francis’, Lonsdale Street. In 1918, Dr Collins became editor of The Advocate. He remained in the role for seven years. Dr Collins was parish priest of Dandenong, Daylesford, East Malvern, Surrey Hills and Kew, and administrator at St Francis’. Fifteen year old Albert Edward Gill was born in Poplar, Middlesex, in 1868. He volunteered in May 1883 as an Apprentice Ordinary Seaman with the Merchant Services under the London shipping company James P. Corry & Co., owner of the Star Line. The shipping company by this time had a fleet of both clipper and steam cargo ships that sailed as far away as Australia and New Zealand. Gill’s apprenticeship was a four year unpaid term, with only his food, drink, lodgings, washing and medical needs provided for him. The contract had many conditions but it was a wonderful opportunity for a young man. His father James Gill signed the papers as his guarantor. In December 1887 Gill completed his apprenticeship and qualified as an Able Seaman. He served for another seven years with James P. Corry & Co. and earned his Certificate of Competency as a Master in the Merchant Service in April 1894, having passed the Ordinary Examination. (The transcription of Gill's two certificates is provided further down this page.) JAMES P. CORRY & CO. - The Belfast Company was formed in 1826 by Robert Corry, and imported timber from Canada to Ireland. In 1859 the company expanded to import timber from Calcutta, and relocated its offices to London. In the 1880s the company had a fleet of 13 tall clipper ships and included ports in Australia and New Zealand in its destinations. It continued to expand trade even further and by 1908 the Star Line had seven cargo steamers trading with the East and Far East (the ships were named Star of Australia, Star of Japan, Star of England, Star of New Zealand, Star of Ireland, Star of Scotland and Star of Victoria). In 1912 the Star Line ships added an emigrant service to Australia. The certificates are also significant for their association with James P. Corry & Col. owner of the Star Line shipping company that provided trade and passengers to Australia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Connor's Creek is/was one of two major waterways bisecting Kew, both of which empty into the Yarra River. Connor's Creek originates near the grounds of Genazzano FCJ College, which is one of the highest points in Kew. Until the 1930s, this was an open creek until a barrel drain - the Kew Main Drain - was constructed. As the creek ran through Kew it cut across a number of roads the maintenance of which was a continuing concern for Kew Councillors. In August 1864, the Council called for tenders to erect a stone culvert and embankment over Connor's Creek, on Belford-road. This may be the embankment on which the boys are sitting.Original, small photographic positive on card of two boys, identified by the donor as 'Wal Ives and Bert' [Albert Watson] sitting on bluestone capping above an outlet of Connor's Creek. He had multiple copies of this photo, which may have been obtained with the aim of distributing them to other platoon members. Leslie George Lobb - born 15 July 1920 in Box Hill; married Elizabeth Annie Stephenson in 1954; died 14 Nov. 1997. Leslie became a service station / garage proprietor at 352 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert a business he took over from his father. An associated mechanical business operated under the name of Leo Green Motors, at the same address. The family lived next door at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert. Leslie's father Harry Lobb had operated at an adjoining property (350 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert) as a fuel and ice merchant, before installing a petrol bowser to service the expanding motor car industry. The house at 354 Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert was removed and relocated by the family in 2000 to Mirboo North, Gippsland, Victoria, where it still stands.The photo is a touchstone to local servicemen who served in World War 2.A B&W / sepia photo with a narrow white border of 25 men in uniform. This church was built in 1907 and became known as Holy Trinity Surrey Hills. This name had previously been used by the Anglican Church in Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert. This henceforth became known as St George's Anglican Church, Mont Albert. There are 2 copies: the original donated print and an enlargement. The original is mounted on card with photo mounts along with 890, 891 and 892. It measures 13 cm x 9 cm. Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert from the 1920s in particular of events and activities associated with the Church of England.Black and white photo of the original Holy Trinity Church building in Union Road. It is constructed of weatherboards, above which there is plasterboard and timber strapping. The roof is of terracotta tiles with a small steeple at the front and a larger one towards the rear of the building. There is a box bay window at the front and the entrance is from a porch on the southern side of the building. This is approached by stairs. Part of the vicarage can be seen on the northern high side of the church and to the south there is vacant land. The whole property sits behind a simple post and wire fence. There is a phaeton in the foreground beside a relatively newly planted street tree. Stanley Lawrence Dawson had the grocery at 148 Union Road during the 1940s. The premises had previously been occupied by J T Poynton (butcher). It passed to A J Griffiths, also a grocer, c 1950 and then became a dry cleaners c1970. Stan was born in Werribee in c1890; died Balwyn in 1956. He married Gladys Elizabeth Goodfellow in 1922. The factory was in Mont Albert Road near the railway line and the family lived at 2 Stanhope Street. The series from which the photograph is drawn provides a snapshot by a commercial photographic studio of specific street works in Kew as well as providing examples of public works infrastructure being commissioned by local government in the 1970s. At the edge of the church roof and on the horizon is 'The Knoll' on the corner of Union Road and Wandsworth Road. To the left of this is 297 Mont Albert Road, home of the Michael Parer family and further left is "Quamby", home of the Sherar family. This is easily recognised by the square viewing tower located on the west wing of the house. The Sherar family owned 'Quamby' from 1900 until 1925, when it became Mosgiel Private Hospital. Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert in the 1920s; many associated with events and activities of the Church of England. This is the home of Ernest Augustus Young (1891-1985) and Ruby Nichell Whitby (1892-1984) and their son Ernest Lance Young. Lance was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills; after he married Beryl Mair. Electoral roll for 1937 gives the house name as 'Whitby Lodge'. Ernest and Ruby also had twins Clive and James who died in infancy. Buried at Box Hill Cemetery - M-*-0867 (family plot) This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families. REF: Memoir of Laurie Newton (nee Young) - Her grandfather bought the land and had the house built. She remembers it as having pressed ceilings in some rooms and ornate fireplaces and tiles and leadlight windows in some rooms and doors with leadlight panels. Her grandfather was a keen gardener with an ornamental front garden and many vegetables and fruit trees in the back yard. Her grandfather sold the adjoining block (No 3 York Street), which had been used for growing flowers and vegetables, to John and Edna Jean. Reid. She also remembered that he extended the house and divided it into 2 flats, renting out the northern side for 20 years. Sold by Jellis Craig on 24 December 2010 - With formal living, dining, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, garage/ample OSP. Land: 18.2m x 40.8m (60' x 134') approx. Mrs George Cumpston, formerly Miss Elizabeth Newman, of Mont Albert (See also 1289, Mr George William Cumpston) They were married in 1876. He was a commercial traveller. Their property was in the area of Mont Albert between the railway line and Mont Albert Road and Elgar Road. Listed as living in Box Hill in the 1903 electoral roll. Joseph Arthur Bailey, described as a manager in electoral rolls, came to Surrey Hills some time before 1903. He was born in Brighton in 1873 and died in Burwood in 1929 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery. He was the son of George Bailey and Georgina Hardwick, who lived in Healesville for a time but 'retired' to Surrey Hills where they are listed at 'Claremont' in Mont Albert Road in 1919. Joseph married Eleanor Beatrice Greenhill in 1897. They had 3 sons - Rupert Aitken (who served in WW1); Kenneth Alan and Edwin George. Prior to living in Trafalgar Street they lived at 9 Victoria Crescent. In 1902 it became the first site of Milverton Girls School. From 1930s to 1960s it was home to Miss Marjorie Vahland, a locally well-known nursing sister. This cottage is shown on the 1906 maps and also on a 1906 photo taken from Mosgeil Hospital in Mont Albert Road down Vincent Street. At this time there was no chimney on the cottage.
