Chain saws, chain and ball(clearing) and bulldozing methods came in the mid 1900's. ...This raker/jointer/guage set is a sharpening tool for cross cut logging saws. The logging saws used in the early 1900's for the clearing of forests required constant sharpening of their "cutting teeth". The logging of forested areas during these times was very much a "hands on" method of either one or two men by the use of saw or hand axe. Chain saws, chain and ball(clearing) and bulldozing methods came in the mid 1900's.This particular saw sharpening method was used by surveyors laying down boundaries for the S.E.C. Victoria Hydro Electricity Scheme (1920's). This item was given to a local Kiewa Valley lad who accompanied the initial surveyors. The lad was responsible for the tendering and feeding of the surveyors "pack horses". Surveys during this period and in the dense mountainous terrain of the Victorian Alps was both exhausting and hazardous. Overnight accommodation at various log cabins was not always possible and swag/tent alternative was the "fall back" This raker/jointer saw sharpener was made in the USA (DISSTON) from cast and flat iron. The main body has been painted in orange. It has three adjustment screws on the top horizontal bar and one bolt on(adjusting) leveling platform on the bottom. The small size and weight of this saw sharpener was ideal for the travelling/mobile logger or surveyor(as in this case). The main frame resembles two towers connected by two horizontal bars and the top of the towers has a horizontal bar with adjustment screws. See KVHS 0090 (B) for setting stake wedge adjusting the rake and cutting angle and KVHS 0090 (C) for a small spanner (for adjustments). On one inner supports is stamped "DISSTON" and on the other "U.S.A."hand tool, saw, sharpening method, tree felling. -

QWERTY keyboard with 42 keys in four rows, including one shift key. ...The Remington Typewriter Company originated from the firearms manufacturer E. Remington and Sons which was founded in 1816 in Ilion, New York. After the American Civil War, the company diversified into farm implements, sewing machines and typewriters. Remington started production of their first typewriter on 1st March 1873 with their first commercially successful typewriter, the Sholes & Glidden being produced in 1874. Key milestones include the 1878 Remington No. 2 which was the first typewriter to have both upper and lowercase. They were also the first typewriters to feature the QWERTY keyboard layout. E. Remington and Sons sold the typewriter division to Wyckoff, Benedict, and Seamans, who formed the Remington Typewriter Company in 1886. In 1927 a further merger created the company Remington Rand. It later became one of the biggest computer manufacturers in the United States. Production of Remington typewriters eventually ceased after a 1986 merger that formed the Unisys Corporation. The Remington Standard No.7 typewriter was manufactured by Wyckhoff, Seamans & Benedict of Ilion, New York, U.S.A. Remington typewriters were originally made by the Remington Typewriter Company but in 1893 Wyckhoff, Seamans & Benedict obtained sole distribution rights for Remington typewriters and sole manufacturing rights in 1896. It is an up strike class typewriter in which the typebars rest in a semicircular vertical type basket and rotate upwards to strike the paper and platen from below. As a result the printed characters are not immediately visible to the operator. The platen had to be pivoted upwards and backwards for the operator to check their work. Remington persisted with the upstrike design until 1908 when they introduced the Model 10 which was a visible writer where the work could be seen as it was typed. This item is significant because typewriters such as were used widely throughout businesses in Wodonga and internationally.A Remington upstrike typewriter. It features a black-finished metal frame with gold decoration. Type-bars are arranged in a vertical circular basket with cylindrical platen on top. It was part of the dress uniform for fire brigade members in the 1960s and 70s. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was established in the early 1860s after a fire at the Flying Buck Hotel in Liebig Street prompted a public meeting to establish a permanent fire authority in the town. There had been a couple of attempts previously to set up a local fire brigade. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade actively participates in Country Fire Authority Championships and competitions and has been very successful, particularly in the 19th century. John (Jack) Sizeland retired when he was 65 in 1977 (37 years of service). This blazer is of interest as it shows us what fire fighters in Warrnambool were wearing in the mid 20th century (dress uniform). It is also a memento of one long-serving firefighter, Jack SizelandThis is a man’s black blazer with three large black buttons. The sleeve ends and the three pockets have a diagonal red and black patterned braid stitched on. The upper portion of the blazer and the sleeves are lined with black material. Several kinds of crops were experimented with such as hops, hemp and maize. ...When early settlers began to arrive on the Snowy River somewhere in the 1880s, the land was mostly swamps and heavily timbered jungle on the river frontages. The swamps were drained bit by bit using hand tools. The frontages were cleared by axe and shovel and fire. Several kinds of crops were experimented with such as hops, hemp and maize. Maize grew particularly well and became the main crop of the district. Our ancestors used axes, gluts or wedges, froes, draw knives and spelk planes for splitting wood. The froe was designed in many sizes and designs for splitting timber. It is typically an L-shaped tool made up of a wedge-shaped blade with a dull, but not blunt, knife edge and a wood handle. Blades were usually straight with a socket forged at one end for a handle, but curved blades were also made. Most handles were round and tapered and were inserted up through this socket. But some froes had eyes similar to those on axes for handles that were wedged. The froe handle is held in an upright position in one hand while the other hand drives the top of the blade downward with a wood froe club or mallet. After a split is started, the froe is wiggled downward to lengthen it until the split is complete. Most old froes were hand forged, but they were also available in many catalogues. The 1873 D.R. Barton American catalogue offered straight froes at 12 1/2 cents per inch. You can still buy new froes from many tool manufacturers today.A tool that has not changed in design or use since its inception several hundred years ago to split timber for various uses.Froe, also called cooper's froe or stave froe, without handle.Noneflagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, froe, cooper's froe, stave froe, wood splitter, carpenders tools, coopers tool, splitting timber -
