NNN - BALLAST HOPPER, This vehicle was built by the Tasmanian Govt. Railways in 1954 and classified QG. A number were obtained by the Puffing Billy Railway for use on ballast trains but to date, only two have been converted. When the first of these was converted for 2’6” gauge operation it kept the Tasmanian QG but with the addition of an N prefix, and also kept its Tasmanian number of 3. However, to follow traditional V.R. practice, in June 2003 it was reclassified to NNN and numbered 1 as the nearest counterpart on the V.R. was the broad-gauge NN. Functional Object - Tramcar, Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), Restaurant Tram Cuthberts 939, 1948
On of a class of 120 trams built at Preston Workshops between 1939 and 1951. Third tram to be converted to a Colonial Tramcar Restaurant Tram. Of the six trams converted, the only former Melbourne Restaurant tram in use currently (March 2019), trams 4, 5, and 6 having been withdrawn during October 2018.Four motor bogie tram - ex Melbourne - tram No. 939 - One of a class of 120 trams built at Preston Workshops between 1939 and 1951. Third tram to be converted to a Colonial Tramcar Restaurant Tram. Of the six trams converted, the only former Melbourne Restaurant tram in use currently (March 2019), trams 4, 5, and 6 having been withdrawn during October 2018. The tram was built by the MMTB as No. 939 in 1948 at Preston Workshops as a standard SW6 tramcar. It was resident for most of its life at Camberwell, Kew and South Melbourne depots and finally Southbank depot. Heavily rebuilt internally to give a flat floor, air-conditioned, 240V and 24V systems fitted along with changes to bulkheads and position of the passenger door and a goods door in 1994. The tram was converted into Melbourne Restaurant tram No. 3 in 1994/95, being launched on 8-2-1995. While in the later part of its use by the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant Co, it was named “Valentine” during July 2008. It was withdrawn from service in May 2012, when it was replaced by No. 935 (Restaurant No. 6). In August 2014, the Museum received a grant from the Victorian Government of $40,000 to refurbish tram – part of the Transport Investing in Regions Program. The tram was relocated to the Ballarat depot on 29/10/2014. Refurbishment work was completed during March 2016 and the tram was formally launched on 5/4/2016.. The tram is named after Sir Henry Cuthberts (1829 - 1907), the first Chairman of the Ballaarat Tramway Co (the horse tram operator). Sir Henry was a Ballarat based solicitor, member of the Legislative Council, Knighted in 1897 and strong supporter of many Ballarat institutions. In 2005 Michele Matthews interviewed current and former residents of Bendigo for her thesis on the 1930s Depression as part of her PhD Research, with the University of Melbourne Faculty of Arts, History Department. Michele interviewed fifteen members of prominent Bendigonian families. The thesis was titled: "How Depressing?: The impact of the Great Depression on Bendigo and District 1925-1935". The Michele Matthews Collection contains fourteen audio cassette tape recordings and one written transcript. The tapes are each approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes duration. The questions presented to the interviewees explore everyday experiences they would have lived through at the time of the Depression. The questions covered sixteen relevant subjects: • Introduction and housing • Social activities, swimming, cinemas, school and games played with friends • Organizations such as the RSL, Relief Committees etc. and any effect they had on family life • The life of the single woman • Unemployment and Employment • Government Assistance • Charities Aid • Self-help • People Power, e.g. boycotts or protests • Politics • Trouble or crime • Family Health, Medical and Diet • Education • General memories of, and hardships encountered, during the DepressionAudio tape interview with Amy Brown (Nee Osterfield). Amy was born in 1922. In 1942 she married Allan Stanley Brown. Her father, Charles Osterfield was a wood cutter before becoming unemployed. She never attended school. One of a group of slides taken by members of the Society of built heritage in Kew in 1979-80. The selection of subject matter reflects the priorities of the period. The colour of some slides has degraded.The slides represent a snapshot in time of built architecture in Kew, much of which has changed in the forty-plus period since they were created.Colour positive transparency (slide) of 'Ramornie' in Pakington Street , Kew in 1979. Ramornie was built for the Scottish solicitor, James Maitland Campbell. He employed his brother William M. Campbell as architect, and N. W. Frogley of Prahran as builder. Campbell was Mayor of Kew on three occasions. The house was built during his first tenure of the mayoral office. After a succession of tenants and owners in the 20th century, Ramornie became known as ‘The Towers’, and was converted into a boarding house.
