Painting - Watercolour, Ronald Coudrey, Falkiners Cottage, 1980
Originally situated on the northwest corner of Ely and Porter streets, Eltham. Incorrectly titled by the artist as "Old School House" Newsletter No. 189 November 2009 Donation: Lesley Rickards of South Australia has made a donation to the Society of a painting by her father Ronald Coudrey, who was a well-known artist in that state. The water colour painting reproduced below, is titled "Old School House, Eltham" but has been identified as an old cottage that once stood in Ely Street Eltham near the Eltham High School. In the late 1970s and early 80s this building was the subject of a campaign by our Society with the objective of its preservation. It had been identified as having associations with Eltham pioneer Frederick Falkiner. Suggestions that it was an old school building shifted to this site were not supported by any evidence. The land developer donated the cottage and a small area of land to the Eltham Shire Council. However, due to its poor condition and vandalism, it was decided that the cottage could not be retained and ultimately it was demolished. The land on which it stood has recently been sold by Nillumbik Shire Council. The Society has a number of photos and another painting of this building, but this recent donation is an important addition to our collection and we are grateful for the donation.art, falkiners cottage, ronald coudrey -

Artwork, other - Painting, Peter Glass, Summer Landscape, Kangaroo Ground, 1968
Arthur William Glass known as Peter was born August 28, 1917. During the 1930s, Peter Glass and a young Graeme Bell were studying painting under Max Meldrum. Graeme Bell at that time was undecided whether to devote his life to music or painting. In 1938, inspired by what they had seen at 'Montsalvat', Peter Glass along with Graeme and Roger Bell (whose names were to become internationally known as the leaders of Australia's most famous jazz band) agreed to purchase land at Eltham to build themselves a mud brick house. For some time, Eltham had been their chosen place for painting and sketching, but it was not until they visited the 'Jorgensen Colony', as it was then known, and saw the possibilities of building in earth, that they decided to establish a permanent base in Eltham. In July, the three of them bought a few acres of land at the top of John Street and started making mud bricks for a proposed sixty square sized house. Following the Second World War, Peter Glass returned in 1946 to live permanently in Eltham. He resumed work on building of the adobe house which he had commenced before the war. During some years spent in England and France he married a French girl and on returning to Eltham he built another adobe house in which he lived with his wife, Cecile Madeleine, and two children, Julian and Marie-Luce on land adjoining the original house. Peter Glass died in December 1997 aged 80, his wife Cecile in 2006, aged 79. They are memorialised in Eltham Cemetery. Much of the inspiration for his landscape painting comes from the Eltham bush and the Yarra flowing through it.oil on chipboard 33 x 40.5 x 1.0 cm Signed 'Peter Glass in red paint lower right of centre Evidence of some paint rub-off at edges from previous frame mounting (frame removed).Reverse side painted in pale yellow cream and inscribed: 'Summer Landscape - 1968 Kangaroo Ground' in black paint1968, arthur william glass, artwork, kangaroo ground, paintings, peter glass -

Photograph, Formal photo of the Kleinert family of 34 Union Road, Surrey Hills
William was a coach-builder, wheelwright and blacksmith. He moved from Prahran (13 Regent Street) to Surrey Hills to property owned by the family. The house at 34 Union Road was built in 1905 for William and his wife Emily. Their son Ernest worked with him as a coach painter and also worked as a painter undertaking intricate hand painting on early cars. Their other son Martin played for the Surrey Hills Football Club. In return for the support given to the club by Mrs Emily Kleinert, it built a rotunda in South Surrey Park as a memorial to her. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Kleinert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. The Kleinert land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. The Kleinert property later became the South Surrey Park. The family sold the land to the Camberwell Council in the 1950s. Ernest and Ida Kleinert lived on the corner of Scotsdale and Warrigal Roads. The donor of the photo Nada Harris, nee Kleinert, was Ernest and Ida's daughter. Ida lived to a good age (> 93 years) and in later life lived in Burwood. Many of the family are buried in Box Hill Cemetery. Friedrich Johann Wilhelm (William) Kleinert (1870-1949) married (1872-1937) in 1893. Their children were: Ernest Henry John (1892-1971) married Ida Grace Vassie. The figures tend to be annonymous, sometimes included more to establish the scale than for a narrative purpose. The figures are well clothed and it could be assumed that it is not a hot summer's day. Painting: Melinda Harper, 'Untitled'
This work was completed during Harper's Laughing Waters residency at Boomerang House, 2001. The Laughing Waters Artist in Residence Program was run by Nillumbik Shire Council (in partnership with Parks Victoria) 2001-2015. "My painting is about colour and form, and their relationship. I am interested in what one colour does to another colour, the weight of a colour and the feeling of a colour. Colour is very complex; I am looking and responding to what I see and what interests me." Melinda Harper in Artist Profile journal article by Melissa Pesa, 2015.The painting is representative of Harper's artistic practice and the vivid colours and abstraction particular to her work. Small-medium sized oil painting of vivid, bold, coloured shapes arranged in a kaleidoscope pattern. There is an array of colours each placed in proximity to each other to create a vibrant, lively atmosphere.
