This item is part of the Dodgson Collection, which was bequeathed to Queen's College in 1892 by the Rev. James Dodgson. The collection was created by Aquila Dodgson, brother of James. Aquila Dodgson was a friend of the English Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, and it was through this friendship the Aquila was able to acquire ancient Egyptian artefacts. A detailed study of the collection was made by Christine Elias "Discovering Egypt: Egyptian Antiquities at the University of Melbourne", M.A. thesis 2010.Upper half, feet and band running down front of figure is yellow outlined in red. This item was used well before European settlement and clearly demonstrates the development of the local Aboriginal tribes, Dhudhuroa and Yaitmathang in the use of a cutting /chopping implement, made from Mount William sourced material i.e. greenstone. This item was probably traded at the Bogong Mountain tribal yearly summer ceremoniesThe significance of this item places it at the fore front of human development in this region. The period when this tool was manufactured represents the time when the natural landscape had not been altered and the natural vegetation, fauna and flora, had not been subjected to imported species.This also proves that local tribes did live in this area and or the Bogong High Plains.Small ground edge stone axe head. This stone was held by a European family for 200 years and was found on the family farm. It was gifted to Uncle Brien Nelson in Castlemaine. This implement could be many thousands of years old. This unusually large axe head would not have been carried from place to place and was probably hidden for occasional use crafting large objects.This stone axe head is shaped to a sharpened rounded edge at one end and is broad and blunt at the other end. It is an elongated teardrop shape in cross section. It is presumed that the spray unit was imported in 1915 and a local manufacturer (unknown) made the wooden barrel and cart and mounted the Ballarat made motor and the imported spray unit.|Following the purchase of the R.E.Gray property, Nunawading Council Engineer, John Herbertson on finding the Spray Unit suggested that it become part of the Implements display at Schwerkolt Cottage.Myer Orchard Spray. It consist of the spray unit which is driven by a Ronaldson-Tippet Motor. The large wooden barrel spray container (mounted on the cart) contained approx 100 gallons of highly corrosive spray (hence the use of wood). Use to identify a tramway employee - a trackman - Track maintainer. Would have allowed free travel when on duty and to and from work. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921 or when a different identification system was implemented. Made by Stokes and Sons Melbourne.Demonstrates the method of identifying cable tram employees. Round pressed brass badge with the words "Trackman" and number "240" pressed into the centre of the badge around the top half of the badge "All Lines" with small horizontal lines within the individual letters. Has the Tramways Board logo on the lower part of the badge. On the rear of the badge, two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a single-piece leather strap with a buttonhole cut into it to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Langwill Bros & Davies of Melbourne were agents for imported farm pump engines, windmills and other farm implements.. Because of war shortages, they started building the engines themselves under the Challenge brand in 1916. "..with the exception of the magneto, every part of the engine is manufactured in Australia from Australian raw material." In 1883, NSW did not yet have a fully implemented system of compulsory civil registration for births, deaths, and marriages. While births were being registered, the information and format of birth certificates would vary. The NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages was established in 1856, but it took some time to become fully operational and widely adopted. This is a souvenir pennant of the H.M.A.S. Warrnambool, named after the City of Warrnambool in Victoria. This ship was the second of that name. The first H. M.A.S. Warrnambool, launched in 1941, was one of 60 Bathurst-class corvettes commissioned by the Australian Government. It was involved in mine clearance work in the Great Barrier Reef after World War Two. The mines had been laid by the Australian Government during the war to protect Australian waters. In 1947 the first H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was sunk by one of these mines and lies on the ocean floor off Cockburn Reef in northern Queensland. The second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was commissioned in 1981 and was a Fremantle-class patrol boat assisting in capturing illegal fishing boats and participating in military exercises in Australian waters. In 2005 the second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was decommissioned after 24 years’ service. This pennant is important as a souvenir of the H.M.A.S Warrnambool, a ship that had obvious links with the City of Warrnambool. In 2005 the Mayor of Warrnambool, Glenys Phillpot, attended the decommissioning of this ship at Darwin and brought back several souvenirs of the ship. This is a triangular-shaped pennant made of dark blue felt material. It has stitching at the straight edge with two tabs for attaching the pennant to a pole or post. The pennant has a badge of yellow, black and white tonings printed or stamped on to the felt. The badge includes a white unicorn, a stylized ship and crown, a boomerang and two other implements and the motto, ‘Protect and Avenge’. The words, ‘H.M.A.S. Parrying shields have long been used within Aboriginal communities not only for protection, but as a symbolic implement used in rituals. Aboriginal men using very basic tools made them. They were designed to be mainly used in battle but were also used in ceremonies. Many shields have traditional designs or fluting on them whilst others are just smooth. The necessary tools and equipment for hunting, fishing and warfare were one of the very few items that Aboriginals carried with them from place to place. Most were used for a multiplicity of purposes. Because many were made from raw natural materials, such as wood, generally only partial remains are found today. Initial court cases for the Western district were held and controlled for some time by Rutledge in Port Fairy. The first courthouse was built around 1854 and was in service until the stone building was built next to it in 1870. These two implements were used until around 1970 when heating was installed in the courthouse. They were decommissioned by Mr Ellis Roberts, Public Works Department Inspector.These implements have a strong connection to a public building which has a long association with the town and surrounding area. The courthouse of 1863 was the scene of an infamous murder of Constable O’Boyle in front of the fireplace. Shovel has barley sugar twisted handle with eight sided domed top. It is flared at the bottom to hold the spade which is attached with two metal rivets. Spade contains a number of holes cut into oval shape in centre and has fluted side edges. The tongs consist of two parts held together below a short handle with a metal rivet and two metal discs.
