The Hamilton-Smith collection was donated by the children of Grace Mary Hamilton-Smith nee Ellwood (1911-2004) and John Hamilton-Smith (1909-1984) who settled in Wodonga in the 1940s. The Ellwood family had lived in north-east Victoria since the late 1800s. Grace’s mother, Rosina Ellwood nee Smale, was the first teacher at Baranduda in 1888, and a foundation member of the C.W.A. Rosina and her husband Mark retired to Wodonga in 1934. Grace and John married at St. David’s Church, Albury in 1941. John was a grazier, and actively involved in Agricultural Societies. The collection contains significant items which reflect the local history of Wodonga, including handmade needlework, books, photographs, a wedding dress, maps, and material relating to the world wars. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of social and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history. A lace head dress belonging to the women of the family of George Ward Cole’s in the late 1800s. George Ward Cole was an early member of the Victorian Parliament and the family featured prominently in Melbourne Society in their time. They established a substantial home known as “St Ninians” at 10 Miller Street in 1841. The family reportedly entertained Melbourne’s first Royal visitor the Duke Of Edinburgh, Queen Victoria’s second son, at St Ninians in 1867. In later years St Ninians was subsequently subdivided and later demolished. A hand sewn cream lace cap from late 1800s. A silk satin ribbon that encircles the back of the crown of the head, creates the structure of this cap. Towards the front it also has a net and wire-reinforced peak. Over the top of this support is a central diamond shaped lace piece of seven and a half centimeters diameter to which is attached a fine lace net that is gathered and stitched around the edge of the central lace. Two decorative bows of the same silk satin fabric are positioned on the support over the top of the lace at either temple of the wearer. "W-COLE" hand stitched on inside of band. It is of historic interest as it was amongst the belongings of the donor's Great Aunts who were both dressmakers at the original Terang & District Co-Op which was established in 1908.The item is of significance socially as an example of women's clothing in the Victorian era.A short, waist-length bodice most likely made as a performance costume. It is representative of a Victorian bodice style though the lacing used indicates that it would not have been worn in those times due to its revealing design. Flexible metal stays provide shape to the bodice at the front and back. Sleeves are elbow length and lined with cream fabric. The bodice has a lace collar and the sleeves are trimmed with the same lace. Small gold coloured beads are stitched to the flower centres of the lace pattern. The burgundy coloured satin has an embossed floral pattern. The lace is of interest as it is from an older time period and being beaded would be especially sought after. A dickey is a type of false shirt-front that was originally intended to be worn with a tuxedo. Women made their own lace dickeys as a way to spice up their wardrobe. It was designed to be worn at the front, so that the lace decoration showed underneath another garment. This dickey is small and was worn by Marjorie Burton as a child. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. She came from a middle-class working church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made most of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. This coat was part of the Presbyterian moderator's regalia which also consisted of a tri-corn hat, black bib, lace jabot, britches, silk stockings, gaiters and buckled shoes.Black wool, lined cutaway coat with a crew neck. The coat has seven pairs of black buttons and is secured edge to edge with a single hook and eye at the 4th and 5th buttons. It has lace cuffs, braiding and pleats at the back. The black lining is quilted at the top and there is a pocket on the inside right breast. The sleeves of the coat are lined with white fabric and the lace cuffs are secured with six pearl buttons. I have lived in Box Hill now City of Whitehorse since 1970 I have belonged to Box Hill Spinners and Weavers Inc. since 1990.During the 90s' Box Hill Spinners and Weavers participated in the Annual Sheep and Woolcraft Show, at that time held in the Melbourne Showground. As well as submitting individual entries we always entered the Group Competition, known as the '5 articles' the entry had to have 5 separate articles made by a group and displaying different woolcraft techniques . In 1997 our Box Hill entry focused on 'The Planets' featuring five capes. The red one representing Mars the red planet. It was woven. The dark cape represented Jupiter. It was also woven. the Neptune cape was felted in blue and greens. The Earth cape featured knitting and crochet. My contribution was the Venus cape featuring spinning from raw merino fleece and silk. Once completed this wool/silk yarn was fashioned using hairpin lace. I was adept at spinning by this time but knew nothing about the old technique of hairpin lace.
