This money, belt made of soft leather, would have been used in the mid 1900's by horse riding traders or wealthy property owners. It could also have been used by miners or other commercial business men. The main criteria for such a belt is security for valuables during travel on horseback. Commercial traders who plied their wares on horseback or caravans during a period where poor roads and flood prone rivers could dislodge wallets or money "sacks".The Kiewa Valley in the early 1900's was an environment which was frequented by the "canny" travelling salesman using dirt tracks and having to cross swollen rivers and creeks throughout the year. Travelling times within the rural areas in and surrounding the valley called for more frequent stops in bush lands. Camping presented itself with great challenges not to loose small cumbersome coin and notes. Local banks were of short supply and although bartering was a thriving method of transactions within the Valley traders from other regions were not so forth coming. Where ever possible local "trades" were called upon more than in city areas for limited products of a rural incline.This "vintage" handcrafted money belt has been professionally made circa 1950's. It appears as though it might have been made in a saddlery. There are five pockets each fastened by black painted "press studs". This uniform belonged to Sapper Hughes 3795948 of the Royal Australian Engineers Corps. By the date on the uniform, it is assumed that he served C 1968.This uniform has significance as an example of a uniform worn by soldier ranks for daily work and dress parades.Khaki coloured long trousers with attached suspenders. They have a button up front (5 brown plastic buttons). There are two pockets on either side of the trousers and one button up pocket on the back right with a flap that is fastened with a single brown plastic button. There are three extra brown plastic buttons on the back exterior of the waistband and six belt loops on the whole length of the waist band. The interior pocket fabric is more light weight and a slightly more green in colour. The interior of the right back pocket includes a white patch of fabric with printed inscriptions and further inscriptions written in black ink just above. The suspenders are composed mostly of blue, grey, beige, black and cream striped thick fabric. There are also silver coloured metallic components (which include inscriptions) and leather sections, most of which have a reddish/brown coating on the exterior and a white coating on the interior. One leather component has inscriptions in black ink on the interior as opposed to a white coating. The suspenders are attached to the trousers by six brown plastic buttons on the interior of the waistband. This belt is typical of those used in the lineshaft system of operation, with one central motor sometimes steam but later electrical, which allowed the power to be disippated to a number of points. This belt links into Warrnambool’s past with the name of S Carter. Samuel Carter emigrated from Yorkshire in 1865 and opened his saddlery in 1866 in partnership with a Mr Roach until he moved his business to Fairy Street around1885. This is most likely an album of some significance as the name ‘Vickers’ on the inside cover of this album suggests that the photographs belonged to the Vickers family. Robert Vickers, who came from Nottingham, was a farmer at Summerside in Panmure in the 1860s, 70s and 80s so the photographs in the album are likely to be of his family members. The inclusion of 2 Turkish buttons and the possibility of the belt itself being Turkish seems to indicate that the belt was obtained at Gallipoli.
