The dinner on Saturday 4 November 1939 was held to celebrate Brigadier Savige's appointment to Command the 17th Infantry Brigade, 6th Division, 2nd AIF. The menu is included and the order of service with speeches by Sir John Gellibrand and a response by Stan Savige. A copy of both are also in the archive. There are five quotes through menu that sum up common sentiments of Stan Savige. Including 'Leave it to me and my little playmate'; 'This is the tamest fight I've seen - let's liven it up'; 'The only "experience" is trust in God then trial and error.' Savige's subsequent exploits in WWII are detailed in Chapter 4 of 'There goes a man' by W.B. Russell, which chronicles not only battles fought but also the politics which blighted his command until the end of the war. Photograph taken to record the launching of Donovan Joynt VC's autobiography, Breaking the Road for the Rest (see Cat. No. 01353). The Legacy torch on the wall behind indicates that the launch took place at Legacy House in Swanston Street, and is confirmed in the text of the newspaper cutting. The cutting also records the fact that Joynt was then the oldest surviving member of Melbourne Legacy. A black and white photo of Stan Savige's funeral from a file about the life of Stan Savige. The funeral was at St Paul's Cathedral on 18 May 1954. Two thousand men marched in the funeral procession to the Boroondara Cemetery, Kew. As the procession moved off, members of Legacy formed up and marched behind. This is shown in a photo from a Legacy newsletter from July 1954 as copied here. Hundreds of people lined Flinders Street as the procession passed. This photo of President David Ford and a widow with an envelope was taken on the same film as celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of Legacy in the grounds of Government House in 2003. It could be the widow passing over funds raised by the widows clubs to President Ford.There was a strong relationship between Legatees and the widows clubs. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. This photo was with a group of photos from around the 1930s from the early days of Legacy, including cricket team, football team, and camps at Balnarring/Somers (saved as 01915 to 01934).Legatee Savige was an important figure in Legacy's history and his property at Balnarring became very important for Legacy providing outings and camps for junior legatees. A photo of country Junior Legatees that had come to Melbourne for a camp in January 1961 on a bus ready for an outing. The girls came from all over Victoria and stayed for two weeks at Blamey House in Kew. At the time Legatee Bert Davis was CFO, and his daughter Louise was asked to help with the running of the camp. Items are part of a collection of Legacy items from Valma Hutchinson (nee Wigg), a former junior legatee. Valma was accepted into Junior Legacy club in 1940 when she was about 10 years old. She had collected the newspaper clippings of notices in the newspapers for Miss Carre's 90th birthday and also her death notices. The sentiments expressed show how much she was respected by the former Junior Legacy girls. The photocopy includes a picture of 90th birthday celebrations for Miss Carre at Legacy house. A copy of the photo of the girls at Mt Evelyn camp had already been received from Valma Hutchinson (nee Wigg) and is at 01437. It is mentioned that she and her good friend June were in the photo and would have been 16 at the time. Miss Carre is also seen, seated wearing red, in the photo of L/- Grattan's 100th. More photos of Legatee Grattan's 100th are at 00964. A note sent to Legacy with the items mentions Legatee Grattan walked Valma down the aisle at her wedding and that Valma and her daughter would frequently put flowers on his plot in Springvale cemetery.An example of the long term friendship of Junior Legatees that they attend reunions and stay in contact. Here a group of junior legatees enjoy themselves on skis in the snow. It was a nordic skiing weekend at Lake Mountain outside Marysville in August 1987. The photo shows a group of Legatees outdoors possibly in the 1940s as some of the Legatees appear in the Launceston Conference photo from 1940. From the inscription it was a trip to the Grampians 20 years before it was added to the archive. The man in the centre of the front row could be Frank Wittman, who was the smallest man to have enlisted in the 1st AIF and as such the shortest Legatee. Frank Clifford Wittman was only 4ft 4 inches tall (132 cms). Taken from an article in the Bulletin when his medals were sold. He served in both world wars. In the 1970s Legatees Frank Doolan, Cyril Smith and Brian Armstrong were making an attempt to collect items relevant to Legacy's history for an official archive project. They approached legatees for appropriate items and perhaps Aaron Beattie provided this photo then. Delegates from other states were treated to outings when attending Conferences.
