[from EDHS Newsletter No. 46, January 1986:] Our bus trip to Portsea was considered by many to be one of the most enjoyable staged by the Society. Peter Collins of the Peninsula Historical Society travelled with us as a guide. He proved most informative and entertaining, particularly with regard to the Army and Quarantine Reserve at Point Nepean. We also visited the Museum at Sorrento and the site of the 1803 First Settlement. This was a long and tiring, but very rewarding, trip.Colour photographactivities, portsea, sorrento -

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village
Photograph - Historical, Flagstaff Hill, Warrnambool Garrison Fortifications looking towards the Moyjil (Point Ritchie), 1970s
The photograph shows the location of the concrete, horseshoe shaped gun emplacement erected for the cannons. It is part of the Historic Precinct on Flagstaff Hill. The area was accessed either through the space between the Lighthouses (through the cottage grounds) or a service entrance, past the iron huts used by the Lands Department. This photograph, a print, is one of a set of five that show the site of Flagstaff Hill. It is presumed to have been taken by John Lindsay, Founding Director of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. One of the photographs in the set has the pencil inscription "Photo J Lindsay". It was taken in the early 1970s during the initial stages of the development of Flagstaff Hill as a Museum and Maritime Village. The photographs belonged to the donor's grandparents, who lived in the Warrnambool district of Allansford/Naringal. The photograph is a record of the site and surrounds of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village before its development and opening in 1975. It shows the east side of the Surfside Holiday Park in its earlier days. The photograph is significant for recording the location and condition of the original concrete cannon emplacement on the Hill.Coloured photograph, glassy print, one of a set of five. Photograph shows the original site of one of the gun emplacements for the cannons, cannons Historical, looking towards the Moyjil, ,Point Ritchie and overlooking Lady Bay, Warrnambool. The horseshoe shaped concrete gun emplacement is in the foreground on the grassed slopes overlooking the Bay. The site and ablution block of the Surfside Holiday Park is centre right. The left shows the sore of Lady Bay with the cliffs of the Southern Ocean in the distance. The photograph's paper has the printer's watermark on the back. Souvenir, Victoria Fine China, Miniature mug Warrnambool Thunder Point, C 1940
Warrnambool has been an attraction for tourists for over 100 years. It has been popular as a coastal resort and today the winter whale season brings more tourists. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Warrnambool was promoted as a spa and health resort, partly because of its hot and cold sea water baths and partly because of its bracing climate and attractive coastline. Thunder Point, depicted on this item, has been a popular visiting spot for tourists for many years. Buying a high quality ornament such as this one was a popular activity of tourists in the mid 20th century. Tourists today buy souvenir items but the choice and range vary from what was available 80 years ago. This item is retained as an example of a local souvenir bought by tourists in the mid 20th century. This is a small white china mug with a gilt edging or strip around the top opening rim, the base and the handle. There is a colour image of a seascape in blue, yellow and black on the side of the mug and the maker’s name on the base.‘Victoria Fine China’tourism in warrnambool, souvenir china items 20th century, history of warrnambool -

8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regimental Collection
Bronze plaque, 1900 circa
Captain Robert Westrup Salmon was born at Daisy Hill near Talbot 12 July 1862. He joined the Victorian Mounted Rifles in 1883; was commissioned Lieutenant in 1892 and appointed Adjutant (Volunteer) of 2nd Battalion VMR in 1892. He embarked with the 1st Contingent VMR to South Africa in 1899 with the rank of captain. At the battle of Jasfontein (Garsfontein) he was highly complimented in the London Times and other English newspapers for the skilful manner in which he handled the Mounted Infantry under his command. At the time of his death from Enteric Fever on 16 March 1900 at Naauwpoort South Africa he was Staff Captain of the Australian Regiment. Captain Salmon was a councillor of the Borough of Talbot, trustee of the Racing Club and the Cemetery; member of the Board of Directors of the MUIOOF; past master of the Masonic Lodge; church warden of St Michael’s Church Talbot and secretary of the Fire Brigade. The plaque was discovered by retired Military Police officer, Captain Watson and donated to 8/13 VMR Museum circa 1983. Rare example of a memorial plaque to an officer of the Boer War. It is not known where or if it was originally mounted but a church building would seem likely. Large bronze plaque to the memory of Captain Robert Westrup Salmon who died of Enteric Fever while serving with the 1st Contingent Victorian Mounted Rifles during the Boer War. A framed display with photograph of the donor Captain Watson handing the plaque to Officer Commanding 'A' Squadron 8/13 VMR at Buna Barracks Albury in 1984 now accompanies the bronze plaque.Cast in raised lettering surrounding a Victorian Mounted Rifles badge "The tribute of the Officers of the Victorian Mounted Rifles Non-Commissioned Officers & Men to the memory of Captain RS Salmon Talbot who died at Naauwpoort South Africa 16th Mar. 1900"salmon robert westrup captain, talbot, boer war -

32-minute video documentary on 1986 Victorian nurses strike, Breaking point: the 1986 nurses strike, 10 years on, 1998
In October 1986, Victorian nurses began an historic strike action which was to last 50 days. Breaking Point (1998) is a retrospective work, reflecting on the 10 years following the 1986 Victorian strike. It was produced by Mark Bird and Nicholas Bird (of Waterbyrd Filmz, the production company that, as outlined above, also made Vivien Bullwinkel, Nurse TV and Australian Nurses). In this film, it is not primarily images of striking nurses and the words of striking nurses that tell the story, but the voice-over. The narrator (Patrick J. Bonello) positions the strike alongside other national and world events of 1986, ‘the year that changed the nursing profession in Australia forever’. In this film, the strike is framed as a pivotal one in the history of Australian nurses, and one that affected individual nurses deeply and transformed their profession irrevocably. There is a conscious discussion on the emotional effects of the 1986 strike – relationships broke up, people had no money, unionists could not feed their families, it was hard to keep going, families fought over the strike, picketing nurses recalled getting spat at, and there was even a death threat. [Description adapted from Milner & Brigden, 2014, pp. 116; 118]39 minute video file (.mp4 multimedia format), transferred from original videocassette. In colour, with sound. Original was released with a booklet explaining the broader context for the documentary.labor, labour history, nurses, royal australian nursing federation, strikes, industrial action, film, trade unions, 1986 victorian nurses strike, nursing, strike action, unionism, women, irene bolger, john cain, david white -

News paper Cutting Chaplain-Captain F. H. King, ? 1917
Captain Frank Herbert King was born in the Parish of St. Saviors in the borough of Brougham London March 5th 1875. He was educated in theology at St. Augustine's College Durban University. He went on to serve for 2 1/2 years in South Africa during the Boer Wars and then re-enlisted in the A.I.F.16th November 1916 when he listed his address as "The Vicarage Sunshine Victoria" and listed his wife as "Kathleen King" “Revd McCoy announced his intention of moving to the parish of Deniliquin in October 1915. He was replaced by F.H. King. Though the parish could not house him, he came in November. King was a typical “new broom”. In January 1916, at his instigation, the parish agreed to change its hymn book to Ancient and Modern. This decision could be viewed as a “churchmanship” matter, one of many that happened in these years. He pushed through the building of the vicarage, from tender in January to blessed and occupied by June. At the Annual General Meeting, King described 1915 as a trying time in the church and looked forward to a happier and more prosperous time during 1916. At a special vestry meeting, 3 November 1916, King announced that he had accepted an appointment by the Archbishop for service at the front, and that he had been instructed to prepare to go abroad. It was decided in his absence the parish use lay-readers, with periodic visits by clergy for Holy Communion. On 12 November, King thanked the parish for their loyalty and their devotion to him and the church. In return the parish presented him with a wrist watch. The parish was not formally vacant; just without a vicar. In September 1917, the Archbishop wrote advising that King had resigned. He appointed the Rev. W. Green to the parish, but Green declined.”(1) He was sent to Egypt where he administered to the Australian Stationary Hospital Australian 3rd and 5th light horse brigades. His Army record states he was Invalided and Completion of Duty 12 July 1918. He was later awarded th Order of the British Empire (OBE) 1 “The Junction” a history of St Mark’s Sunshine The picture of Chaplain-Captain F.H. King was carried in the Bible of Sig. H. C. Roussac ( a Gallipoli veteran) during his service with the A.I.F. in France. It can only be assumed that F.H.King had a profound effect on Sig.
