This is a set of 25 photograph of Print Troop Equipment in Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment at Fortuna, Bendigo, 1990. Photo .1P features the new Howson Algraphy Autoneg printing plate processor. It improved quality control and efficiency and allowed the conversion of printing plates for positive or negative use. The Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 shown in photos .2P to .4P was a computer-controlled five colour lithographic offset printing press. It provided the Royal Australian Survey Corps a vastly improved printing capability, as the five colours for a standard topographic map was printed in a single pass. The print room housing the Speedmaster printing press was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. These five photographs of map production and the car park area were taken at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1980s. The first three photographs were taken in Air Survey Squadron, where aerotriangulation and digital photogrammetric extraction of topographic features from aerial photography were undertaken. Photo .4P was taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section, located in the Attic. The technicians were probably involved in a rapid response map production, as they all were wearing field uniforms. The Army Survey Regiment’s Duty Room, RAP and Carpark appear in Photo .5P. It was probably taken from the top steps near the SGT’s accommodation block in 1986. Orthophoto mapping provided the Survey Corps with the capability to produce map products quickly in the event of a crisis. These are four photographs of equipment used by the Army Survey Regiment to produce orthophotomaps. The Wild GZ1 orthophoto projector shown in photo.1P was introduced in 1973 and was the first equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography. Height profiles were originally produced on a PEB8 Stereo profiler and later were software generated. Photos of the PEB8 are available in Victorian Collections item 6222.17P, photos .5P and .6P. In the same era the IBM 1130 computer; OMI/Nistri AP/C-3 analytical plotter with coordinatograph, OP/C orthophoto projector and Zeiss Planimat D2 stereoplotters were introduced. Orthorectification is the process of removing geometric distortions and scale errors/variations from images. Images have tilt and relief distortions that make it difficult to compare accurately a map and an image of the same geographic area. Once an image is orthorectified, features on the image are shown in their planimetric locations. The WILD OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation shown in photos .2P to.4P was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. This is a collection of seven photographs of Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) personnel posted to the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1957 to 1964. After the disbandment of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) in 1947 there was only one or two of civilian women in administrative positions at Fortuna. In February 1957 female positions from the disbanded Southern Command Field Survey Section in Melbourne were transferred to newly established positions at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Bendigo. They were accommodated at the newly acquired ‘Turriff’ mansion in Carpenter Street, Bendigo. Their first Officer Commanding (OC) was CAPT Beryl Perry from 1957 to September 1960. Her replacement as OC was CAPT Carol Castor who served in several positions up to June 1967. The main areas of employment in these early days were in administrative positions, draughting in and retouching in Lithographic Squadron. WO2 MA McLaren was the female to reach the rank of WO2 as a Cartographic Squadron section commander in June 1961. WO1 Marj Knight served at Fortuna from 1959 to 1978 was the first female to reach the rank of WO1. WO1 Knight served in the senior Squadron Sergeant-Major and Technical Warrant Officer positions of Cartographic Squadron. She was also the first female PMC of the Army Survey Regiment SGT’s Mess. The WRAAC uniform seen in this collection was replaced in 1979. This photograph of Fortuna’s Darts Team was taken in the Ballroom at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo circa 1982-1983. Darts was a very popular sport played in the Army Survey Regiment’s messes for many years. Some of Fortuna’s highly skilled exponents of formed a team to participate in in the local competition held in several pubs around Bendigo. These nine photographs of the Planeta Polygraph Printing Press were probably taken circa 1970s to 1980s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. The photos are not annotated except for .4P. The Planeta Polygraph Offset Printing Press was a two-colour offset press used to print Naval and medium format RAAF charts. The Planata Printing Press was one of the replacements for the George Mann Printing Presses. It was more reliable than the Komori Printing Press however procurement was difficult when spare parts were required. The Planeta Printing Press was built in East Germany and was in service at the Army Svy Regt from 1976 to 1994. The first four photographs were most likely taken in the 1960 and the fifth in the 1970s at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. As there are no annotations with the photos, the exact dates, locations and names of personnel are unknown. SGT Bob Scaddan appears in the fifth photo taken in the 1970s Photos .1P and .2P. could have been taken in Lithographic Squadron’s retouching room and Photos .3P, .4P and .5P. were probably taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section, located in the Attic. Retouching mainly entailed the application of liquid opaque (Plumtree), commonly known as “duff” to cover blemishes such as scratches and spots on film negatives before photographic exposure. Retouching technicians also used specialised techniques such as “needling” to repair faults on the emulsion of map reproduction material. The technician in photo .4P is needling a hydrographic feature on a drainage negative, with a zoom transfer scope projecting a scaled projected aerial photograph as a positional reference. A march past took place after the parade, with each squadron marching down the roadway past Fortuna Villa to salute the outgoing CO LTCOL Donald Ridge, as he stood on the steps at the front of the building. LTCOL Donald Ridge was the CO of Army Headquarters Survey Regiment from 1972 to 1973 and continued as the CO of the renamed Army Survey Regiment from 1974 to 1975. He handed over to LTCOL Peter Constantine AM, who commanded the unit from 1975 to 1976.
