The Mt Dandenong Post Office & Store was originally built by Will Dower. The house and shop was built in 1912 and staffed by Ruby and Ada Dower. It became the Post Office in 1917 when Lil Badenhop sold her business following the death of her daughter Myrtle. William Dower brought his family to the Dandenongs in 1898, taking up 10 acres. His property was Cambridge Gardens located between the present Mt Dandenng Tourist Road and Yarrabee Road. William and his wife Elizabeth had seven boys (Will, Harry, Bert, Walter, Joe, Edgar, Robert) and four girls (Emmy, may, Ada and Ruby). This photograph shows raspberry picking at Cambridge Gardens c1907. The Dower Homestead is visible. The boys in the floppy felt hats are from Burwood Boys Home. Ruby Dower is centre front. Photograph mounted on stiff cardboard showing a group of adults and children attending a working bee to clear a site for the Mt Dandenong State School which opened on April 23rd 1901 following the relocation of a building from Ringwood to the site. The original school operated from a rented building from 1897 that was opposite the present school site. Uniform - Mt Beauty High School
Mt Beauty High School commenced in 1953 as a Higher Elementary school as the need for a secondary college grew with the increase in population due to the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. It became the Mt Beauty High School in 1964.Historical: Education in Mt Beauty commenced relatively late so there was less of a tradition. The decision to adopt a uniform is of interest to compare it with other schools and the times.Girls winter school uniform consisting of - Blazer x4 See KVHS 0019 Dark green blazer made from pure wool flannel. It has 3 pockets - 2 lower ones on each side and on the left pocket at chest height is the cloth badge 'Mt Beauty' at the top, colored scene of mountains and river in the middle and 'High School' at the bottom.... Shirt - x2 White long sleeved blouse with collar, buttons down the front and one button on each sleeve. Tie - 124 cm long with pointy ends and with a diagonal yellow stripe 0.5 cm wide on green 2.5 cm apart. Alex McCullough (1916 - 2011) was a prolific writer, an historian, a family man and resident of Mt Beauty, an employee (foreman) of the SECV, served in the war and was on the committee of many clubs (27 at one stage) and associations including the Bright/Alpine Shire (1961-1981).Alex McCullough gives an insight into the development of Mt Beauty township and its community. Due to his heavy involvement at committee level of so many clubs and associations he has been able to document the town's history during his life time enabling the reader to see the changes at all levels and to compare life during that time with that of today.Typed pages on A4 paper held by metal fastener. It became a tourist centre from the 1960s.Examples made to increase tourism with historical photos, historical items no longer used or sought after. Photograph - Junior legatee outing, Legacy Camp Mt Evelyn 1946
A group photo of a group of Legacy girls on a camp at Mount Evelyn in May 1946. The accompanying letter says that Miss Enez Domec Carre is in the centre with Legatee Buth in front of her looking between two girls. Also in the picture is Legatee Vines and Legatee 'Grat' Gratten. The photo and letter were sent to Legacy by Val Hutchinson (nee Wigg) and the photo had been forwarded to her by the family of her good friend the late June Whitechurch. An article in the Legacy newsletter of August 1946 says that on 19th may, 90 Junior and Intermediate girls travelled by Red Cross coaches to St Mark's Holiday Camp at Mt Evelyn. The girls were divided into 4 teams distinguished by coloured sashes in Green, Gold, Red and Blue. The teams competed against each other in sports and other activities that were awarded points. A pleasant hike was arranged to Mr Beveridge's Log Cabin which was where Mr Beveridge took this photo.A record of a camp for young girls in 1946. Legacy provided opportunities for Junior Legatees to attend camps and outings for many years. Education in Mount Beauty began in the 1940s when the SECV constructed the town of Mount Beauty for their workers and staff. The educational facilities included a kindergarten, a primary / consolidated school and a secondary college. Mount Beauty education was highly valued by the residents of Mt Beauty and families in the Kiewa Valley. In the 1940s and 1950s it was very modern with new buildings and included the latest in teaching aids and technology.
