Wesley PEMBERTHY (1920- ) Born Broken Hill, New South Wales Wesley Pemberthy spent his childhood in Adelaide, South Australia. As an adult he lived in Bendigo, Ballarat, Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford and Perth. While in Perth he studied at Perth Technical School (1933-1937), followed by studies under the tutorship of Norman Lindsay in New South Wales (1938-1941). After service during World War Two Wes Pemberthy became the first Rehabilitation student at the National Gallery School, Victoria, undertaking research into the techniques of the Old Masters. He was the winner of the Sulman Award in 1955. Dale HICKEY (31 July 1937 - ) Born Melbourne Dale Hickey studied art at Swinburne College of Technology before teaching at Phillip Institute of Technology (now Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) from 1973–89. Leaving that position he devoted himself full-time to painting. In 1968 he was included in the National Gallery of Victoria exhibition of Australian minimalism, 'The Field'. His work is known for an awareness of minamalism, colour field and realism. In 1986 Dale Hickey won the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery's Hugh Williamson Art Prize. In 1988 the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery mounted a large retrospective exhibition of his work which was then toured. His work is widely represented in Australian public collections. This painting was inspired by an original painting by Wilhelm Melby held at the National Gallery of Victoria. Melby is a Danish artist (1824-1882). It depicts a famous Devonshire coastal region famous now for its lighthouse and the pick up point for the pilot when entering waters approaching Dartmouth. The sailing vessels pre-date the construction of the famous lighthouse. Over the centuries the view would have been familiar to many sailors as they left or approached the English mainland and south coast ports in the English Channel. Madeline Mary Ravenna Lewellin (1854 – 24 November 1944) was born in Victoria to Dr John Henry Hill Lewellin, a physician, and Grace Elizabeth (née Danneby). She was one of five daughters, and the family lived in Prahran. Lewellin's brother, Captain Herbert Gordon Hill Lewellin, was a commander in the P. and O. fleet (apprentice on the Romanoff, Lieutenant RNR on the HMS Arethusa in 1899, RMS Mongolia in 1913 sunk in 1917, Naldera in 1920). She studied painting at the National Gallery School in 1879 under Eugene von Guerard. She's also known for collecting and painting specimens, and became a member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria in 1885. In 1884 she won a silver medal for her studies of fungi. She collected plants for Australian botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, and the variety of Dicrastylis lewellinii (Purple sand-sage) is named after her. Irish poet and balladeer Thomas Moore, best-known for penning The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer, is honored in this statue prominently located in Sturt Street created by sculptor George Grant from white Carrara marble. George Grant was trained at the School of Art associated with the National Gallery of Victoria, apparently in the 1880s, and then worked as an artist, specialist house painter, and banner artist. Several of his paintings are held by the Ballarat Art Gallery. Moore`s writings range from lyric to satire, from prose romance to history and biography. His popular "Irish Melodies" appeared in ten parts between 1807 and 1835. Moore was a good musician and skillful writer of songs, which he set to Irish tunes, mainly of the 18th century. Colin COLAHAN (1897-1987) Born Australia Colin Colahan was a student of Max Meldrum, and was one of the first tonalist painters to have his work purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria. He contributed cartoons to 'The Bulletin'. Colahan was working in Paris in the 1920s and had a studio in Mont Martre. He returned to Melbourne by 1927. He next lived and worked in London in 1936 for the next 22 years. During World War Two his house in Chelsea was bombed and everything destroyed. Some photographs donated to Xavier College, his alma mater, are the only evidence of the destroyed work. Cola ham was an Australian War Artist after 1942, with over 90 of his works held by the Australian War Memorial. He moved permanently to Itsly in 1958. Ponsonby May CAREW SMYTH Ponsonby May Carew Smyth was born at Cork, Ireland, Carew-Smyth studied at the Belfast School of Art and Design. Carew Smyth taught at the National Art Training School, London and Rugby School. He arrived in Australia in January 1891 , and was appointed Principal of the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery School (Ballarat West Technical Art School) from 1891 to 1899. In 1907 Carew Smyth was Chief Inspector of Art for the Victorian Education Department. He designed commemorative wall plaques for state schools after World War One. Robert JACKS (1943-2014) Jacks studied sculpture at Prahran Technical College from 1958–1960 and painting at RMIT in 1961–62. His first solo exhibition was held to great acclaim in 1966 and in 1968 his work was included in the landmark exhibition, The Field, at the National Gallery of Victoria. Beginning in 1968, Jacks spent ten years living and working in Canada and the United States. It was during this period that his unique visual language matured, incorporating influences from the major exponents of contemporary abstraction, minimalism and conceptual practice. A series of photos of Pugh at work. Clifton Pugh (1924-1990) was born at Richmond Victoria, and educated at various schools including Briar Hill Primary, Eltham Higher Elementary School and Ivanhoe Grammar. He studied art at the National Gallery School of Victoria 1948-52. Pugh is recognised as a one of Australia’s foremost painters. He is represented in major galleries throughout the country and overseas. He founded the “Dunmoochin” artists colony at Cottles Bridge. This front image from "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall, page 128 shows Pugh working on his portrait of Dame Mabel Balcombe Brookes (1890-1975).. Accoridng to an entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography for Dame Brookes, this Pugh portrait remains in the family. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). He became a central figure in the area's arts community of writers, artists, sculptors, film makers, actors and musicians. He contracted polio when he was young is considered one of Australia's most successful and loved authors. His most famous book, 'I Can Jump Puddles' is based on his life story and the obstacles he faced as a child in trying to overcome his disability. Marshall White is a former Merri-bek resident and artist. He completed a Fine Art diploma at the National Gallery Art School in 1973. After a severe motorcycle accident left him with quadriplegia in 1977, he returned to university, earning a Master in Painting from what is now the Victorian College of the Arts. White is considered a pioneer of digital art in Victoria. He taught art to inmates at Pentridge Prison, which provided him with access to early computers. Using a Commodore Amiga, Marshall pushed the boundaries of digital art. Strip 1 represents an early contribution to what was, at the time, an emergent art form. Jeff WOODGER Born Bendigo, Victoria Jeff studied art at La Trobe University in 1986, and a Graduate Diploma in teaching in 1989. He worked as a teacher from 1990 to 1998. In 1994 Jeff was awarded a Master of Arts from La Trobe University. He then studied at the prestigious Slade School, London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Jeff Woodger completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Fine Art) at University of Ballarat (now Federation University) in 2006. This work was part of the exhibition assessment for this study. Jeff Woodger has lived and worked in Japan regularly since 1994. Famous French artist Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, 1796-1875, was trained in the classical landscape style. His inspiration came from his travels around France and Italy. He developed a soft poetic or romantic style of work which became very popular. He had the skills to bring'light' into his paintings. The original oil on canvas painting by Corot is held at The National Gallery in the United Kingdom. It is titled 'Souvenir of a Journey to Coubron' and is one of twenty-seven of his works at the Gallery. Corot visited Coubon, east of Paris, many times. In 1873 during his stay there he sketched the scene that became the basis of this painting. This reproduction print was made by The Medici Society Ltd., founded in England 1908. The Society's aim was to make artwork affordable and available to the general public. The name Medici was chosen to honour the support and encouragement given to artists in the 15th century by Lorenzo de' Medici (1449 - 1492), known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, and his family. His profile is on the company's trademark. The Medici Society still produces Fine Art reproduction prints as well as selling original works. The print was framed by Westminster Art Gallery in Camperdown, London. The handwritten text on the back of the artwork adds some background to the artist: Corot was apprenticed to a Draper but changed to his profession at the age of 22 years. When he went from a poor artist to achieving wealth and fame he generously supported his less fortunate fellow artists. Corot found that the light and shade in a natural scene meant more to a landscape painter that what could be learned by following the principles of the academies. Corot was 51 years old before he sold his first picture. He though that he was the only artist that could really paint 'light'. The National Gallery, Victoria, has an original oil on canvas by Corot "the bent tree", created 1856-1860. It is in a similar style to this print "Souvenir of a Journey to Coubron", which was likely to have been painted around the same time.This high quality reproduction print was produced in the early-to-mid 1900;'s. This advancement in technology allowed everyday people to own and enjoy the fine art that was previously only accessible to the wealthy.
